The Official 2013 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Thread

Anyone ever have pain in their calves likely from running? I started noticing a light pain on Sunday. Growing in intensity on Monday. I did run thinking they just needed a good stretching, but the pain almost went into the bottom of the feet,

I was going to do a slow 4-5 today, but nixed that plan for rest instead. :(.

Coach, what are your thoughts?
I could tell you what my running week was like last week if that helps.

Walk for about 10 minutes and stretch. Do not bounce in the stretch or go to a point of pain. If you do not have a foam roller or something like "The Stick" get one and roll your calves. A kitchen rolling pin will work in a pinch. You want to roll down the mid calf, stopping at any point that hurts and work there until the muscle relaxes. After the mid calf work the inner and outer calf muscle. Note, stop rolling at the point where the achilles tendon attaches to the muscle.

I would not run with the pain as described i.e. rolling from the calf and then through the bottom of the foot. The following does not substitute for a hands on medical opinion,,, It sounds more like Achilles tendonitis or possible slight tear. If icing, NSAIDs and rest does not heal it up this week, get to a doctor.

The stretching and rolling will help loosen up the muscle as well. This combined with the ice and rest may help get past the issue.

This is my first Disney race and I can't wait! Not nearly as prepared as I would like to be but still looking forward to it.

For anyone who has done this race in the past - do people usually wear their headphones or is music provided throughout the course?

Thanks so much for the help!

:welcome: You'll be just fine. You're there to have fun!:cheer2::rotfl:

There are a few spots with music but I never run without mine (unless the battery goes dead.) :scared1: I do keep the volume just high enough that I can't hear my feet hitting the pacement but low enough to hear announcements (not that I remember any) or if someone is coming up to pass me.

The theory is that cool applied to the legs will stop the small micro bleeds and reduce post run inflammation.

Studies show that there is little difference between cool water and icing. With that in mind, a cool bath would have similar therapeutic benefits as an ice bath.

Additional studies how that neither really are all that effective and that one should simply have a recovery drink and do a proper warm down post run. That would include a 15-20 minute walk post half marathon and a 30-40 minute walk post marathon.

Personally, I subscribe to the latter. I will have a recovery drink, walk and stretch out well post run. I developed my personal practices during a biking event where we rode 100+ mile days for 8 straight days. It taught a lot about recovery and how to refuel between long and hard days. I reserve ice for injured joints, use heat for muscle injury and just push through muscle soreness..

Thank you once again Oh Knowledgeable One of All Things Running. :lmao: Here's another one that I think is particularly relevant for the W&D - how long do you wait to :drinking1 after running and does it make any difference in recovery times?

Ok I'm crazy but I am definitely running the Houston half Sunday as my last long run. The goal is to run at long slow run pace and not race pace. I'm going to start at the back and take my time. I am not going to get caught up in racing.

Best of luck Peach! :thumbsup2 Be careful! :woohoo:

I can't believe how close it's getting !!! I've been pretty lazy with my training lately. I ran a great 15k at the beginning of Oct but have really tapered off since then. I think it's a combo of a lot of travel and some pain I've been having in my foot.

I got some new running shoes thinking it might help but so far I'm not a fan. My old shoes are mizuno inspire (I think) and my new ones are brooks adrenaline. I've only rsn in them twice so not giving up on them yet.

Kind of a random question but had anyone ever seen Mickey/Minnie compression socks?

Less than 3 weeks to go! I have a transportation question. DH and I are staying at Caribbean Beach for the half. We are planning to take it easy Saturday with a late breakfast at Boma and then head to the expo to pick up our packets. We were planning to take a bus to AK and then to AKL for breakfast. What is the easiest way to get to the expo from AKL? Other than a taxi? We were thinking take bus lot MK and hen monorail to Poly then bust to expo? Is there a shorter route?

Thanks,
Tonya

Ok.... I have 5 items left on my pre-trip checklist (other than actually finish training). I have to print my waiver, book our rental car, print my proof of time, and pack, and Figure Out What To Wear for the race!!!! :scared1: I know I know... nothing like procrastination. I am not planning a full-on costume. I basically just want to be comfortable and possibly not look too terrible for pics. I really want to wear one of my running skirts because all of my tops fit better with them, but I've never run more than 5 miles in them and I'm not too certain I feel like wearing a skirt for my long run on sunday when it's supposed to be 40-something degrees. So I guess it's just down to color choices.... Was thinking either blue shorts, pink tank (just for fun bold colors), or blue shorts and a yellow tank, along with my Run for Boston bracelet, since the last time I actually ran at disney was the day after the Boston marathon.

So share your race night outfits and costumes (if you have one).

Anyone else having trouble with track shack? It won't load for me to print my waiver. Additionally I'm starting to panic because I can't find my registration confirmation of invoice from get travel. Ahhhhh!

As fun as it would be to wear a costume, I'm just too sensory oriented when I run to wear one. If it pulled or pinched or scratched in any way, I couldn't do it.

I bought a deep grape purple tech shirt and will wear it with black running capris. I'll bling out with a loud Bondi Band, though. Either gold sparkly or some other loud pattern TBD!

This is NOT the time for me to lose my motivation:scared1:. Ugh...the weather got crappy, I've been getting way to much work at work (like never getting out on time!) and I cannot get rid of this stupid nasal congestion/drainage:headache:. All of that has combined to give me zero motivation to go out and run. I haven't run in a week and last week's run was only 3.5 miles:sad2:. I can run today and Thursday this week. I was worried about doing a long run (7-10 miles) today because I haven't gone that distance in over 2 weeks. OTOH, if I did a short run today, then I will be forced to do a longer one on Thursday, regardless of the weather or the family plans (kids have no school and DH and I are both off:yay:).

I got motivated today and decided to run for about an hour and see how I felt. I started out a little later than I'd planned so I was looking at being able to go an hour and a half, at most. I focused hard on thinking "keep it slow and steady" because I did not want to overdo it too fast. It's only 45 degrees out with a bit of a breeze so I didn't want to stress my freezing cold muscles. I did one of my regular routes and I found that I was neither in pain/discomfort or out of breath at any time. I did a totally new interval today...walk 4/run 10...and I really liked it. I wasn't too fond of the HUGE uphill climb (I believe it is 150' over a 1/2 mile:scared1:) that I hit about 3 minutes into the 10-minute run interval, but other than that, I found it rather easy and relaxing.

At the 1 hour mark, I had a choice of heading home or doing a different loop which would have been another 3-3.5 miles. Since I was feeling pretty good, I didn't want to ruin it so I decided to call it good. I finished 5.03 miles in 1:02.38 for a 12:27 pace:dance3:. I hit my target time and my target pace so I am happy. I am not sore or tired so all is good. I am not sure if I want to try for 8-10 on Thursday. I *really* think I need to get in at least one more run (if not 2) that are in the 9-12 mile range. I have only done 12 three times (and felt pretty crappy after all of them), but I know that I will be able to finish the 13.1.

I think that is why my motivation is starting to dry up a bit. When I started training, the concept of being able to complete 13.1 miles seemed completely crazy. My goal all along has been to build up my endurance and keep a pace at or below 13:00/mile. I have succeeded in going 12 miles at a 12:30 pace so I am 100% sure that I will be able to complete the race ahead of the sweepers. Because of that, I am starting to lose motivation to keep running. I already know I can do it at my target goal. It's too late in the game to change that goal now. I don't want to set a time goal because I don't want any disappointment. I want to feel like I have achieved something when I cross that finish line and not have any feelings of falling short of a goal. The goal is to finish...that's it!

Time to get cracking on the packing. Only 16 days until we leave:cheer2:.

I have NO IDEA what I'm going to wear. :confused3 I'm not a costume-y person, so it's wide open. And since it will be dark, I can wear pretty much anything. Probably shorts, a tank, and compression socks.

DH and I bought designs on line and made our shirts. My only issue is if it rains I may need to go with something else. The shirt is very thin material. (sorry its so big)

I think it depends on the value you place on your time. No matter how one slices it, you are in for a minimum of three hops to get to the expo from the AKL. From the AKL - it's bus to a park - Transport to a host resort - Expo Bus to WWoS. If you are incredibly lucky, the best you can hope for is an hour commute. In 10 minutes and for less than $15, ($9.07 by Mears Estimator) you could be there via taxi.

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
OMG, there is no smiley that shows how much I laughed at the rum shirt! LOVE it. I want it. :thumbsup2

I'm going to be looking for you the whole race. This is my favorite part of last year's wine & dine, noticing random people's shirts. That was totally unexpected to me, never having done a race before, nor one in Disney, or one that has Wine as the theme. Fun times!

LOL! That is fitting for DH. ;) Definitely say Hi! :thumbsup2

No costume for me. Since I have never run in a race before I thought i'd keep it simple. I bought a "W.i.s.H " green t-shirt. The front says " pix13dust" and "W.I.S.H". The back says " Slow is the new fast!"
I'm wearing it with black running capri's that have a purple stripe.
Stop over and say Hi if you see me :)

i would show my outfit if i could figure out how to post phone pics to this website.

I have red top, minnie mouse team sparkle skirt and will be wearing my hair in two buns to look like ears

my dh is doing "essence of mickey" (black top, red shorts) I was trying to customize his nike running cap with ears, but it didn't work out.

Training wise, I have lost motivation. last week I ran a total of 5 miles. Yesterday I went 4.5, and this weekend is supposed to be the 14. Since DH is still recovering I think we will try to do 6-9. I would like to do another 4.5 between now and then, but with is so dark and so cold it is hard for me to want to go out when I get home from work.

keep up all the good runs you guys!

I have the Minnie sparkle skirt too! That 'a about as far as I've gotten though. I like the bun idea!

I checked out the bindi band Minnie socks but $50 is a little to much for to spend on socks.

I had to post this...these are my quotes from another message board, talking about running and training. At the time, I had never planned on the 1/2 marathon. I was shooting for a 5K.

...I was going to do a 5-minute warm up walk and then try and run 22 minutes without stopping. Well, I ended up doing just that! I was a little bummed when I got home and mapped it out...my "long run" was only 1.87 miles. The reason I am so bummed is because I stopped running when I reached the end of the bike trail that I was running. I could've kept going that extra .13 if I would have known I was THAT close to finishing 2 miles.
... All total, I went 3.36 miles in 41:37 (12:21 pace).

So while I was bummed that I was so close to running 2 miles straight, I am totally psyched with my overall time and distance AND the fact that 1.87 is BY FAR the longest I have ever run! Up until now, I have only been able to go one mile without stopping....and I only did that ONCE!

This was posted on November 8, 2012...almost 1 year ago. It's amazing how far I have come in just one year. I went from near tears after 1 mile, to being able to run 6 miles non-stop.

My goal for next year is to be able to run 10 miles without walking. I don't care what pace I do it in, I just want to be able to do it.

On a totally unrelated note...

MY DOGS BROKE MY GARMIN:scared1::headache::eek:! I'd set it on the bed with my running outfit while I brushed my teeth. Apparently, in that short time, the two pooches (one is 55 pounds, the other is 100 pounds) managed to jump on the bed. The glass case has a puncture in it and it is completely cracked. Fortunately, it still works, but it certainly isn't weather resistant and there is no way I can use it for the race since the glass is soon to fall out completely. What a bummer:sad2:. The DH said I can buy a new one, but they are now $130. It was $110 last year when I got it for my birthday...dang inflation!

Anyone get into the special night time meet-up that RunDisney is doing? As usual, you had to apply within nano-seconds of getting the tweet from Disney--it's first come, first served, no limit on how many times you've done it before.
