I am going to the doc tomorrow but was just wondering if anyone has experienced this. I get dizzy when I lay my head down at night to go to sleep and also has been happening if I bend my head over and look down. It only lasts for a few seconds.

Im not having this right now but I was having it happen alot about a month ago. I had gotten over the flu so maybe fluid I dont know. It went away though on its own thankfully. After so many times of getting unnecessary testing I avoid the dr if I can. I once spend 5 days in cardiac intensive care with all these invasive procedures and mega radiation for absolutely no reason, I was pronounced "fine" and discharged:confused3

Might be Benign Positional Vertigo. I just got diagnosed with it a couple of months ago. It won't hurt to have your doctor check it out.

thank you all for your thoughts of what it could be. I really do not want to face getting alot of tests but this isn't normal and it's been happening for about 3 weeks.

I don't know if it could be an inner ear infection, I don't have any pain.

if it's BPV, that means there are crystals loose in your inner ear that are floating around. My DFiL had it and he went to a physical therapist that specialized in vertigo and it was gone in 2 sessions. They move your head around to get the crystals to float back where they belong.

My DH actually has meniere's and it's not as easy as BPV. He has constant fluid build-up in his inner ear, and takes medicine (water pill) everyday.

Sounds like positional vertigo to me. I get it, too, sometimes. I find that if I am congested/have fluid in my ears, it's worse. I tried to have them shift the crystals but having my head rotated like that made the vertigo so bad I passed out. I just make sure I don't position my head in ways that will trigger the vertigo and I'm OK.

I agree with PPs on BPV. My DM was just treated for diagnosed and treated recently and I didn't realize just how common it is. Treatment is very simple - I watched the Dr as he positioned her head at different angles while she layed at an incline. Took no more than 10 minutes, then was told to sleep in a some what up-right position for 48 hours and not bend over for 2 weeks. Believe it or not it worked! We were so worried it was something serious because she was quite dizzy for weeks and had no other symptoms. Best of luck to you.

I had that before. Drove me crazy because the spinning would wake me every time I rolled over in my sleep. I took over the counter sea sick medicine which got rid of the symptoms until the exercises worked. You can google vertigo and find websites That show how to get rid of it.

thank you everyone for your thoughts that it could be vertigo.....that helps me calm down tonight to think it may be that. I will update tomorrow after I see the doc.

I had the same symptoms a few years ago and the doctor diagnosed positional vertigo. She prescribed Meclizine, the active ingredient in Bonine (over-the-counter med. for motion sickness). I still get it once in a while and keep some Bonine in the medicine cabinet just in case.

doctor said I have inner ear - vertigo. Could be leftover symptom from my upper respiratory infection I had in December. She had the nurse irrigate my ears and said that should help. Call in a week and let her know if I'm still getting dizzy.

I was gonna say this sounds exactly like my benign positional vertigo. I have experienced it off and on for years. Seems scary while happening but it's harmless.

What did they do for you? Sorry you have this vertigo.

They prescribed me Meclizine and also gave me a shot for the vomiting (I was really getting knocked for a loop.) After that I did some research and found a couple of videos posted by a Michigan University on YouTube that showed how to position your head to help relieve the symptoms.

Mine seemed to come on slowly over the course of a couple of months and then one day, wham! I'm on the floor, the walls were spinning. I couldn't turn my head without vomiting. I slept on the floor because it was the only thing I knew for certain wasn't moving. The very next morning I was at the doctor's office. The doctor mentioned that it's very common to get it as we get older because of the crystals in the ear moving around. Coincidentally I've developed a secret hatred for those tiny crystals...

I haven't had an episode since November. I'm kinda hoping it's done and over with... *crosses fingers*

I clicked on this link because I'm dizzy now. I've had a cold for almost a week and today it feels like that time I drank too much and was hugging the floor so the world would stop spinning. I'm going to the doctor tomorrow.

In case anyone else clicks on this thread: I also get vertigo that is associated with my migraines. My neurologist told me that folks who get migraines and tend to get car or motion sick are likely to experience vertigo. My vertigo usually comes without the migraine pain, when I'm lying down. I haven't had a migraine or the associated vertigo in a while. *knock on wood*
