Sell DVC to purchase at dif resort

Hi all!

Has anyone sold their existing DVC membership to purchase at a different resort? We own 100 points at BLT and while the rooms are nice, we didn't love the location, we'd much much much rather be at BWV (we got married there so it holds a special place in our hearts). I want both more points and the ability to book 11 months out.

Has anyone done this? How did it work out for you? I will NOT use points to book cruises so I'm not worried about that.

Thanks!

Some people have. You'll just have to look at the economic cost.

If you go through a reseller, expect to pay about 10% commission from your sale price. If you have a loan on the purchase, you will have to satisfy that loan at closing. Depending upon how much you paid and how much you get, that could mean writing a check for a couple thousand dollars to settle the transfer.

BWV points are going for less than BLT so that will help. But BWV dues are higher and the contract ends sooner.

Better to correct your mistake and find a location you are happy with. But you'll have to run the numbers and make sure you can stomach the full cost.

We just sold 8 contracts to better align our holdings to our favorite resorts. Yes we took a loss but not knowing what Disney will do in the future made us make the change now. It also reduced our dues bill by a couple of thousand per year.

You'll take a loss and end up with points that have less intrinsic value than you own but it might be worth it. Remember you'll pay a commission on the sale plus closing on the purchase. I'd suggest doing an add on resale at BWV for 50-75 points instead.

This is something that I think about often. I contemplated becoming a member for over two years and posed numerous questions to countless guides throughout the resorts during that time. After much consideration, I decided that becoming a member was the right decision and purchased points at Animal Kingdom Villas. To date, I have taken 9 vacations, 7 of which have been at Animal Kingdom Villas. When booking, I always check the Walt Disney World website to calculate the value of my stay, after deducting the Florida Resident discount. The cash value of my trips to date exceeds $7,750. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoy my membership and use it well.

Although I love the resort, standard and savannah studios are always available and I truly wish I owned at a resort that gave me a real advantage. Switching is something I would also like to know more about.

I am in the process of doing that now. I am currently selling a SSR contract I purchased in 2010 with a Oct. UY we have another SSR contract with Aug UY and we felt we did not want that many points at SSR especially with the 2 different UY's, kind of a pain to use together at the 11 month window.

We are buying a midsize BWV contract since we really love the location along with BLT our other home resort. I think we will have the best of both worlds now! We did not take a loss on the SSR points which is rare (and we were willing to take a loss) we got a great deal in 2010 and rented the banked points out which we used to help pay for the purchase. SSR prices have come up a bit since 2010 which also helped.

If you sell BLT you will take a loss how much of a loss depends on when you bought in at what price. BWV will certainly cost you less so maybe it will be worth it to you.

Good luck

Good luck

Yes. I sold a small VWL contract to buy more BLT. Then, when we decided we wanted to own BWV, I couldn't find a 100 point contact so I sold a small BLT 30 point contract and bought 150 at BWV. It was worth it to me so that I could own what I wanted.

Of course, I am now in the process of buying another 100 points at BLT..lol

The way I see it, you have a 100 BLT contract worth about 8,000 after costs, and you want a BWV contract. You can get a 150 pt BWV contract
for around 9,000 after MF and closing. So for around 1,000 more you get 50 more points. ( Note: a 100 BWV point contract are harder to come by then a 150 pt).
Now for the pluses:
You have a resort you like better.
You have a much better chance to get standard rooms at BWV if you like that option.
You have a better chance to book during F W festival.
The MF are higher but the point usage level is lower (this is a wash).
The negatives:
The expiration date is 18 yrs shorter.
You will be paying more MF.
If you decide to do this you may be a homeless DVC owner for 6-8 months.

While I agree in principle, I think the numbers are a little off. After commission it's likely they'd have around $7500 after the sale and BWV 150 is likely to be closer to $9500 with closing. I think the difference here is more in the $2K range. The point about the cheaper fees is important in this situation far more so than in the purchase decision for BLT and so are the standard view room options. The other issue is that even though the dollar difference OOP is not that large, when you look at the ongoing relative value, it's still a pretty big difference which is born out more if you compare to the 100 point BWV contract.

While BWV has one of the highest MF in the DVC system. It has the standard room pricing which when utilized makes BWV one of the best values in the DVC system. I see the expiration date as the difference here.
In the end it all comes down to what makes you happy!

If you ever decide to book either Club Level or a Value room, you will be glad you own points at AKV and can book 11 months out.

That assumes that the person desires the standard rooms for most trips. To me I see it as an aggregate of the issues. I think the best choice for most in this situation is to add additional points rather than to sell and buy something else, esp if they want more points anyway.
