UY and booking questions

Finalizing a few details before we pull the trigger and purchase and ran into a few questions....

I'd like a few opinions. Typical travel time for us would be October and the first few weeks of December. What would be the optimal UY?

Piggybacking that... When booking do the points need to be available at the time or am I able to book at the 11 month mark knowing I have points coming to use? I hope that made sense.

And I would have to bank points 4 months out before expiration, yes?

There are probably many opinions but I think most would say that UY right before your travel time is best. So, if you had an Oct UY if you needed to cancel your October or December trip you would still be able to bank your points later. When making a reservation it matters when you are traveling. If you made a reservation today for travel in November with an October UY you would not need to worry because it is after you get your points that you are traveling that matters. Hope I helped!

if you have an oct UY and want to book dec 2013 (for example), you would have access to 3 UYs of pts:

Oct 2013 UY pts are valid for stays from Oct 1, 2013 to Sept 30, 2014
...plus banked 2012 UY pts (if any) would also be valid for stays from Oct 1, 2013 to Sept 30, 2014
...and borrowed Oct 2014 UY pts are also valid for stays from Oct 1, 2013 to Sept 30, 2014.

when you call in jan 2013 to book your home resort at 11 months out, you would have access to all 3 UYs of pts if needed.

the only time UY is really an issue is if you need to cancel. then you have more options if you are traveling early in your UY (oct and dec for an oct UY) and are in more of a risky situation if you are traveling in the last few months of your UY (jul-aug-sept for an oct UY).
