Please tell me a little about Gty bookings

I know that you do not select your cabin, that it is assigned as you get closer to sailing. That is about the extent of what I do know about Gty bookings. If I book a Cat 8A, does that mean I am guaranteed at least an 8A and nothing lower, not an 8B, or 8C or could you get anything in a category 8? Is there anything else I might want to know before I book this and pay the deposit? TIA for any help.

With an 8A GTY booking, you are guaranteed at least an 8A category stateroom - possibly higher, never lower, and likely that level. It is not a discounted rate like the *GT rates. Categories go into "GTY" offering once a certain number or % of those staterooms have booked; it's DCL's way of keeping the inventory open while also allowing them the flexibility to make adjustments. With a GTY you are essentially allowing DCL to choose your stateroom at that level or above. You are also allowed to make changes and upgrades, which are not allowed on the *GT rates.

Enjoy your cruise!

Iff you don't like what you are assigned, what are your options about trying to make a change?

You can certainly upgrade (for $), or I think you can request a change but keep in mind there may not be any more staterooms of that category level available since GTY is offered because most rooms have already been assigned.

If you booked a Cat 8A, you will like what you're assigned ;-)
But a GTY booking is just like a booking with an assigned stateroom, except you don't know which stateroom you'll actually get.

I thought that sometimes you were upgraded to a higher category, is that not the case, you get the category that you booked?

Sometimes you are upgraded but not always. We have had 3 upgrades within the category (11c to 11a, 8d to 8b) and once where we got our 5a. Never been upgraded to a new category though.

Check out this link to a thread that explains it very well. It is also a sticky at the top of the forum.

I've booked 8A GTY twice and gotten an 8A both times. That's the extent of my personal experience.

I went ahead and booked the 8A Gty today, so this will be interesting. We normally book 5As, so this will be a real change for us, but it will only be for a 3-nighter.

When I first looked this morning, 8a was showing up as GTY. When I went to book it was no longer available, so I decided that was a sign no to go. Later on 8a showed up again. I did book it, and now it is no longer showing as available. Does mean that I probably got the last 8a cabin?

That's the likely scenario, yes. There's only a small number of 8As (12, I think) and they are very popular rooms. The good news is, I don't think there's a bad one in the bunch!
