Tux Rental for Prom

So, how much did it cost you to rent a Prom Tux (recently)? I don't know what I thought it was going to cost, but it definitely kind of surprised me. I'm thinking now that I should have asked to price out different styles, although my son is hard to fit.

What did you pay (approximately) for Tux, shirt, tie, vest, shoes?

My son's prom is May 11. We rented the tux at a local shop- not a chain. He got a basic, notch collar, 2 button black tux. With vest, shirt and straight tie, it was $99. No shoes- he has a pair of black dress shoes and will be wearing those. The guy walked him around all of the display, explained the styles, and my son's girlfriend picked what she liked ;) She happened to pick the one he would have picked anyway. His was middle of the road in price.

The tuxes at this place ranged from about $59 and up.

My ds got asked to the prom the other day. So now its a rush to find him a tux r a suit. Its this friday so I'm stressing.

My son's prom is this Saturday and we didn't seem to have any problems renting it today. Good luck!

Our prom is on the 11th, and DS was asked on Friday, to go with one of his girl friends. She has a boyfriend who is "too old" according to school policy to go, so she asked DS if he would like to go. He said that he will run it by DH and I before confirming.

DS is on cloud 9!

A suit - not a tux - rental is around $70. I purchased him shoes when he went to Homecoming last year, for the same cost as a rental, so he does not need those.

He just needs to confirm with her that he will be her date, and then we can get the tux. He also needs to figure out who is paying for what. I am not sure of the protocal when a girl asks a guy - especially a girl who already has a boyfriend.

$130-150 depending on the style - out the door.

Our son only rented the shirt, vest and tie - $70.

He wore his own dress shoes, kilt with hose and sporran, hat and his Dad's jacket.

Not renting a tux. Our prom is this saturday and DS is tall and thin. So, he is going with a tux shirt and black tie and black cumberband. Ordered them last night through amazon for $48 (prime so shipping was included) and it will be here tuesday.

He will pick up a new set of black slacks to go with the jacket and shoes he already had.

Suits are replacing tux around here. Think it's the economy and the fact that we're in a military town that just had its military ball (wear the uniform with a white shirt and bow tie). Alot easier to find a dress for decent price.

We have usually each paid their own way. DS did this 2 of the 3 years he went in HS. The first year a senior asked him, but she expected him to pay for everything. DD went this year with a boy that is in her group of friends and they each paid their own way.

I talked to the tux shop when DD was getting her dress altered and they said tuxes were running in the $75-$150 range depending on what you pick.

Both of my daughter's dates wore suits with vests to the proms she went to this year.

Okay, as I suspected, I paid too much. I got $10.00 off this "already discounted price." According to the receipt:

Vera Wang Slim Fit 38R extra long sleeve - $159.99
31R OS 41.5 $10.00 (Pants I think!)
Shirt - $5.00
Vest - $20.00
Tie - 2.50
Something else - $2.50
Shoes - $20.00

I rented this a Mens Warehouse which is just a big chain that sells menwear (suits mainly) and they have a tux rental section. The only other place close by was a bridal store.

By us it was $120 with a $40 off coupon for a standard tux. Instead I measured my son and bought a standard tux off Overstock.com for $71 shipped, $10 for the hem at the local cleaners, 25 for a white tux shirt shipped on Amazon, $11 for the black tie and cumberbunt shipped on Amazon total $107 and now he owns his own tux if he needs one at another time for less than rental cost. He already had dress shoes. He left tonight and looked great. PS. you can get a vest and bow tie for about $20 on Amazon too. PS. I had 2 months to search prices and watch Amazon prices go up and down for the shirt and cumberbunt, vest, bow ties and got them at the lowest cost.

We've spent anywhere from 130.00 to 200.00......but my son pics out the pin stripe, etc. I'm glad we don't have to rent another one for quite a few years ;). Oh and we've always rented from Mens Wearhouse as well. I do think they are a bit more expensive and seriously they have gotten the pant length wrong 4 times out of 6 so I don't know why we keep going back LOL. There just aren't a lot of places to rent tuxes around town. Oh and not all our rentals were for prom, there was one for banquet and a couple for weddings...etc.

Men's Warehouse is pricey. My son's high school has some sort of relationship with them, so he had received $40 off coupons in the mail a few months ago. Plus, school sent them home too. I had been warned by other moms to avoid it. The place we went is a local place that rents for all occasions, but it is a popular place for wedding parties, and has been in the area for years.

We got smart after Jr. prom last year and scoured the Goodwill's for tux's for this years prom. We lucked up and found a great basic one for 15 bucks. He had a white dress shirt, found the shiny shoes in "perfect" condition for 5 at a yard sale. Add in cleaning for the tux at the dry cleaners and we spent maybe $30 bucks total. Oh and add a vest and tie new from eBay, we just sold something to buy it so that was a wash. He already had his prom last weekend, he had a blast and we didn't have to spend a fortune. :)

I was surprised how much it cost - we got the basic black tux, vest, tie, shoes, hankerchief, white shirt, suspenders - it is 187.50 to rent. That includes the 20.00 rush fee because we rented it on Monday and Prom was tonight.

I wish he'd known he was going earlier so we had time to shop around but we didn't. Once I heard the price I wanted to just buy him a suit but he wanted the tux because that's what all the other guys were wearing. He was very happy with the tux and said he looked awesome so that's a good thing.

On the plus side, we looked around the store and he liked their dress pants and dress shirts and ties so we'll probably go back there when they have a sale on those. He needs a few of those for upcoming events.

Yeah, that's what I'm not figuring out but they were the closest to the house, and then there was the big bridal place. Otherwise, I didn't know where to go. Guess I should have researched this one better. Sheesh. I did have the $40 coupon and I got that because my husband has bought a few suits there.

The only positive thing I have to say about getting ripped off is that at least my son's sleeves will be long enough. He is thin with LONG arms. When I had to buy him a suit a few years ago, I had to scour the stores just to find one where he didn't look ridiculous because the sleeves were too short. I actually doubt there would have been any way I could have gotten some deal on a tux-like suit for him and found one with long enough arms. The person at Men's Warehouse was emphatic that the jacket would have long enough sleeves.
