campgrounds in Williamsburg, VA

You have helped me out numerous times with campground recommendations in various parts of the southeast. Now I need a another rec.- My family wants to travel to Williamsburg this summer. We would like to stay at a home-owned, home-operated campground in the area. I've seen several when I search on Google, but I would like to have some first-hand experience from the experts on this board. Thanks for your help.

I wanted to make sure you saw poster kazlac4's post on the Camping Community board. He bumped an old thread and reviewed the Williamsburg KOA.

If you didn't see it you might want to check it out.

We did DC-Williamsburg in Dec 2008 between Christmas and New Years (but it was a hotel trip = cold weather). It's so cool to see so you really should go see it. Plus we did Mt. Vernon and Kitty Hawk, NC on the way home.

We stayed at American Heritage RV park 2 summers ago. Was very nice. Very close to historic Williamsburg and about 15-20 minutes to Busch Gardens. Don't stay at Anvil Campground unless you like to hear trains all the time. If you want ot be close to the beach Holiday L Travl Park is supposed to be very nice as well. Much better than the Va Beach KOA from what I have been told.

Since I am from SE, Virginia I will add my 2 cents!! American Heritage is nice and quiet. There were a lot of older campers there. We have young kids so we will not be gong back. VB KOA is a dud, stay away!! Holiday Trav'l Park in VB is very nice. it is our favorite local campground!!!! Back to Williamsburg, the KOA is the best for us. We like the scenery and the activities they offer. Anvil campground is small and loud!! It is between a busy road and a railroad track. They trains run all the time and will rock your world at night! If you get a site next to the 55mph road, you will have headlights and car noise all night. Just my humble opinion!!!

I stayed at the Williamsburg KOA. Not bad, not great. I didnt have to use the laundry or bathhouse, but the sites where clean, site access was easy in and out and not hard to level on. The price was fair.

I do not recommend the Anvil Campground - the sites are tight, loud, and we forfeited our deposit and left. We stayed at the KOA - it was nothing special, but the sites were large enough and quiet. I think I will try the recommendation for the American Heritage campground next time - the website looked interesting. Thanks for the heads up!

We can recommend the American Heritage Campground as well. Also, depending on whether or not you need a full hookup and if you really don't want a swimming pool, Newport News City Campground is a pretty good place to camp. Very shaded. Sites have water and electric, but no sewer. There is a dump station on site.

Several have posted about campgrounds in Virginia Beach. Those campgrounds are a good 1.5 hour drive to Williamsburg on a good day.....and in summer you could probably expect it to take 2 hours or more depending on traffic. There is a tunnel that frequently backs up traffic during the summer months.

American heritage was a great campground. Clean..quiet and friendly. Mostly everything is close by. I give my recommendation as well.

As a local I will say this with 30+ years of 757 tourist experience. Camping in vabeach w the intent to spend your days in the burg is like camping in conn to spend your days in nyc. Our traffic during tourist season blows making a 1 hr trip more like 2 hours. I agree w the one comment about train noise as that campground in right beside the amtrak/freight lines. I know the old jamestown camp grounds right by the ferry got bought by the county a few years back and now seem to be an obstical/adventure park.

We stayed at the Williamsburg KOA for a week last May. It is close to Williamsburg (of course) and Busch Gardens, but we wound up driving to attractions closer to Virginia Beach several times and racked up the miles. There are some nice family attractions within an hour's drive, PM me for more. The KOA itself was fine. Our daughter liked the bounce pillow and the pool was nice for kids. Playground equipment was minimal and in need of an upgrade, not that our kids noticed. There is a decent nature trail that connects the two halves of the campground. We didn't use or need the bathrooms or laundry. We never spent an entire day there, but it was a nice base for day trips.

We are at American Heritage RV now and I recommend it. We will come back for sure. It is in a great location, people are friendly. Sites are nice. No train running close by.

When you get into Delaware, get off 95 and head down RT 896. Pick up 301 and stay on 301 across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. When you get to Port Royal, turn left on RT 17 and take that to Saluda, turn right on RT 33 and follow that to RT 64. You'll have a few traffic lights to deal with, but the speed limit on 17 is 55 and there is virtually no traffic. Beats the heck out of sitting in the inevitable traffic jam on 95 in MD or VA.

yes but you need to realize there are SWATHS of 17 with nothing (no gas stations/bathrooms etc) and there are TONS of radar running state and local pd. so watch your speed.
