Any federal employees facing a furlough?

Once again we have a deadlock over budget issues. My future sil is possibly going to receive one day a week off as a furlough. I don't know if this will be rescinded if they solve the problem before it takes affect or ends. I don't know if they will be given retroactive pay. Basically it seems there is not a lot of info out there. He is better of than some because his position is currently high needs so he will only be receiving a one day a week but it's a big pay cut. And he has been on a pay freeze for three years.

employees with more valuable skill sets or specialized training will likely go back into the private sector. And the DC metro area will be taking a huge hit. Imagine just cutting pay 20 percent.

Congress has the ability to "cancel" a sequestration after it has been triggered.

That's what I thought. They are planning and saving for a wedding. We are providing help toward this. Everything has been booked and contracts have been signed. This is going to create a financial hardship for them and for us as well. We will work hard to pick up the shortfall. I am hoping that it is averted. He has been considering going into private sector but has loyalty to his division and projects in place. He is in a field where he would have a good chance of finding another position that pays more. However, the current position offered more security for a young couple starting out. If we were allowed to be political I'd have a few more words to say on this subject.

As a CA state worker, we have not had a raise for 10 years, furloughed 3 days a month for 2 years and now furloughed 1 day a month. You learn to live on less or get a second job.

DH is a supervisor for the DoD. He is facing one day off per week for 22 weeks starting approx. mid April. A major financial hit, but we are careful with our money, so we'll survive. Our area is going to take a major hit, though. Many local businesses are bracing for a financial hit during the sequestration period.

We've discussed it a bit on the budget board. Certainly there are lots of us out there. My area will be highly hit with 12K people being furloughed. The DOD is the biggest employer here. Small businesses etc. will be highly affected.

DH and I have made plans about where we're going to make cuts. One of the things we talked about cutting is the local newspaper. I feel guilty knowing it will probably go under if very many of those affected do the same. But we've got to make cuts unless we want to devastate our emergency fund, so there it is. We also worry about our favorite restaurant etc.

There goes the already fragile recovery, methinks. That many people getting pay cuts, contractors being laid off, contracts for new equipment and such evaporating. . .well, it doesn't add up to anything good.

On a personal note, I'm not really looking forward to flying through Houston until this is resolved. Am also worried about VA services, food inspections, customs enforcement, law enforcement in the National Parks, schools that recieve federal funding, people waiting on tax refunds, etc.

So much of modern life depends on all folks in the federal government going about doing their jobs, and they do their jobs so well that I think we sometimes just don't realize how much in our day to day lives depends upon them. At least if it goes to sequester, we will all be aware of just how much we rely upon their work!

I feel like every time we almost hit a fiscal cliff the news stations were all "countdown to gov't shutdown" but I personally haven't seen much media this time around. I'm outside of the US now so maybe that's why, but I just don't see anyone talking about it, when it seems to be much more likely to go through versus the previous "shutdowns."

It's ramping up a bit here but not so much on the news. This actually won't be a typical "shutdown" which is probably why it's not getting much press. The government offices will be open 5 days a week, there will just be less staff manning the office.

It won't really hit the news until the general population gets affected.

I feel your pain . Our DSIL1 w/DoD is looking at 4 day work week for 22wks also. Thankfully they have some savings for ER's, but my heart goes out to the many gov. employees, contractors, and businesses, that will be affected.

Fed employee here - no RIFs or furloughs for us. Our CFO is brilliant and was able to make the cuts without affecting employees directly. Note that each agency has responsibility for finding the cuts. A lot of the threatened impacts are more politically motivated than anything. You get a lot more press and sympathy if you start cutting salaries and threatening jobs than if you start eliminating training and travel budgets.

I think it will be an interesting experiment. In reality, the cuts from sequestration are really only a drop in the bucket for what's needed. I think the vast majority of Americans on both sides of the aisle truly have no idea the reach and impact of the federal government. My hope is that it will be an eyeopener for everyone. My belief is that any lessons that should be learned will just get lost in more squabbling.
