The dreaded "Walk of Shame"

As we left Disney World at the end of our last trip my children were clutching each other and sobbing. I can't imagine how they'll be at the end of our upcoming cruise. If you're on the March 1st sailing of the Magic be sure to wave to the nice family doing the saddest walk of shame/sadness/sorrow ever.

I can't believe the comments I'm reading! Whatever happened to enjoying the moment? Happiness doesn't last but neither does misery.

i agree...i am usually pessimistic by nature and while i'm sad the last day of the cruise i don't count down the days upon arrival...

The day: Our departure day after 8 incredible days at WDW
The place: In front of the Animal Kingdom Villas
The players: Me and DH along with a family of 5 we have never me and probably never will

The moment of pain: Having checked our bags through AKV's airport service, we had our carry-on bags in hand as DH and I walked to the curb in front of the AKV lobby. DH gave our taxicab voucher to a cast member. I am watching as people are going various directions.

A car pulls up. The family gets out. A CM greets them. Discussion takes place I cannot hear. The mother/wife then says to the CM assisting them, "I wonder if you could check if our room is ready early by chance. I was given the room number when I called from the airport. I was told we would be in 7808."

- wait for it -

Our room we just checked out of after it being home for the last 8 days. And now it was going to be theirs. Waaaa-aaaaaaa!

Yes, upon receiving our last room service delivery on the last night of the 5 day/4 night cruise, reality starts to creep upon us.

Yes, I agree whole-heartedly it is a WOS. I feel a little Eeyore-esque as we walk back down the gang plank. Even though I love Eeyore and he is my idol, I still frown at the WOS.

I am a DVC member and WDW is "my home away from home". Unfortunately, not quite as often as we Disneyfiles would like.

I do believe it is the booking, the planning, the countdown, the anticipation and the excitement during the journey to get to that day that hits me for a few seconds and as I said then I refocus and enjoy every moment.

the second we step through the Mickey Ears tunnel, over the gangplank and onboard for the greeting, I internally hear myself whispering, "the beginning of the end'. Makes me sad for a moment and then I refocus and move on. Getting off is a different story, I never look back...it would only bring tears to my eyes. The cure....plan another Disney trip ASAP!

Yeah, the WOS is never fun. Planning another trip will always help.

In cruise terms, the walk of shame is also known as what people do walking (or running) up the pier because they are late in getting back to the ship ;)
Leaving isn't the walk of shame, but the walk back to reality.

LOL. I found that out after I started this thread. I guess it has several meanings. :thumbsup2

Having done the last 4 years WDW in December (and those bonus trips due to work), last year we switched instead to our first DCL - originally for November, was fast tracked to August. Planned ahead for WDW in December 2013, and DCL in December 2014...

So this xmas was miserable - "We miss Disney" was the norm... So before the year ended, and seeing Kids Sail Free out of Miami, two words to DW, and we are set to go on a 5n on the Wonder in 13 days!

Plans for 12/13 and 12/14 are still on - maybe scaled back a bit, but still on!

And YES! I feel that 'walk of shame' and see it. EVERY trip.

Nice, so 12 days left till you're on the Wonder? Sweet. Were the two words to DW "Let's go!"?

I think the 1st disney cruise will all be the hardest for the kids to leave unless they have just had a string of bad luck. But that's hardly ever the case from the TR's I've read. I will be on the Fantasy in June so I will have to find another family to wave at. :rotfl:

Ouch, hits me right in the heart. I feel you. :crazy2:

Can't wait to become a DVC member. Then I can finally have my "home away from home."

Annual Passes/DVC are the only cure I've found . . . "Kids, tell Mickey we'll see him next month . . ." Smiles as they climb in the car.
No, we do NOT live in Florida . . . often considered moving, though!

I always make sure my next vacation is well into the planning stages when the current one is ending, no matter the vacation. And re-booking onboard is great deal and a great cure for the departure blues.

I like that...I bet it makes the kids feel better...

I got off the wonder last Thursday and I am still sad! It takes me a good few weeks to really stop thinking about it constantly! I do always rebook while on ship so I have something to look foward too. My first cruise was a 7 night and this past one was only a 5, so for our next cruise we booked a back to back 4 night then 3 night because I was so sad getting off the ship this time....

HAHAH The Walk of Shame! Yes, I know it well. I get bummed, but as others said, booking another cruise/ trip eases that pain a LOT. I had it the worst on our last DCL cruise to Alaska last year. We had spent two weeks in Washington, one week sightseeing (Mount Rainier, Olympic National Forest, Seattle, etc) and one week for the cruise. It was a LOT of excitement, then... have to go home, back to work the following day... and we didn't know our schedules so I booked our dummy cruise for more than one year out. After disembarkation we were planning to stay an extra night in Seattle so we didn't have to rush to the airport and could sight see some more. But... DH and I ended up so bummed that we spent most of the day laying in bed at the hotel watching "Storage Wars" and eating pizza LOL. :worried::(:guilty: (We need a Walk of Shame smiley LOL).

And I hate that "See You Real Soon!" banner. It makes me frown even more!

Ok, i have cured my anxiety about the cruise ending simply by adding one day to the end of my trip!!! We will be staying at one of the cheaper hotels but we will be visiting a park (not sure which one yet) on disembarking day. Its amazing. That feeling that I had is completely gone!!! :cool1:

Just curious...

Why "shame" and not "sadness"?

Did you do something on the cruise/vacation to be ashamed of? If not, I'm trying to figure out why you'd use shame. :confused3

People started calling it that on the boards awhile ago.

Weird. Ending a vacation is DEFINITELY not what I think of as a walk of shame. To me, that's slinking home after a night of being where you shouldn't have been...usually in the clothes you were wearing the night before, though they're significantly rumpled and maybe not even all there anymore.

And I never thought of myself as that wild, but if ending a vacation is "shameful" to this group... Wowza.

Huh...I think of it more as "it's such a shame that lovely vacation is over."
But apparently I'm pretty G-rated.

That's why I think "sadness" or even "woe" would be more appropriate than shame. I feel sad at the end of the vacation. I don't feel shamed. :)

I think the worst way to do it was the way I did it last time:

I had a purple inflamed swollen ankle from a fall the night before (yay alcohol and dehydration! That's a bad mix there!) and had to walk out. I had all my luggage (and because I'm awesome and fly Southwest it meant a lot of luggage) and zero bra (because once again alcohol and packing.... somehow my uncle told me to put away my clothes that I had left out to wear the next day and I packed my bra for the plane ride over), super Port Canaveral heat, and my uncle (because if you can't guess now he's not the hero of this story.) kept knocking his suitcases into my very swollen and painful ankle. Walking through the gangway, getting all the luggage from the place where customs is (which is like a dungeon. Not very Disney magical!), and schleping through the airport on a Disney hangover and a hurt ankle.... not amazing. Oh and because I was even more awesome going through security in the airport, I forgot I had my Key to the World card in my pocket and was irked that I had to take off the shoe that took me 20 minutes that morning to put on, so when they told me there was an anomaly and I'd need a pat down... well I lifted my shirt to what I thought was my tummy (where the yellow spot on the scanner was showing) Nope! A lot higher. A couple we met on Castaway Cay the day before was like "you looked so pissed off and irritated. The TSA just became the T and A."

That day was a big walk of shame "how not to go on a Disney vacation!" "how not to use your nursing judgement and forget the signs and symptoms of heat stroke!" :D
