Here's a thought.... Since Disney does not post the carb count in their food... Why don't we start a thread right here posting what we each find? Had this been done already? I figure within a short amount of time we could have 1 place (here) where we can find the info?!

An easy way of doing it would be to create a document or spreadsheet on something like google drive so any one can edit it with whatever info they have.

the thing is, most of the food you're going to encounter is standard restaurant type food. You can easily find equivalents by using an app (figwee, fat secret, calorie king) or by the Calorie King book. Packaged items will have carb counts available. Things like pasta are always the same carb counts. Hamburger or hot dog rolls are always the same.

But, also, a lot of the carb counting comes from deciding the serving size of foods, so it's difficult to make a list and have it be accurate for everyone. And carb counting can also be a bit personal. Some people deliberately count heavy, some light. Some account for protein and fat and some subtract for fiber. There's really no good way to do it for everyone, with restaurant food.

I know it seems like an overwhelming issue for you right now, but it is something that you'll figure out quite easily.

This list is a bit outdated, but it's a start if you need to start somewhere. But that's the thing, it seems like it would be a good idea but pretty quickly everyone realizes it's easy to just figure out on your own. :)

It is frustrating to be at Disney and have to guesstimate all the carb counts when they are available at so many non-Disney restaurants these days. :confused3 I always make it a point to bring this up when giving any feedback about dining at Disney. Maybe one day they will change their policy.

One positive note is that they will give carb counts for the food at the Be Our Guest restaurant at MK - at least they did when we were there in Oct. 2013.

We make a little note card for each restaurant we plan to visit with our best guess carb counts for the menu items my DD9 is likely to order. It helps us to be a little less stressed when figuring out insulin dosages at meal time. In addition we take a small scale and sometimes measuring cups to help with carb calculating.

Here's the info I have from my Be Our Guest card. We copied most of the carb info off the nutrition info page at the ordering kiosk for kids meals at lunch. We did ask our waiter to get us the carb counts for a couple of the cupcakes, and he was able to do so.... Hope this helps a little!

Finger Salad 5
Mahi Mahi meal 34
Pork meal 34
Strawberry cupcake 45 ---- oh so good!
Lemon cupcake 59

thank you!! I'll for sure check that out!!! Sorry I imagine all of us new to diabetes are driving you crazy!!! I've found using the search tool, I'm finding tons of info on here already about Disney & type 1. Thank you!!!

Ok..I have been a T1 for over 20 years. Been on a pump for 10 years.

I am fairly good at estimating carbs, however on the past (non-Disney) cruise I was on, my estimates were way off.

Downloading apps won't work, as I won't have access to my phone service.
I know I can bring a "book" however, that is not ideal.

Has anyone had success with getting information from Disney aboard the ships?

We were on a cruise in Dec with my YDS who is T1D. I never even asked. I carried my scale and Calorie King book with me to every meal. Yes it was a pain in the butt but we had pretty good numbers. More lows than highs from all the activity and excitement.

For a PP who asked about a Churro. Calorie King has a section on "carnival foods" not perfect but probably a good estimate.

a cinnamon sugar from Tel Daco is 23g

No luck on the Disney cruise. We just used the Calorie King Book. I once asked for carbs on the concentrate they use to make smoothies and the asst. server really had no idea what I was talking about. I ended up just WAGing most of our meals. However, by the end of the cruise, we pretty much had the carb counts down.

My 9 year old was diagnosed with type 1 right after our last trip to WDW 3 years ago. Going back and looking at our vacation pictures from that year, I can actually see the signs that I totally wasn't aware of at the time. He had already started loosing weight, and his cheeks were flushed and eyes glassy in all the pictures. :sad1:

We are planning our first WDW trip since his diagnoses. We will be going September of this year. DS just got on an insulin pump last week, so we should have 6 months to get it all figured out before our trip. I'm worried about figuring out the carb count for all his food while we are there though. I'm a little bit of a control freak when it comes to his diabetes, so the idea of just guessing at carb counts is giving me panicky feelings! :rolleyes1:rotfl2:

from one control freak to another - you can get a small portable travel scale, they do make collapsible measuring cups, and there are lots of good apps. ;)

But..only you can decide how much you want to worry when you're on vacation. I don't even log while we're on vacation, and the first time I did that, it was HARD! LOL. (and almost 9 years into diabetes I'm still anal about paper logs)

Search the threads here for type 1. I found all my answers by doing that. When everyone says take extra supplies.... They mean it! I thought having an extra meter was not needed?! As soon as we got to our airport hotel in the way out .... Batteries died!!! No store in site! It was awful! My son ran high even with all the walking. I carried a small notebook to keep track of carb counts & his meals & such. That way I already knew what to dose him because he usually eats the same things. Test a lot. Also we were in the dining plan so I thought I would not need snacks. Because you get so much food. We needed snacks!

Love this scale. It folds up, so it's easy to take with you if you so desire. It has a database of nutritional info. You can weigh say a baked potato and type in "potato, baked" and it will give you all the nutritional info - including carb count.

That said, after 8.5 years of dealing with T1, we have enough extra stuff to carry through the parks. We just wing it and check often. ;)

And take more supplies than you ever expect to need - Extra batteries, meter, lancer, enough pump supplies for at least one a day...at least. Also check with your pump company about a vacation loaner. We never had to use it but felt better knowing a replacement was in the room safe if anything happened.
We found that it helped to change out the cartridge in her pump every night. Between the heat and the bubbles created by the extra movement, it really helped.

Im curious about this scale....when you weight the potato does it know how many carbs per ounce etc so you know the carb count is exact?

It weighs everything in grams and then maintains a nutritional data base based on the fact that every potato /banana/apple etc has the same percentage of carb. For instance, every banana is about 21% carbohydrate. So if you weigh that banana in grams and multiply by .21, you get a precise carb count for that particular item. Every baked good, like bread is always close to 50% carb, so ifyou had an item that weighed 100g it would have exactly 50g of carbs. Make sense??

You can obviously do this without a nutritional scale but having the built in database makes it easy. I just do it manually with a calculator and scale at home. If you google "carb factors" you'll probably pull up a lot of info.
