Running Costumes

Iapologize if I placed this in the wrong category.

I'm registered to participate in the EEC next month and am debating whetehror not to wear a costume. DH is running too, but isn't wearing a costume. All costume ideas that I have seen are for e more slender figure. Do any plus sized females wear running costumes?

I figure since it's a Disney race I can get away with a costume quite easily, but am not sure of what? What are some that you've done?

You can dress however you want, appropriately obviously, but no one will turn and stare. You may get nice costumes and such. EEC though, in my opinion, has been the least dressed in costume race I've done. I did it with my wife last year and we were sailors, mine looked like sailor moon, hers was more a sailor dress. We were going to be the French Maids this year, but didn't register.

I don't know about EE but marathon weekend...yes yes and YES! I have seen everything from a full fledged snow white costume running the half to a woman in a full length grass skirt running the full. I have seen lots of costumes but for women mostly what I see are a tutu.
I dressed as a sort of Tinkerbelle/PeterPan mix for the 5k race this year. For the half I dressed as Minnie and no costume for the full.

I had this idea...buy or make a white tutu....buy the bridal minnie mouse ears with the veil and go as bride minnie!

You can DEFINITELY wear a costume!

There are several people on Etsy who sell tutus -- just type in 'running tutu.' There are several sellers who also specifically make them in plus sizes.

Also, Sparkle Skirts come in plus sizes -- with a lot of different colors.

Hope you have a wonderful race!

In a somewhat related question, I am a youth pastor that challenged my students at church to bring in canned goods for our food bank. They responded in a big way and part of my challenge was for them to pick a "punishment" if you will for me in response to their good work. They chose for me to run a local 4 mile trail race in a Disney costume (either princess, Tink, or Minnie). Since I'm a guy, this is supposed to be even more embarrassing for me. :rotfl2:

Anyway, any suggestions for a bigger guy? I'm 6' and about 210lbs. I'm running in my trail shoes, but despite the costume, I still plan to average about 8 min. miles so I want something comfortable and cool. Temps are expected to be in the high 70's to mid 80's that day.

A white tutu with bridal minnie ears that come with a veil. Simple but effective...you will be the runaway bride.

If sewing is a skill set in your family, you could do a simple circle skirt (for Princess, Tink, or Minnie) with elastic waist (or if not a tulle tutu only takes cutting and knotting) either can be paired with shirts or head gear to make any of those costumes.

or require the youth group to come up with your costume. They will probably enjoy the challenge and think it will be more embarrassing for you if they come up with the outfit.

They are voting now on my costume. The decision will be made tomorrow night at church. I'm trying to stick to something I can just order as the race is in less than 2 weeks and I do not sew well enough to go that route. I've seen quite a few tinkerbell costumes that looked like they would fit if I ordered the plus size version. I'm a 34" waist and broad chested (yes, I'm not your typical runner-lol) so it'll take the plus size version to fit me.

I have quite a few tattoos and a beard so I will be the ugliest Tinkerbell in history, but I think it might be the best option. :lmao:

RangerPooh: Definitely wear a costume if you want to. You will not feel oput of place. Something as simple as just having a running skirt will do! Disney races are the perfect races to dress up for.

Dragitoff: Good luck coming up with an outfit to run in. You'll have to post a picture of what your kiddos came up with!

After persuading myself that I would not do a costume for my first 2 Disneyland 1/2 races, I finally convinced myself to do a costume for the 2012 Wine & Dine 1/2.

The one piece of advice that I was given was to run in my costume first to make sure I knew how I would react to it and could decide whether or not the costume would be worth it, especially since my Prince Phillip (from Sleeping Beauty) costume meant I would be running with a cape. My costume consisted of a long sleeve black tech shirt and a gray tech tank top with a red pillowcase for the cape.

So I did one of my last training sessions in costume to see how my body reacted to layers and a cape. Since this was a night race, it helped to keep me from getting cold while waiting for the race to start and went about as I expected it to during the race. Since I had never trained or raced in long sleeves before, I was glad that I knew ahead of time how my body would react to this.

Even running on a treadmill can help you know how your body will respond to the material, especially if there are new things you never ever or rarely wear.

I just want to say it's awesome you are letting them pick your punishment (within reason of course)! That is great for the kids for doing such an amazing job of collecting food!!

Need an update! :thumbsup2

I ended up running in a Snow White costume! I have no idea how to post pics here, but I have quite a few from the event. I had such a big lead on the next person behind me that I skipped across the finish line! lol.

My kids from church had a great time with it and I had a few show up to watch the race including one former student who is now in the Marines. He drove all night to come home and see me run this race. He said it was totally worth it.

I've done 3 Disney runs, 2 5Ks and the ToT 10-miler. There were very few costumes for the 5ks but notable ones...Batman, fairies, tutus, etc. There were people of all sizes wearing costumes, so no worry about "plus size" or not.

For the ToT there were a lot of costumes. I also saw a lot of discarded costume accessories along the side of the road. So, if it's too much, you can pick off stuff that you start with. Trust me, comfort is key since the main time anyone is going to be looking at you is at the beginning.

The best costume I saw was a Brazillian tour guide...LOL. She had the neon green shirt and was carrying the flag...still makes me laugh.
