What do you do when the kids are in bed at the resort?

Okay, let's try to keep this thread clean please!! ;)

We don't have a suite so our kids will be sleeping in the bed beside us. What do you do on the nights where they head to bed at a reasonable time (i.e. 8 or 9pm)? My DH and I aren't going to want to go to sleep at that time. I am sure we'll head to sleep around 11pm.

My DH would prefer to watch TV or a movie to relax before bed. Are there movies on the TVs in the room? Pay per view? We were considering bringing our laptop and some DVDs but I don't want to lug it on the plane and have to worry about it at all.

Thoughts?

No pay per view. When the kids were little would just watch tv. And that wouldn't even stay on long as a trip to WDW is so tiring the adults would fall asleep soon after the kids did. But we were rarely in bed by 8 or 9. That is prime fireworks viewing time! We never adhered to strict bedtime schedules while at Disney World.

If we are keeping it clean...we will watch some tv, although the cable at disney is HORRIBLE. You ideas to bring DVDs is a good one. Have a snack on the balcony. Plan for the next day. Fireworks viewing if we can see them
From the balcony. I'll sometimes take a little walk, grab a drink in my mug and do a bit of quiet shopping.

We plan to sit on our balcony and relax . We will bring our iPad as well as home paper books to read. I also was thinking of bringing a chess and scrabble boards. DH might bring some work. One of us might run out and pick up Some cookies and hot chocolate, or a little wine and cheese. We are expecting to use that balcony often and for hours!!

When the kids were little they would be so worn out from all the excitement that they would sleep like a rock and we could watch all the TV we wanted to without waking them. When the kids got a little older we would all stay out at the parks until 10 pm or so, and then everyone would go to bed at the same time. We were tired, too. When the kids got to be older teens they would stay out and DH and I would go to bed first. ;)

My kids are high school and college age now but I can remember. We learned quickly not to ignore the bed time or we suffered the next day : (

We'd put them to bed, turn off lights and tv, they'd fall asleep quickly. And, slept like rocks the entire night. After they were out, we'd turn a lamp and tv on and go about our business; they didn't move. I don't remember the balcony being an option back then, value or moderate for us at the time. And no iPads; maybe a laptop but we'd have to pay the internet fee.

One of us might go to the food court or something. As my kids got older but still had a bedtime and were early risers NO MATTER WHAT; DH & I would take a short walk around the resort while they were falling asleep.

Wow. How on earth do you get your kids to go to sleep so early? Lol. We don't stick with bedtimes either, but we do try to be back at a decent hour most nights. Then we usually spend one night out late for the fireworks. :)

Not sure how old your kids are but when we brought our kids to Disney for the first time, they were 3 and 5, and we had all these plans of mid day naps, and early bed times.....once we got there all of those plans went out the window! :rotfl2: those kids were in the parks until 1 am!!! But we sleep late in the a.m.

Our kiddos were super commando, even at a young age and on that first (and second) trip with the kids we absolutely wore ourselves out trying to keep up with them!. They are kind of night owls though. Even last night they were up until midnight watching the Red Sox game with us. They didn't wake up until about 1/2 hour ago though.

By the 3rd trip with them, we had moved on to deluxe resorts with CL and that made a HUGE difference because it caused us to slow down and start enjoying resort time as well.

Our last family trip was in April and we have very much added in a lot of resort time to our trips. Funny though, they are 9 and 6 now and the mid day naps were taken by DH and I while they watched TV.

When they are out late though, they tend to pass out as soon as we hit the room. Every family is different and you might find that it doesn't go as you planned. :goodvibes

Not sure about the "lugging it on the plane" part. I'm thinking you would have four people so only one would be "lugging" and there are computer bags with ample room for reading material for that person. DVDs could be spread out over the four (I'm assuming) carry on bags.

There shouldn't be any worry at all. People fly with laptops all the time. If concerned while in the hotel room, get a lock for the laptop case.

When we're at WDW, our kids are asleep the second they hit the pillow! DH and I could probably vacuum in the hotel room and they wouldn't wake up LOL! We usually just watch tv for a little while, but honestly, DH and I are usually asleep shortly after the kids.

I've read it on other threads that some people bring their Apple TV! My husband said he is bringing it next trip the only downside of course is the internet and of course if you have Apple TV but our suite at AOA had the right inputs for it and my husband is very excited to utilize it next time.

I was looking at the TV in the OKW studio we stayed at a few weeks ago and decided that we could bring our chromecast device and attach it the next time and watch netflix on the tv.

Otherwise MY Dh falls asleep first when we hot the room, My DS next then me. We don't have any need to bring stuff to do in the room because we are tired.

From the time they were 3 our boys were commando about being in the parks! We would go back in summer to cool off and swim, then dinner, and head back and stay till 11pm or after. However, our boys are great on schedules that get changed at WDW. I have seen other families need to get kids to bed at the same time as home. Balcony is a great option if you have one. As for what you can do in the room depends on how deep your children sleep. We could watch TV and play on computers without them waking up.

We don't do naps and lots of swimming!

I actually find this thread amusing because what did we do without all the toys? We had regular TV and that was it. Or *gasp* board games with moving pieces and no electronics. And before I get painted into an antique room, I'm only 51 years old.

I'd think about what to do if the satellite dish (or cable) went out at home. That's putting it on today's terms. Of course, we could get a game on our phones.....

Watch tv, check email, etc. We never turned the lights off so they could go to sleep, just turned them down. We didn't stick to the early bedtimes though.

We were usually asleep shortly after the kids...but we stumbled on an in-room TV channel that was all old Disney cartoon shorts (lots of Mickey, Donald, and Goofy), that was really enjoyed watching.

Just a couple of years older than you and I remember the "good ole days" too :) I just broke down and bought a Kindle 3 months ago, a laptop 2 years ago, IPOD (gift) 4 years ago...........and what do I do in a hotel room, read a real book and fall asleep :lmao: I spent 11 days at Disney a year ago and we joked that we didnt even know that there was a TV in the room - trust me there was, a large flat screen TV on the dresser at POFQ but I think we turned it on once to check the weather ?

But to the OP - if you decide to take your laptop/DVD's I have found that its easier to travel with the DVD's out of their cases, I put them in a CD binder, I have a few with just 10 sleeves in them from my old CD's and they work great.

On one of our previous trips, DH figured out that we could hook up our video game systems to the TV in our room. So, this past trip we stayed up and played PlayStation 3 after DD fell asleep. :rotfl2: Although, we didn't last too long because we are always exhausted from spending the entire day at the parks! :goodvibes Some days I just check my email and upload some of my favorite pictures we took that day, and then hit the hay!

When we stayed at ASSp, we read and watched TV. When we were at the Beach Club, we were spoiled. Hubby and I took turns walking to EPCOT to watch Illuminations. At POP this year, I will be doing laundry or going to bed too!!
