Family pictures?

From reading, I gather that they take photos before dinner on "dressy night" on the 4 night itineraries. Is there any other place/time that they do this?

I have also read a few posts that say thy have "sought out" the ships photographers. Where are some typical locations for this?

The photographers from Shutters are typically in the Atrium taking photos in the evenings. On several evenings they had backgrounds set up for family photos, and on formal night there were some additional options (I.e., on the stairs, next to the Minnie statue). There was also an opportunity to have your photo taken with the captain. Photographers came into the MDRs a few times and walked around the tables taking photos. There are often (but not always) Shutters photographers at character greetings in other areas of the ship and on CC. Just consult your Navigator for times and locations. There is a handy box that show all greetings for the day. Plenty of opportunities for photos, and there are always people willing to take a photo of your family for you if you ask. We got a great one right outside Animator's Palate next to the sign.

They do family pics on formal night in front of multiple backgrounds. Also when you embark the ship they take a family pic. Other then that there is no designated time for family pics but you could do one with a character or have a photographer take one of your family when they aren't busy.

Other then that there is no designated time for family pics

This is not true. On every DCL cruise we have taken, there are multiple backgrounds set up in the atrium each night for portraits in addition to the Disney character greetings and themed photo ops.

If you have a large group (we cruised with up to 38 family members) you can schedule an appointment and have pics taken on the stairs by the atrium. We preferred formal night pics because everyone was dressed up, and did pics before dinner when clothes were clean and fit better. We did a big group shot, and broke into smaller branches of the family tree for additional pics.

The pics of great grandma with all the tiny kids was a "challenge" to set up. (It was sort of like herding cats.) The parents would hold their kids in place, and when the photographer was ready the parents would duck out of the way and the photographer would hurry and take the picture before the goomers crawled off.
