How much luggage?

Hi! We are a family of 3 going on our first Florida/Disney trip later this Spring (my son's Wish Trip)! As you can imagine...we're all very excited! I am very much a planner, so I've been reading these boards a lot. First question....how much luggage do you think we will need? Our trip is for one week. We've never been gone this long before or been this far away before (we're from Michigan), so I am clueless. And we also have no luggage, so we'll buying or borrowing some! It will be me, my husband, and son who is 12. The wish foundation has told us we were allowed one checked bag per person that they would cover and one carry on per person, so no worry about bag check fees. (We just need to make sure we can carry it all ourselves) Any ideas...what do you all take?

Thanks!
Becky

I guess that all depends on how long your trip is for and how much stuff you think you will need?

My wife and I went for a week about 5 years ago and got away with just 1 medium sized suitcase and 2 cary-ons. Most of her stuff filled the med size case, with some of my stuff in there. Then the rest went in the cary-ons.

Since you are going on a WISH Trip, I would suggest going over to the disABILITIES Forum (the second one just below this one on the list). One of the first threads is a sticky concerning WISH Trips and GKTW Village.

One common suggestion there is to bring an empty suitcase along, as what is given to you at GKTW will fill a suitcase.

Duffle bags are a great alternative to suitcases they are less expensive to buy and they can be folded inside each other so it's easy to bring an extra bag. Otherwise check your local thrift store I have seen lots of luggage there just be sure you give the luggage at thrift stores a good sniff to be sure they don't have damp basement smell. For new luggage check Kohls and TJ max Borrowing luggage is nice but I have had many suitcases broken or generally battered after flights so I would be leery about borrowing.

Watch the weight of your bags wear the heaviest shoes you are bringing spread out the heavy items or put them together in the smallest case. I always pack my Shampoo conditioner sunscreen etc in together in one leak proof bag so I put them in the smallest bag so I can't add lots of other things with them.

Always carry on your chargers and anything you really need. You should also carryon a swimsuit toothbrush and such if you are not willing to buy new,I don't like to carry on too much so I never bring anything I'm willing to buy.

If you need any medical devices a lot of airlines will check them for free so check with whichever one you are flying.

Hi, congrats on your upcoming trip I dont have any experience with the wish, But I am a mich native who moved here a few yrs ago!

Im gonna give you my experience feel free to pm me any other questions I say pm cause I don't always get back to the same board/ thead often and fast!

We used to fly out of Flint into Orlando! its easy to get here Flint is a super small airport easy to manage! If DTW I cant help ya!

as far as amount of luggage that depends on you I planned on this!

I got the biggest I could find that was within the airlines allowed size for each person. leave extra room for return trip.
carry on was also the largest allowed and I put bathing suit, camera, meds and paperwork in there saving room for breakables on way home!

if you find you have too much on way home you can always maily back your didrty clothes!! wont be warm enough for em anyway for 2 more months!

While I'm all for shopping in thrift stores, I wouldn't recommend buying luggage at one. There's a possibility of bedbugs. Yuck.

I would recommend getting luggage at a store like Ross, TJ Maxx, Marshalls or Big Lots. They usually have great prices!

I hope you have a magical trip!!

When I was younger and flew(for holidays) I took a nesting set of luggage.

One person takes a regular bag

Second person takes a bag inside a bag and fills just the inner one

Third person takes a duffel bag thats small enough to be carry on.

This is the flight out.

On flight home

Two people take regular bags

Third bag is for stuff bought there and to cushion it fill with clothes.

Any remainder of clothes go in duffel as carry on

I'd also take a back pack which is sally not counted as carry on for snacks and stuff to do.
