iphone glass shattered

UGH! So frustrated.

I dropped my iphone WITH an otterbox on it and the back glass completely shattered. I didn't even notice it for a couple of days as it is in the case, so that has been holding it together.

The front is in great condition and it still works fine, but when I pulled the case off to show DH glass shards starting falling on the kitchen countertop.

So frustrated! I thought I was protected with the otterbox. I mean, heck, I have dropped it many times before without an issue! I just know I often drop it from my seat in my car to the pavement (forget it is on my lap!)

Just a VENT!

Actually I think the otterbox company guarantees your phone won't break. Id call them and check. I know they are really good to work with.

I was surprised to learn that now Applecare + includes replacement for damaged phones with a $50 replacement fee. We purchased this for our two new iPhone 5s we just bought.

I also think otterbox does have some form of limited gaurantee - I'd call as well.

Otterbox is telling me they only cover their product and can replace the otterbox but not the phone or any repair to the phone.

They did offer me the replacement cost of the otterbox to use towards my repair.

This phone is over 2 years old, I don't think I can get Applecare for it.

I've learned the hard way that at those mall kiosks it runs around $100 to replace the front screen. We actually have a store front ubreakifix that does the repair in under an hour.

My DH ordered a replacement kit from Amazon I believe. He got a new screen and the tools put put it on in the kit. It was $50 I believe

Probably a good idea, it certainly can't hurt. Beyond that, I'd probably just cover the back with duct tape and pop it back in the case, as long as it is still working fine.

I don't think the PP was referring to a 5s model, but rather used the 's' as a plural.

Thank you.

Ok, did some research and so did DH. My research showed Apple would charge about $30 to replace the back glass.

DH found out that he can order an aluminum back instead of glass and replace it himself for under $20.

Otterbox is sending me almost $30 to cover the cost of their case that didn't protect as promised. That is the best they will do.

I leave for vacation Sunday so I think I will just use clear packing tape to keep the glass from throwing shards anywhere and deal with this when I get back from the beach.

My iphone back shattered last summer and the apple store charged me $28 to fix it. Consider yourself lucky...to replace the front its a lot more $$$

My friend replaced her front screen herself. Later she had a problem with her iphone (her camera stopped working). Apple wouldn't even touch her phone because it didn't have their screen on it. So be careful with replacing things yourself. Probably depends on which worker you get etc.

I really just need this phone to last another year and a half. That is when I can get DH's iphone 5 when he is eligible for a work upgrade! I have Straight Talk so no contract and no upgraded phones.

Replacing the parts isn't hard and the YouTube videos are great. :) I'm not adept at that kind of thing and did it reasonably easy.

Do you know if it was a Commuter or a Defender type?
I was just reserching Defender by Otterbox and the Survivor by Armored for my daughter's ipod touch. Think I may just pass on the Otterbox and go with the Survivor.

Sounds like the Commuter if Otterbox is only offering around $30 for replacement. IMO the Commuter is crap, I had one because I liked the color combination (pink and white) wound up giving it to a friend of my daughter. I watched that case disintegrate with daily teenaged use, the outer part was stretchy rubber. Now the Defender is a lot better. I've known people that have actually dropped theirs on the road and it survived

The back on the 4/4S (I assume that's what your daughter's is) is honestly SO easy to replace. Probably the single easiest part. You just unscrew the two screws on the bottom and it slides right off so you can slide the new one on and replace the screws. So if your husband can buy a replacement kit for $20, I'd say go for it :)
