I see a lot of people do split stays, to me it seems like it would be a pain, washing clothes to repack and the repacking and moving.

So My Question Is Why Do You Do It ?

on my last minute trips - generally do split stays.

sometimes want a completely different - like a few days at OKW then go with BWV

or AKV then BLt.

The first time we did it was for financial reasons. We had a budget and airfare was higher than we anticipated, so we split POR/YC instead of the whole trip at YC. Since then, it's been a way to try new resorts and go back to favorites all in the same trip. It's like two vacations for the price of one set of airline tickets.

We rent a car so moving itself is easy. I pack the suitcases so there's one we don't even open at the first hotel. I don't mind doing the packing and I don't necessarily do laundry to make the move. It depends on the length of the trip.

So My Question Is Why Do You Do It ?

Split stays are a great way to try different resorts in the same trip and/or to save some money. Sometimes a discount is only offered for part of someone's trip, so they do a split stay to take advantage of the discount for some of the nights. I think split stays are great if the trip is long enough. We have done them in the past, but I wouldn't do it again unless our trip was at least 9-10 nights as anything less than that isn't worth it to us. Disney does make split stays easy as they will move your luggage between resorts.

I love split stays. When I go in 20 days, my 19 y/o dd and I will spend our first 4 nights at AS Music, then move over to AoA-LM for 2 nights. I don't normally switch between 2 value resorts, but LM was waaaaay too expensive to stay in for the entire trip....paying $176 for Sat night, and $140 for Sunday vs $90 average a night at Music!! But, dd wants to stay at LM just once.
Other stays I've moved 4 or 5 times...way confusing, and nothing I would ever recommend to anyone.

But, I don't do laundry...I figure it's not different than staying put at one resort the entire time. I just leave some stuff in my suitcase, for the second part of the trip. Then, all the dirty stuff goes into a laundry bag and put into the suitcase.

We're doing a split stay because we want to be on the DP for part of it, and we want to be on CL for the other part when we're not on the DP (for a calorie-conscious family, it seemed a bit excessive to have both). Even if we were staying at the same resort, to have each during different parts of our stay requires two separate reservations and a change of room, so we were all in agreement that it would be exciting to stay at a different resort for each segment of the trip to experience two different resorts. All of us couldn't be more excited about it, either! :)

We won't wash clothes (I never do laundry on vacation) and since I have a good suitcase system where I'll pack one suitcase for one part of the trip and another for the second part of the trip, it won't take more than a half hour the night before to pack. Bell services will move our luggage, or we are more than happy to do it ourselves as we will be renting a car. Checking in and checking out takes a half hour tops (online check in for both, all room charges settled the night before departure), so, in theory, we really shouldn't lose much time at all with the move.

I don't do laundry on vacation...I just bring enough clothes! I also have my suitcase organized so I don't bother taking everything out to put it in a drawer, and then have to pack everything up again. Honestly, doing laundry would probably take more time than it takes to switch resorts.

I am staying one night at ASMu with my cousin because we arrive late, and then the next day we move to POR when the rest of the family arrives for our package. In the morning I will just get ready, put my toiletries into my suitcase, zip it up, wheel it to bag services and have them send it to POR. I'll drop my key off at the front desk and hop on a bus to Epcot! Then when I want to return to the hotel I will take a POR bus. As the PP said, its less than a half hour and then you get to stay at two exciting hotels.

On this last trip we did a POR/BC split. Our main reason was that DD really wanted to stay in one of the new Royal Guest Rooms so we did a few nights there before moving over the BC, which is where we initially planned to do the whole trip.

We basically packed everything we needed for those first three days in our smallest suitcase so the other suitcases were generally undisturbed. It did take a little extra planning on the front end (deciding exactly what we were going to wear those days, whereas I usually just wing it once we're there) but it wasn't too bad.

We've done split stays before but the other times it was just one night tacked on to a longer stay somewhere else, generally because we were getting in late and didn't want to pay for a deluxe or one time we were able to come down earlier at the last minute and there was no availability to add an extra night to our existing reservation.

I did a split stay last summer with POR and the Poly because I couldn't afford to stay at the Poly the entire time. It was quite easy. We packed up the night before that took about 15 to 20 minutes. The next morning we brought our luggage downstairs and checked out. We went to Hollywood Studios for rope drop and stayed until about 2:00. Then we checked in at the Poly. Our room was ready and our luggage was already at the hotel.

We also never fully unpack when on vacation. Everyone has a carry on luggage that fit most of our clothing. I bring an almost empty larger suitcase with a laundry bag for each person. We throw our dirty clothing in our laundry bag and keep them in the suitcase that we ship. Our carry on keeps our clean clothing. I pack everything in outfits so we just grab an outfit a day.

Even though we did our first split stay because of budget. We will do another one this summer because I want to try out more resorts.

Interesting thread, like to hear more....

For the person who moves their own stuff, how long does it end up taking? (packing, transfer and check in and back in the park)

Does everyone do it or just one person?

For those that have Disney do it: which we did once - I think we packed our stuff and left with desk first thing in the morning and left for the parks. I believe our stuff was there by 1:30 to go back for afternoon kiddy naps (we mentioned this)

I was wondering how long it took for your stuff to transfer, the experience, has anyone had a so called bad experience? Did you tip and if so how much?

I guess I am wondering if it is worth it. The way we did it, it was not. The transfer went smoothly, but we only did it for one night (I don't remember why), but I think I wanted to save a bit of money and experience a different resort. Well experiencing a different resort we didn't really get to. We moved from Beach Club to POR. The only experience of resort change we got was beneficial, but not the full deal. We got to get on the boat and ride down to Downtown Disney and back. We got to experience the bus stop once from POR.(which we were not impressed) We got to see what it was like to stay in the room for one night, which really was not enough, but still gave me the taste of this is tight compared to a deluxe. We had also stayed in the alligator Bayou for the extra bed, so it was not as pretty as the other rooms. We did not get to experience the pool or the restaurant and the walk to the rooms seemed so unlike deluxe. I think that is one of the things I like about the deluxe the most is the hotel experience and not motel. I love the lobbys and well I could go on but I still would like to experience different resorts...but we have been spoiled. And yes before anyone says it...I know you need to stay in the lower room before the deluxe on a split stay.

To have a split stay how many days on each end is really worth it?

I do split stays on almost every vacation now.

I do not unpack. I'm very organized and can live out of a 19" carry on for a week. All of my international vacations have taught me that!!!! I only remove my toiletry bag so packing/unpacking takes me less than 5 minutes.

The times we have done longer than a week stay or large group stays, we pack for the split stay. One piece of luggage is split between two people for the first leg and another piece of luggage is used for the same two people for the 2nd leg. Only the toiletries and outer garmets are used for both legs.

After a really botched luggage transfer we now move our own luggage via taxi. We go to the new resort, check in and get our room keys (even if room isn't ready) and leave our stuff with bell services. We are then free to head out for the day. This takes about 30 minutes to do ourselves.

The reason I do split stays is for dining purposes. We eat almost all of our dinners at resorts. So I do the resorts closest to leg 1 and then the resorts closest to leg 2. The amount of time we save for traveling to dinner more than makes up for the time it takes to transfer resorts. On top of that, we then get 2 different experiences.

My favorite split is BWI/AKL. We do the first leg with 5 park heavy days and eating at the Epcot resorts. Then we move over to AKL for 3 nights to slow it down and enjoy all 3 restaurants there at the end of our vacation.

We've done split-stays twice, for two trips where we planned to do some non-Disney things during our Florida visit. Its one thing to pay the Disney Property Premium while doing Disneyesque Things, but its another entirely to do so while doing Non Disney Things (which I'm sure will inflame Iger for daring to do non-Disney things while in Florida :) )

We did the first several days at SSR, did all of our Disney stuff, then moved to a great Residence Inn near Seaworld for the rest of our stay wherein we visited Seaworld, went out to Cape Kennedy for the NASA tour, and spent some time informally touring downtown Orlando.

We actually prefer to take a lighter load of clothes (party of five), do one load of laundry in room, and press on our way, so moving resorts was no big deal.

I don't wash the clothes. I don't even take them out of the bag. Just zip up the duffel bag and go.

Doing a split stay with 3 resorts in November, to save DVC points when I needed to extend a stay by one day before and one day after. Why book at the highest point level the first night when my flight lands at 10 PM? For the last day, why stay at BCV another night when BWV Standard was available for fewer points and I can just walk over there?

We did a split stay on our last trip and we are doing another on our next trip in October. We are spending 4 nights at BLT and then 4 nights at BCV. We like to do it so that we are close to the MK for half of the trip and then close to EPCOT and HS for the other half. The night we go to MNSSHP we will be able to walk home to the BLT. And then our favorite resort is BCV and we love to spend a lot of time at SAB. Our first split stay was last May and I really didn't mind packing up again. I'm very organized so it was fairly simple. And bell services couldn't have been any better. We had our bags picked up first thing in the morning, checked out and headed to one of the parks. Then at about 3-4pm we went to the next resort, BCV and checked in there and bell services brought our bags right up.

We do it to experience different resorts quicker than choosing one each time.

We do it because part of our trips involve hosting my extended family (where we need a 2 bedroom) and then they go home and we do not need a 2 bedroom for the 3 of us (nor do we WANT one, nor do we want to pay the DVC points for one).

We are already moving because we generally hit WDW and Universal, and simply must stay onsite for Universal.

etc.

Except for one part of our last trip we have a rental car. So on moving day we do one of two things. We might stash our stuff with the resort we're leaving, go about whatever we're doing, then later on (generally after check-in time) go back to Resort A to get our stuff, then head to Resort B to check in. Or if we don't have super-early plans, we take everything to Resort B, do the checkin process, and either take our stuff to our room if it's already ready or stash it with Bell Services there, then go about our business.

I always TRY to make moving-day into a swimming day or checking out resorts day or something other than a park day, but my family tends to change their minds about that and insist on a park anyway.

After our most recent trip, I've decided we MUST be staying longer than 3 nights in order to be OK with moving. We knew we had too many moves on our last trip but it simply could not be helped due to the necessary timing of other things (had to get in early, then a short Disney cruise, then Universal, then family, then they left), and it was made worse by a room change inside one resort... We hit our limit. :) Plus, tipping starts to get overwhelming after a few moves!

I don't know. I always feel it takes a shorter amount of time than my husband does. So he packs his stuff and I pack mine and generally DS's.

We all still travel in a pack. Someday we'll split up but for now we're still seeing new places to us, and we want to do it together.

Getting your stuff at the second resort that early is unusual. Never ever expect them until AFTER official check-in time.

You can send the stuff you absolutely will not need with Bell Services, knowing you won't see them until at least 3 or 4. Then pack a smaller bag with the day's essentials...park stuff, swimming stuff, etc. If you don't need the bag at that moment, stash it separately with Bell Services with the resort where you will be, and you can then get it from them as you need. Just keep it separate from the stuff you are having them *move*.

I see a lot of people do split stays, to me it seems like it would be a pain, washing clothes to repack and the repacking and moving.

So My Question Is Why Do You Do It ?

I agree with that exactly. That's why split stays aren't for me.

We are doing a split stay next trip. We are staying at Pop the first night because we don't get in until late and couldn't rationalize staying at a deluxe to just crash (still debating this in my head). We will move to Poly first thing in the morning for a 4 night CL stay. Then we move to BC for a 6 night CL stay.

We split for two reasons, the first is we wanted to experience two new resorts. We also wanted really easy transportation so now we only have to hop a bus if we want to go to AK.

We did a split stay last year, and are doing a triple split this year. Both are trips that are 13+ days.

We did it last year because we wanted to try a deluxe but could not do it financially for 13 nights. It did feel like 2 vacations in one.

We are doing a triple split this year. Some of it is $, but most of it is this: my husband is only able to come the last 7 days. As a family of 5, we are limited by resort choice. Since there will only be 4 of us for the first 11 days of our trip, we are staying at places we normally couldn't stay without getting 2 rooms or a villa (POFQ and AKL). We will follow that up with a return to the BC.

We do move our own stuff as we drive there. It doesn't take long, and I pack with this in mind.

I do laundry while at the pool usually - it doesn't take long at all.
