Welcome! I'm going to assume you are on your phone or tablet. The emoticons are viewable on a computer (there's also a box of them where you can click to insert them) but on phones and tablets they usually just come up as the commands, such as :thumbsup: instead if the graphic. Take a look at the actual website instead of the app and it will be obvious.
