A good ham, the kind you bake. Not the totally pre-processed kind.
Not HoneyBaked.

My favorite Go-to ham for holidays has changed. It isn't as good. It even has fake smoke flavoring added.

For those in the South, I used to always get the FoodCity Premium semi-boneless ham. They were SO good. But, I noticed last time that they have changed.

Can anybody here recommend something as good as the FoodCity Premium hams used to be?

We usually get a Smithfield spiral sliced ham. My Mom and other family up North buy Coronado hams, but I have never seen them here in FL.

I always buy Cooks brand. I get the "butt" not the "shank". This is not a spiral cut type ham, it's a regular one.

I make a glaze of butter, brown sugar, orange juice and pineapple juice, I stick lots of cloves in the ham and put sliced pineapple on it with toothpicks, then pour the glaze over it and bake, 325 for about 20 minutes per pound. I spoon the glaze over it about every 20 minutes. It comes out nice and moist that way.

This is what I buy as well.

My glaze is just plain pineapple juice and brown sugar though. It makes it a little crispy on the outside like the Honey Baked company.

I get a plain Smithfield ham, no spiral sliced, which I find dry. And I don't like honey glazed. I make a paste of brown sugar and a small amount of white vinegar. I make cross cuts in the fat and stud the ham with whole cloves. Pat the brown sugar/vinegar paste on it and let it bake. The vinegar keeps the paste from being too sweet, with just the right amount of tanginess. Periodically I paste the ham with the drippings. My kids LOVE this ham. If they knew it had vinegar in it, they prolly wouldn't eat it. :goodvibes So I call it my "secret ingredient."

Not HoneyBaked.

i pick Honeybaked anyway

Sorry, before I read your post (just the question in title) my answer was already Honey Baked Ham. :) They are our absolute favorite hands down! Expensive as all get outs though!

For those of you that DO like honeybaked here is a recipe:

And here is my review with the changes I made

Came out great! I used an 8lb spiral cut ham. I used 1 stick of butter, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, and 1 cup of honey and just a few cloves for the glaze based on previous reviews. I used most of it, but kept a little for the end. I used an oven bag and flipped it over every 15-20 minutes to baste, it ended up breaking towards the end. At the end I took off the bag, brushed with a little more glaze I had not used, and put some brown sugar all over the ham, then broiled it on low for about 3 minutes for the crispy sugar layer the fancy pre-made hams come with. Watch the broiler it crisps fast. I followed the cooking instructions from the ham since it was precooked spiral cut, and cooked it on 275 for 10 minutes per lb to prevent drying out and it came out juicy and delicious. I served with cheesy potatoes and honey & brown sugar carrots cooked in the glaze.

We had a Paula Deen Smithfield for Christmas and I'm going for one for Easter. It was go-od!

Carando Spiral Cut is fantastic. It is so much better than Honey baked and so much less expensive not that that is a factor to me. Just one question...how does the Honeybaked Ham Store stay in business? I mean I never see anyone in there except for Christmas and Easter.

Good question! Ours went out of business years ago. That's probably why they are so dang expensive, so they can pay the rent the rest of the year.

I buy a Cooks ham as well. I don't make my own glaze I use Boar's Head Brown Sugar & Spice Ham Glaze. It's really good. I also stud my ham with cloves.

My favorite is the Kirkland brand spiral cut ham (sold with a glaze packet) from Costco. So tasty and spiral cut is so easy for feeding a crowd.

Thanks everyone!
I will look at Cook's, if I can find them here.

Def. don't want a Honeyglazed...
And, anything at all Smithfield, I wouldn't even try.

My MIL has mentioned that she has a turkey breast...
But, I STILL want to know where to find a great ham like my favorite used to be!!!

They have several stores in our area and do just fine. Everyone here loves them and a lot of people stop in for lunch and get sandwiches. They are almost always busy around lunch and dinner time, and of course on the holidays and all of Dec. they set up an extra tent to be able to handle the crowds. It's a favorite at that time for parties, then in the summer for receptions, etc. We don't buy any other kind of ham.

Honestly, I buy the store brand- the cheapest one usually. I trim the fat after it has been cooked and slice it very very thin. I have never been steered wrong by this method! :)
