I currently have a cricut expression and I am frustrated with it. I have been looking into the silhouette a little bit can someone please explain to me how this is different from the cricut? From what I can tell is you can cut svg files do you need a separate program like SCAL or can you just do this right out of the box? Also is it just svg files that you can cut or can you cut any true type font from your computer too? Thanks for the help.

You can cut the fonts you own on your computer!!!!! You can also shadow them!

I only have the portrait because I wanted it mainly for titles..

But yes, you can cut svg files right out of the box no added programs.

I will refer in more detailed questions to the cameo owners who have more experience than myself... but to be honest it is well worth the money..

I signed up for freebie files to cut from misskatecuttables.com (they have some sale items for 50 cents!)... the freebies come out everyday so you only have that day to upload them but they cut awesome!!!!

Awesome. Thank you so much for the info. I want to broaden my horizons and the cricut is just so limiting(and expensive) and I missed the boat on the SCAL. I will definitely check out the website you mentioned as well.

The Sil (Cameo or Protrait) will cut directly out of the box with the included software which is Sil Studio (SS). If you upgrade to SS Designer Edition (SSDE) then you can cut svg's directly.

(but if you want to cut svg's with out SSDE, you can open the svg's with inkscape, and resave the file as another extention and you can cut that file)

SSDE retails for $50, but is often on sale for $25-$30.

Also, Sil has their online store that sells .studio files. And they give away a free file each week, so go start collecting your free files!

At the Sil Store, the cut files are 99 cents each or you can buy a monthly subscription to make it cheaper. (year long commitment is required).

Any font on your computer can be cut, or shadowed, welded, stretched, mirrored, or curved....

There are SO many websites with free svg's. Also check out the SCAL forum as there are lots of free svg there. Also svgcuts has free svg files. And don't forget our own Disney specialist... Reedy.....

OR just ask here on the board, we can make most anything if given a picture/photo, or teach you how to do it! Or send you to the right websites to learn yourself.

laughing at being called Reedy - my maiden name is Reed

hmmm what is the extendion for the cameo to use my files - I make them in inkscape so saving them in another extension shouldn't be hard to do

OK must work in inkscape, must work in inkscape
don't know why I'm having hard time working on Jimmy Cricket - need to do last check on Pinocchio

Reddy, I use your files in the extension .SVG that you have... I haven't had time to cut the file yet but I got your Everest Yeti to save and open up.. I only had to make it smaller for my 8x11 mat and then ungroup it so I could move them around the page to make an easier cut when I'm ready...

I did update to the Designer Edition..my DH gave that to me for my anniversary..

sorry about that... glad I gave ya a laugh!

the extn is .dxf

but I don't keep those file types, as it is just easier to use .svg and only have ONE file type to keep track of.
