Ugh. Despicable. I don't care how historic something might be, or if it had been in the family. I'd keep it in a box, or I'd donate to an historic museum, not hang it in my house. To me, hanging a picture of someone in my home is a place of honor, love, respect or admiration. I wouldn't hang a picture of a murderous racist, no matter where it came from. And you bet I'm going to form an opinion about someone who would, and not a very good one.

I don't see how a you can compare a frame and to a portrait (and what difference does it make if they are drawings?). There are plenty of historic memorabilia to chose from, why pick someone who was a clan member?

And I wouldn't care if it was "handed down their family" I'd want to distance myself from such ugliness, not display it in my home.

You don't know why they have the drawings. And if those are actual portraits of those men, they could have some historical value. I asked about them being drawings as in old sketches drawn during their lives.

There are many "historical" figures that did as much or much worse than the original klan members.

If you have anything in your family that is handed down from someone like that, it is certainly your choice to get rid of it. They, too, have a choice. Doesn't make them bad.

They may have taken them down or at least took them out of the public eye, not because they are ashamed but because they were being judged. Obviously owning a picture makes someone racist

Not the poster you are asking, but it sounds like you are calling someone racist because of a possession they have. If you have a $20 bill you also have a possession that could be judged in that way.

While I am native American and am not a fan of the $20, I do not see someone using the currency the same has if they had a picture of Jackson on their wall. A lot of atheist still use currency. Using it does not make them religious.

I am part Native American and part black, and I do not think that a person who has the confederate flag, or a portrait of a horrible person, or even a $20 is racist. Why? We do not know the history, for the family, behind the items these people have. I have a friend that displaces the confederate flag, because it was his great grandfathers and it has some kind of history for the family. Is he racist? No, he is not. You would just assume he was racist and judge him without knowing him.

I'm glad that you can look past what others feel are red flags of racism to the individual . I believe that will our best hope to overcome racism in our country. That being said, I think there is a vast difference between simply having the Confederate flag or portraits of Confederate generals and honoring them in a self-proclaimed Patriotic Room.

I don't feel that they are using their kids as props. I believe that they are using the show to minister to the world. They have strong beliefs and would like to share them in hopes that they would encourage others to think about their own beliefs and choices.

And nope, I am certainly not in favor of their lifestyle. But I can put aside my own judgement in order to allow them to spread the word about their belief system, as I would hope that others would do for me.

Even if Jim Bob and Michelle say that their kids can only do thus and so, or can't do thus and so, contrary to popular belief, the kids do have free will and can break away if they wanted to. Would they be ostracized by J & M, maybe (probably), but don't get it twisted - unless they are tied up in the basement, they can leave the house and live their lives any way that they want.

Heck, even Jim Jones had refugees.

I don't have pictures of any southern generals in my home or a confederate flag but I don't think a southern family having pictures (and aren't these drawings?) of them necessarily makes them racist. They could be something that was handed down in their family. I have seen families that displayed things like that for that reason.

My bil bought a painting of one from an estate sale. No clue which one it is. But it was something the family had for a very long time. He isn't racist.

And I knew an old lady down that I visited once that had a beautiful painting of herself hanging in her living room. She started telling me about the history of the frame. Apparently it came from Germany and had hung in Hitler's home. She was not German but it came from some family member that was in Germany and passed down to her. Not something I would have but didn't make me think any different of her. To her it was a part of history.

a picture frame that once hung in an evil persons home, and an actual photo of said evil person being displayed in your home are two completely different things.

I think the sharing their belief system is how they justify what they are doing to themselves. I think they are first and foremost about the money.

i'm pretty sure killing and/or humiliating a person based on their skin color is one of the worst things you could possibly do.

So, if you had a portrait of say, Hitler (or Stalin, or any other horrid dictator, slaughterer), that was handed down to you by family, you would hang it prominently in a room dedicated to how you feel about your country and history?

I don't believe this is true in the least. Michelle's family and Jim Bob's sister and niece Amy do not have the same beliefs as the family and they spend a lot of time with them. They would not kick their kids out.
