Official 2013 Disney Princess Half Marathon Thread - Take 2

Thanks, ladies! Even just having 5K splits will be helpful. Just need to know how long I have to drink my mimosa. :thumbsup2

I've had random luck with runner tracking at other races, too. Hubby tried it for my last race, and didn't get any updates until we got home. By then, he had figured out that I had finished. ;)

Keep in mind the finish time prediction could be off due to crowding at the start.... my family just missed my finish at the DL half. They got the texts promptly, but the predicted finish time was way off because my first 5K was very slow (I had never run in a race with more than 150 participants! The weaving and stop and go really threw me off.) If you check the last split time and add the on the quickest you think he could run from there, it might be more accurate than the predictor.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard there are CMs there with the characters that are more than happy to take pictures for you.

I'm on the fence about taking a camera/iPhone. I won't stop for characters, but would like to take some "drive-by" photos. Then again, I think it might drive me crazy to try to run holding something. I don't want to be tempted to chuck my phone at mile 7! Any thoughts on running with a phone/camera?

Whoa... So if these are the breakdowns for the Disney Races, why is the Princess SO much larger? I'm going off the reported 26,000 bib numbers (or even just the reported 101-20,000+ here).

Now I'm getting worried about being trampled! Any veteran that can speak to this?

Gets bigger and more expensive every year...and sells out faster than the year before. I think it's gonna be pretty crowded. We were talking about it this AM. At some point it's just not gonna be fun anymore...I'm afraid it's gonna get so big that the whole course gets congested and lines for pics are just going to be too long for slower runners to be able to wait for...I know they are enjoying the $$ it's bringing in, but I hope it doesn't end up ruining the experience for the runners in the future.

With just over 2 weeks until I leave, I've got my 5K costume put together. Just have to wait for it all to arrive.

Bib #17574 here! Hello to my back of the packers!!!

Question for you PHM veterans - Where are good spots for your family to see you and how do you get from place to place? I need to give DH specific instructions or he will get frustrated. Hoping they can see me in MK and then again at the end/finish line. Anything that gives him step by step instructions would be helpful. He will have our 6 year old (and my mom). Of course, our DD will want to know why she can't ride any rides (or maybe they can?).

Thanks!!

The park isn't open yet, so no rides. They allow the spectators to come onto Main Street and watch, that's all.

I found this blog by a husband really helpful in terms of planning to watch and sent it to my DH to assist him in planning:

Oh, and Cripey, I forgot to say thank you for directing me to the turkey chili recipe yesterday. I think your modifications to it sound great! (I love sour cream, and if turkey is too lean, it is dry and flavorless.) I'm going to try making it your way.

I can't stand running with anything strapped to my body - I'm really not keen on the running belts & arm bands for phones/ipods (I don't even like to wear a watch!), but I am sort of type A when it comes to tracking my time & distance with a GPS tracker. I have a weightlifting glove that I tuck my phone into and just hold it while I run. I honestly don't even notice it's there anymore - but that's also what people say about the belts/arm bands that I dislike so much too :laughing: I would try taking your phone or camera with you on a training run and see how you like carrying it. I use the glove to protect my phone from falls and my sweaty hands. It has an otterbox on it, but still...I'm clumsy.

I ran with my camera for the Tink and didn't mind at all. I did have space for it in my pack, but found it was easier to just keep it in my hand for those "drive-by" pics:) We also got pics at each mile marker -- except 3 which we somehow missed:confused3 Of course, I am a slower run/walker so it might make a difference for someone who is faster...

I feel the same way. We were planning to stop for some character pics at Tink, but the lines were so long that the only one we got was Lightning and Mater -- and that one never even made it to the "official" photographs. Luckily, we had them snap one with my camera too. I can only imagine what it will be like with this one considering there are twice as many runners! After this year, I only have WDW Marathon weekend (half, full and Goofy) and the Wine & Dine left to try. Hoping to hit both of them in 2014, then will probably take time off from Disney races for awhile.

I also hope that Marathon Photo does a better job with the Princess photos. I thought they were horrible at Tink -- for us, there were no character photos (of course, we only did the one), no castle photos and no high-fiving Minnie just before the finish photos. They did get me crossing the finish line and a couple on the streets of Anaheim, but nothing in the parks. And we made sure we were in the line of fire for every photog we saw because the one I really wanted was the castle:(

NATURALLY, waivers came out when I was nowhere near a computer for all of an afternoon and evening! :faint: But a fellow Princess looked me up and texted me the info :thumbsup2

I'm #73XX. I gather that'll be D, or maybe E? Totally happy with that, though I kinda wonder what the Track Shack folks have been smoking... I submitted no proof of time, and the only long race runDisney has on record for me was the TOT that I raced injured for a final avg pace of over 16:00. :confused3 I don't get it - but I'll take it! :rotfl:

My guess is that they'll stick with A-H corrals and raise the number of racers per corral to 3,000ish. That's a whole lotta Princesses per corral...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is going to sound weird but I think my feet are different. My right foot rubs against any arch (I'm in neutral shoes because stability cause all sorts of issues) but I think that the left foot might need more. Strange?:confused3
Mine are totally different - one overpronates some and the other tends to suppinate. I stick with neutral shoes and doctor them up to make them right: arch supports in both, some rolled-up (but flat) athletic tape under the insole of one in the heel and big toe.
I am extremely frugal and paying that much for a pair of shoes in the past would have been unheard of..now $59 is a cheap pair..and a good deal:confused: . :rotfl:)
Right?! :rotfl2:
I said "just look for the yellow tutu"...but I don't suppose that's really going to set me apart now is it? lol :)
Hee hee, maybe not! I have this vision of your BF running up to every yellow-tutu'd Princess, yelling your name!
Did anyone get a cool number?
Not even remotely - I can't even remember mine, it's so obtuse! Had to write it on a sticky note...
Okay completely off topic but considering how many people here are costume wearers I am hoping someone may be able to point me in a hopeful direction. I am looking to get a Star Trek costume but as I have discovered apparently no one has informed the costume makers yet that not all female Trekkies fit a size medium or smaller. Anyone know where I can possibly find a red or blue dress that can be modified into a costume? I would love you!
Oh, I've been pondering this, too, in anticipation of the Space Coast! I've been thinking of a Team Sprakle skirt with tech shirt in the same color and adding the black elements and insignia myself... somehow...
Hooray for my costume!!!!
I can't decide, either, for exactly the same reasons. I ran with it in the TOT 10-Miler and hated it every second; was very close to ditching my camera by Mile 8. But will I be sad not to have it in this, a daytime race? IDK.
At some point it's just not gonna be fun anymore...I'm afraid it's gonna get so big that the whole course gets congested and lines for pics are just going to be too long for slower runners to be able to wait for...I know they are enjoying the $$ it's bringing in, but I hope it doesn't end up ruining the experience or the runners in the future.
ITA, and TBH, I don't know if I'll do many more Disney races for that reason. Huge crowds are not fun for me, under any conditions, and we have some really nice races nearby that are much less crowded and MUCH less expensive.
you're welcome :) I use light sour cream rather than the fat free (I can't remember if I mentioned that before)...to me fat free is just :eek: Hope you like it!
LOL, as I read this I had a thought of him running up to a yellow tutu'd princess and giving her a little "yay I found you!" love pat on the behind (he's done this on a training run before, scared the crap out of me and almost got punched!)...we better think of a better signal...I don't want him to end up at the medical tent after getting the smackdown by an unsuspecting Belle :)
Literally same with DH! His only time with Disney was ToT where he walked with me 8 of 10 miles (we ran mile 1 and mile 6) and we were some of the last finishers! But he'll happily take Corral D! Good luck Princess!!!!!
I agree that the rules are that way, it is the same here in Canada. Elite is based on a race qualifying time, and most races have different race qualifying times for elite.
I was never surprised with my number or anything, I knew my time would place me very high and RD didn't screw up, however, all I wanted to know is if anyone knew anything about elites...but instead, you know lol
I am gunna call and ask later today what will put me there.
Thanks for the friendly response
You are so welcome ;-) Let us know what they said.
The design on the dress is the same one I'm making for my DD to wear during Star Wars Weekends :) We just got her a dress yesterday from Wet Seal. Love the gloves, where did you get those?
Try this
keep in mind that you may need to add time based on what corral you start.
I think I might be in B this year! Cool :) I'm injured so I think I will start in the back of the corral.
Friends of ours are a team and have a 30,800something bib number. Not sure what to tell them as far as what corral they are in. Looking forward to when they release the corral info!
Anyone staying at VWL??
I run with my Iphone...for my music, my Runkeeper, camera, etc. I put it either in a SPI belt or the ultimate easy storage answer...a Sparkle Skirt. Has a huge zippered pocket in the front waistband - large enough to easily fit the Iphone in an Otterbox or in any of the two huge,stretchy side thigh pockets of the compression shorts. Can't beat them. (No, I don't work for them!)
Very cool, but please don't try to run in a mask. Not only is it dangerous, it is not allowed on the course. Otherwise, best costume ever!!
That was good. This is my favorite line:
"Trying to spot a woman in a pink shirt when there are literally thousands of women passing in pink shirts proved to be stressful" :lmao:
Yes, Disney will put out a run tracking option, but the tracking is only in 5K splits- not by miles. So you would get 5K, 10K and 15K splits- but not notification that he was at mile 12 or 13 so you can get to finish to see him.
I think there is an iphone or possibly runtracker or some app you can use to track someone. I have NO idea the name but maybe google and see what you can find. Pretty sure I remember someone in past years talking about setting their husbands phone up at home to track her as she ran- and it wasn't through the Disney provided runtracker.
Maybe it was "find my phone" even? Not sure if it was something that basic or not!
I have my iphone and my ipad linked up. I'm planning having my phone strapped to my arm so I can use my running app and giving DH my ipad so that he can track exactly where I am on he map with the "Find my iphone" function.
I think this is going to be a lot more helpful to him as he'll be dragging my sleepy kids along with him and it would be sad if they missed me.
