August Tent Camping~Wish Us Luck :)

We love tent camping and we love Disney. I hope those 2 things help us power through the heat and rain without killing each other

This will be our 1st time camping @ Disney. We usually take our trip for 2 weeks at Thanksgiving and stay in hotels like normal people, lol. Our oldest is starting Middle School in the fall and we were worried that missing that much time in Middle school might not be good. That coupled with our Anniversary and my Birthday being the end of August we thought we would try this out. Who wouldn't love to spend their Birthday @ Disney?!!

Anyway, we are pretty well oiled machines when it comes to our camping and to Disney. I'm sure with a few minor tweaks we can combine the 2 for a successful adventure.

We are towing a trailer down to haul as much creature comforts as possible. I plan to have 2 tent set ups, one for sleeping and one for a "living" area. Portable A.C. unit for sleeping and mini fridge is a must. Bringing our bikes. Packing clothes in plastic drawer storage bins instead of suitcases. (thinking it will keep organized like a dresser + keep clothes dry)

Anyway, lot's of plans, thoughts and schemes running through my head of how this will all come together. I'm continually surfing the boards to get more ideas. Any of you veterans out there please feel free throw me some tips. I know it will be stinking hot. I know it will most likely rain at least some daily. We very well may do this and never want to do it again but you only live once and we are always trying to make Disney a new experience each time we go. This will for sure be a new experience, lol.

wuld plan on some major thunder storms. had one last Aug bring down our screen house last morning. if you can cover tents with tarps, helps with getting water inside. plan on drying rack for towels. can not remember if lines are allowed.

Ouch! But, you already know about the heat/humidity combo at that time of year in FL (hopefully ). I am not a tent camper, so will leave the tips to others, but just want to wish you all the you can find. I don't know where you are from, but just be prepared for thunder storms with high humidity and heat index. At times you will feel like a steamed lobster (GRITS - Girl Raised In The South) Have a *wondefee* trip!

I haven't tent camped in awhile but when I did I liked my screen room over the picnic table just like I do now with my camper. I have a folding table for my stove but if theres not enough room I have put the stove on the picnic table. I used to have what we call a chuck box to hold pans, plates, seasonings, silverware, etc., I actually found mine at Sams a few yrs ago but I have seen where people made them. I like to put my cooler, bin with food, dish pans, under the awning. It just gives me that place for my kitchen and to eat in covered area. I have put rope lights around it, candles on table with my table cloth, and once I took small refrig and had my fan inside it. I also have these two small umbrella shaped clothes lines I hang up in each corner of the room to hang my swimsuits. One yr we had our screened room at Disney & everyone hung more towels than I realized on the bars of the screened room and it rained. The towels had gotten so heavy that they broke our room! We really liked our room because of its large size but we never did find one exactly like it to replace it.
Hope you enjoy your trip! We will be going in July which will aslo be very hot! LOL! But at least we won't have to worry about it being to cold to swim! LOL!

Honestly, I live in Florida and tent camp quite a bit, and have for over 30 years and would never tent camp in August much less at Disney. August is Hurricane season and in the middle of our rainy season... the heat/humidity and rain are enough to keep me away.

Other than that we were comfortable and dry. It rained some but nothing got wet.

Bring some carpets for inside the tent and outside the door of the tent...the sand stuff gets everywhere!

Yay!! It's comforting to know we won't be the only tent in the campground.

We will be there the last 2 weeks of August arriving on Sunday the 18th. This will cover our 13th Wedding anniversary and my Birthday.

We would only be having fans as well except my DH just happened to get his hands on a portable AC unit from work for free. Can't beat that

Are you requesting any particular loop/site or are you leaving it to the Disney Magic Gods?

Our favorite loop is 2000. Spots are larger that 1500, especially for two tents. Sounds to me like you already have a great plan in place. I agree that a screen room might be a good idea. I can't remember the "Love Bug" seasons, but it would at least keep out the mosquitos and give you some shade.

At first, I thought our 'stuff' would be hauled in our new pop up, but we didn't buy...yet. Now I'm thinking along the lines of what you're planning. What kind of trailer? A cargo type?
Can you feel those things when loaded, behind you? Who else has done that, hauled stuff down, not rv. ?

We have a utility trailer to haul all our camping gear as we are a family of 6 with the kids being teens. My oldest is 17 and 6'2! Our trailer is 5x8 and my husband built a 3 foot box that sits inside, and bungy cord a thick tarp over the top. We paid around $1300 for the trailer. This will be our third season using it and it has come in handy for other things as well! Best investment we made as far as camping gear! Kids love it because we can haul their bikes!

You were cold at night in August in FL?

I can see it being cold, as everything is damp and wet, so that alone would make it chilly! Just have to figure away to keep comforters dry? Thought about putting them in plastic bins, but if they get damp prior to going in bin that won't keep them dry? Any suggestions?

Ahhh I like the idea of the trailer, just for the bikes! My six are 6 bike riders too many! About the comforters, if they are damp from humidity, how bout taking them to the dryers, bagging them up before boxing?
Don't really know. Humidity in Aug is hard to escape! And being cold is usually welcome

We tent camped in August at the Fort 4 years and we would do it again if it was not for our 2 and 3 year old and there health issues. Remember a fan, and you can not lay around in the tent in the am, you have to be out and ready to hit the day early or the tent will heat up. Use the comfort station to put on your sunscreen or you will be a sweaty mess. You can nap in the afternoons as long as the fan is on and if you are able put a tarp at an angle up over your tent hanging from trees if possible as it will keep you a little more shaded and it will keep the ran off. Disney has awesome sites where when it rains the rain does not keep the ground wet, the crushed shells (or whatever it is soaks up the rain) so you do not need a tarp underneath your tent.
And just remember when you are setting up it will be hot, get through it and then go jump in the pool!
