Heading to the World this August. We do not want to get sick on our visit and are looking for ways to possibly prevent a cold and boost the immune system. As anyone had good luck using products like Airborne or Emergen-C? Or any ideas that you use and have had good luck with ?

There is absolutely no benefit to these products to prevent colds. Wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer and do NOT touch your eyes, nose or mouth unless you know your hands are clean.

Hand hygiene is the number one way to prevent infection and there is science to back that up. :) Have a healthy trip!

I used Emergen C daily for over a year, usually in a glass of orange juice. I did really notice a difference in boosting my immune system. It also gave me a small burst of energy after taking them. I'd say it is worth a try especially if you immune system is poor.

However, I switched to vitamins from Walmart and it made even more of a difference. Then I switched to good, quality vitamins and that has made so much more of a difference in my health. I used to be sick all the time. It improved a bit with Emergen C. It improved incredibly with my quality vitamins. I hardly ever get sick and when I do it is less severe than normal. :)

I take 4,000 iu of vitamin D3 daily (Carlson brand) and 2000 mg Fish Oil (Vitacost brand) daily. I also take vitamin b12 but that is because I am deficient in those vitamins which was determined through bloodwork. All of us in the US are deficient in Vitamin D and fish oil is a good supplement to have anyway.

I have never been a vitamin "person" and am not a health junky. I was really floored that it has made such a difference in my life. I have started to give my kids 400 iu of vitamin d everyday and have noticed a difference in them as well.

Enjoy your trip! Hope you stay super healthy to be able enjoy everything!

I agree - from what I've read, neither of these products works.

I'd suggest you ask your doctor for his/her opinion. Chat boards aren't the most reliable place to get advice on stuff like this - you'll get tons of opinions, but a doctor would be the best source to ask.

I use "Wellness Fizz", the natural alternative to Airborne, as well as elderberry tincture and Vit D supplements (needed during our long Maine winters). I only use the first two when I feel a cold coming on. The stuff works for me so I'm a believer. I've had one cold in the last year...

Not only doesn't Airborne have any benefits - they were actually fined by the Government (FDA) for falsely claiming that they did.

This is a COMPLETELY different usage than what the OP is asking for - all that Vit B/C helps metabolize the alochol & avoid hangover symptoms but it doesn't do anything to bolster your immune system.

OP - look into a good probiotic. Your best bet is spending a few months ahead of your trip getting your immune system built up to defend itself naturally. If you google "probiotics" & "immune building" you'll turn up tons of info on strategies to get your immune system in top-notch shape.

I made DD start taking them a few weeks ahead of our Oct trip when everyone was reporting high incidents of illness after visiting the World & we had no issues during or after. We also take a few other vitamin supplements specific to our individual needs. :thumbsup2

This may just be complete luck but when I take Airborne on a trip (chewables, 4/day), I never get sick. When I don't and fly or go somewhere like Disney, I always end up with a nasty cold. Could be a total coincidence but seems to help me!
