Bed bugs at BWV

Just a heads up to anyone planning on staying at BWV, we had a room with a confirmed (by Disney pest control) bed bug infestation. It was in an accessible room on the first floor, I wish I could remember the room number but we were moved and it was the third resort we stayed at this trip.

We were pleased with the way it was handled IN DISNEY, and have taken every precaution we can think of now that we are home to prevent an infestation here, but should we require treatment, Disney's claims department will surely be hearing from us.

Bed bugs are a huge problem to which Disney isn't immune. They are required to inspect each room every 30 days apparently. I don't blame Disney, but I do know we didn't have any bugs before we left home. Just be diligent in inspecting your room prior to bringing your luggage in. Don't be naive to think because it's Disney, you're in the clear.

I'm guessing you must have experienced bites? Did you actually see them, and where did you look? I usually flip up the mattress and check, but I'm usually pretty casual about it. Just wondering how you found them...besides bites. I really hope you're okay at home...what a pain!

I actually saw a bug. We kept it under a glass until pest control could look at it. It crawled across my pillow. I didn't have any bites but I wasn't about to hang around to get any, either.

I just returned from 10 days at BWV on Friday and didn't have any issues in my room - but it's a very spread out resort as we are all well aware. Sorry that the OP had to deal with them. That is why I always go get the room key, go check out the room well (including a thorough bed bug check) and THEN go get the luggage. It's true that it can happen anywhere, and does, so you should always check for bedbugs first thing and if you have to bring any luggage in with you on that initial trip, place it in the bathroom until you have cleared the room. If you fly or leave your bags with bell services, you should thoroughly inspect your bags and contents when you receive them as the bugs can spread from suitcase to suitcase during travel as well (another reason I'm glad I drive ).

I definitely learned my lesson. I'm pretty diligent about checking when staying elsewhere (especially NYC), but I always had a "it's Disney, they don't have bed bugs" attitude. Yeah, well, now I know...

It's not just me, either. Since this happened, I've been scouring the Internet trying to find out how likely it is we will now find them at home. I actually came across a bed bug exterminator who slept in his room at BCV without checking the room and then found BB evidence after the fact. Even the most cautious of us assume Disney is a problem-free zone.

So if you take anything from this post, check the room before you bring your things in!

We had them at pofq last August. Yes it was confirmed by disney past control. Dd had little bites all over her arm. We did not see them. Practically ruined our vacation. Needless to say since then we have been vigilant about checking to see if there are bed bugs in every hotel we have been in since.

I always pull back the corners of the sheets and mattress pad and check there, specifically in the seams of the corners. I also lift up the mattress and check behind the headboard. You are basically looking for a small reddish-black bug or shells of the bugs that have been left behind.

We were in a handicapped accessible studio with a boardwalk view. To be perfectly honest, my husband remarked when we checked in that he didn't think the room was up to Disney's typical standards. The caulking was messed up in the bathroom and there was a gap between the sink and the wall. He said he didn't feel like it was as nice as rooms we have been in in the past, even at the BW (we've stayed there at least five times before with no issues). We had extended our vacation at the last minute and this was the only room we could get, so we weren't about to complain...until we saw the bed bug.

As far as checking your room for them, there's a ton of resources online which have tips and photos of the bugs in the different life stages (YUCK!). The important things are inspecting the seams and tags on the mattress and around the box spring using a flashlight. Look behind the headboard and nightstand, any fixtures near the bed. You're looking for bugs, their carcasses and small blood stains (from people getting bit and also the bugs' fecal stains). Don't ever put your bags on the bed, use the folding luggage rack or keep your bags in the bathroom.

At the BWV, you can look up under the headboard. Most of the time, they are actually mounted to the wall but you can see under them.

And thanks, I'm freaked about getting them at home. It's true that most of the affects are psychological!

If they were at the BWV, undoubtedly, Disney has gotten rid of them in that villa and checked the neighboring villas. They usually hitchhike in with the guests' luggage, computers or other stuff brought in by the guests. You never think of Magical Express as ME for Bedbugs.

At Home Depot, they sell a product from the BuggyBeds brand that help early detection of these nasty critters that you can place in your luggage so you can know EARLY if you have some hitchhiking on your belongings. Even if you bring one bug home, that's enough for a future infestation. Instead, that bug will be dead in the lure in your luggage! For those who are paranoid about these guys like I am, it's something to help relieve the paranoia.

Can you post more info on this product? What section of Home Depot is it? About how much does it cost? Just one in a package for one piece of luggage? or several? VERY INTERESTED in learning more about this....THANK YOU for the information

Just FYI. I saw your post and immediately went to buy some from amazon. But after reading the various reviews from people who KNEW they had bed bugs and saw the bugs walking by the traps, I think I'll save my $. Just thought I'd pass along the info. I'm totally paranoid!

What's stopping the bedbugs from hopping into your overhead carry-ons on the airplane?
