In line Boredom Busters-unplugged!

I know I can hand my kids phones to play on while waiting in line, and I do that, but I also remember taking my older DS before cell phones. So what are your ideas for keeping kids (and adults) entertained and unplugged while waiting in line.

A few I remember are:

A-Z game. In my disney bag I packed A-autographbook, B-breakfast bar, C-crayons, etc
States and capitals this was also a great way to meet and interact with other guests, especially if you can't remember their state's capital.
Hidden Mickeys always good
who can stand on one foot the longest this game has gone on and on, especial good if feet are tired,
trivia questions- you either need to know the trivia or you can used a phone, which makes at least on person plugged in but it is still interactive

what others can you think of?

The one and only thing that works for my kids is food. They couldn't last three minutes in a queue without something to stuff their faces with.

Some things that we have done:

* Drawing or coloring books (also used the paper to play hang man)
* Puzzle books (crossword, word circle, sudoko, etc)
* Eye Spy (include variations in which you are looking for something and the first person to spot it wins, like red sneakers or a purple hat)

We always take string for string games and a mini set of barrel full of monkeys.

Two things; coloring books and crayons.

Seriously- best idea ever. I have a new one planned for February as I wait for Anna and Elsa.

We play Simon Says and almost always end up including kids around us.

Another game is "I Love My Love" and you can do a Disney version.... Going through the alphabet you say "I love my love with an A because she is so awesome, her name is Ariel and we went to Adventureland to buy some Apples.

We also do Disney 20 questions.

I wish I remembered more of the hand-clapping games we used to do as kids. I think my eldest daughter has the coordination and patience to learn these now!

We also did rock,paper,scissors for who gets to choose the next ride.

Thumb Wars were also popular with my two.

Everyone else has touched on other things - coloring book, crayons, small toy that we usually bought at Disney, Eye spy.

I yo-yo in line, but that could be dangerous for kids in a crowded place.

I've brought reading books with me into the parks to read in line. I also jotted down notes in line to help me with my TRs (if you are into that sort of thing). I've also played the game where you try and keep a conversation going using ONLY song lyrics. That was really fun!

Not all lines are 20 and 30 minutes I'm willing to wait in 70+ minute line and do so often. I like to take in the scenery around me while waiting, and I don't mind chatting with the members of my party, but it gets boring sometimes.

Not always, but obviously, by the replies, some do.

BTW, one of my favorite lines to my kids is to think the thoughts in your head that's where great ideas come from, then I list the some great innovators, and Walt is always on the list.

But these "games" are also important. The boost creativity, socialization skills and problem solving--- all while having fun. Maybe you should consider trying some the next time you're chatting.

Haven't done this yet since my only child is grown and gone with his own family and they have their ideas of what to do in a Disney line but....

Pipe cleaners. You can twist them into whatever shape or you can have a "sword fight" with them (being careful of people in front and behind you).

On our last trip, my grandson deemed me "ride buddy" so every time we went onto a bus or into an attraction queue, he made sure I was with him. I hadn't talked to a five year old in quite a long time but he made it very simple. He liked the color green and I liked the color orange and that's how we spent our time together - finding everything in line with those colors. I still remember his eyes lighting up with "Grandma! He's got green AND orange on his shirt!"

We have a bunch of mini books, and I always have a couple in my purse, even at home. They're little paperback books that are 3.5 inches square. Most of the ones we have are by Robert Munsch, like the one below:

For long lines, a portable tripod camping chair or two that we rotate around the group so everyone gets a chance to take a load off their feet (think Christmas week crowds). Nothing calms an antsy child or adult down like taking a load off their feet for a minute.

People watching is also a ton of fun in line. As teenagers, my brother would have us rate the hotness factor of people in line. Call it what you will. It entertained us, even if it was very high school.

DH is the king of goofball games. His hand turns into a spider that jumps around and lands on our son, and he has to splat it. Monster games. Tickles... if you don't want to hear squeals of laughter, stay away from us in line. We definitely don't act like lemmings. At least we don't chant...

We got DS one of those light up bubble gun things from a gift shop. It was a hit. the refill bottles are 99cents so we bought the gun and a bunch of bottles of bubbles.

that thing kept him busy in all the lines. He loved blowing bubbles and it also kept the kids around us busy because they enjoyed popping the bubbles.

Also a pez dispenser with refills

a mini magna doodle from target

a coloring book and some crayons

We actually hardly used our phone for DS's line entertainment.
