Difference between moderate and deluxe?

I have never stayed in a deluxe before. We have stayed at POR the past 2 times and we are happy. Besides possibly being on the monorail, what are the main differences between moderate and deluxe? Oh and I know the standard room size is bigger in deluxe as well.

Good question. I don't think I would ever shell out the money to find out!!!! I do know that they have nicer places to eat and cool pools from what I've read. I'm happy at a moderate. There are only 3 deluxe resorts I would stay at if I had the money. Wilderness lodge, yacht club and poly. I would have to have a HUGE discount though.

One of the biggest differences is the proximity to a theme park. The monorail resorts are a monorail ride away from MK. The Epcot area resorts are all within walking distance of Epcot and (possibly) DHS. AKL is the closest resort to AK. WL is probably the lone exception, but it's an easy boat ride to the MK.

Other differences...there are usually interior corridors and walkways for the Deluxe resort (i.e., room doors open to an interior coordinator).

There are usually two different table service choices at the Deluxe. One that is a Signature and one that is a non-Signature, in addition to the CS option(s).

I'm less sure about this one, but I think the pools at the Deluxes tend to be a bit more detailed/themed. I'm thinking about Stormalong Bay at BC/YC and the pool at AKL.

Some of the differences are:

- interior hallways
- all rooms and CS is in the main building (with the exception of the Poly and GF where the rooms/CS are in outer buildings)
- signature restaurants
- they accommodate 5 people (with the exception of WL and AKL)
- location
- alternate transportation options (although POR does have the boat to DTD)

deluxe differences from moderates:

...Price is MUCH higher
...Room size is larger
...interior corridors
...balconies at most resorts/rooms
...more room service than pizza
...Location near a theme park for convenient/quicker access (to at least 1 park)
...usually alternative transportation options (not buses) to at least 1 park (except AKL); often a boat or monorail or both
...in most cases there is easy access to other resorts e.g. monorail resorts or Epcot resorts (again except AKL)
...signature table service restaurants
...more amenities eg spa services, fitness centre, access to specialty cruises for fireworks viewing, CL availability
...attached DVC property (except YC and POLY, for now)

Couple other simple things that was not said. More comfy beds, nicer towels an wash rags. And my favorite is the room views at most of the Deluxe. May favorite part is kicking back on balcony or laying back in bed with blinds open watching the fire works with my kiddo. Probably one of the most special things as we love fireworks and we dont have to be in the crowds to watch them as we are already showered an ready for bed by then. We absolutely love the comtempary for that reason.
We have not stayed at mods. but done value a few times to. Values are more "playful"? feeling I guess I said that right. More color and lots of picture spots. we have fun at them also.

We loved the turndown service and chocolate on the pillows at WL not to mention the Native American Quote card left by the chocolate.

Yes, this. By "renting" DVC points, you can stay in a Deluxe Resort's Studio Villa for about the same price as a Moderate resort room, or (maybe even less, depending on the time of year and which location you're considering).

I've never stayed at a moderate (rented points!), but one of the drawbacks I often hear is that they're so large. You frequently have to walk a long way or take an internal bus just to get to the actual park bus stops. Also, the park buses tend do be much more crowded, meaning that you may have to wait a while to even catch a park bus.

I think the best way to find out is to actually STEP INSIDE. The easiest ones to visit would be the 3 on the Monorail. There is nothing stopping you from walking around. All the deluxes are impressive in their own right. My FAV is AKL. I felt like I was on a vacation within a vacation, it is so unique.

I agree with all the previous posts. I will add that there is just an overall feel that the deluxe resorts are more themed, more attention to detail, more high end finishes, towels, products, etc. The pools are more creative (Stormalong Bay is pretty much a water park in itself! and really, a volcano??) and tend to have a view of a lake/boardwalk. Someone suggested visiting a few. You can walk from the EP back entrance to YC/BC and BWI within a few minutes. They are gorgeous. I remember my stay at BWI, we had a first floor room and our glass doors opened up to a courtyard where it was a small walk to a hot tub.

That said, if you can afford it, go deluxe. If you don't spend any time at the resort because you are at the parks without breaks, are not "pool people" or tend not to eat at your resort or at TS, it may not be worth the cost.

The most noticeable differences from POR to deluxe are going to be size (deluxe are more easily walkable), interior hallways, and quicker transportation.

Maybe a tiny bit OT, but I noticed a lot of people mentioning the additional cost. I'm really excited to stay at our first Deluxe resort in December. I didn't think we'd ever be able to afford a Deluxe either, but with the fall discount, a pool view bunk bed room at AKL is actually less expensive than a family suite at AoA, and only about $80 a night more than a preferred room at POR!
