DH &I were in Costco yesterday. I walked by a man standing with his two young sons just in time to hear him say, "let's find the old ball &chain.". Pretty loud, too. And his very attractive wife was standing less than 10 ft away. She had to have heard him. I didn't say anything, but I was offended. How could he speak that way about his wife, especially in public AND in the presence of his boys? Nice going, Crap Dad, teaching your kids how to treat women.

If my DH talked about me like that ,it would be game on!

:rotfl: I don't see the problem. I'm sure he was just fooling around. My husband and I do that all the time. Our kids know that too. Hardly anything to get your panties in a bunch about. :rotfl:

What have things become that now even messing around with your loved ones in not PC anymore. :sad2: Some days I really weep for our future.

We have tons of "inside jokes" within the family.

If some outside observer eavesdrops and gets insulted, then so be it. It is none of their business.

OP - you have absolutely NO idea what context that comment was made in. If the wife was 10 feet away and was not upset, it obviously was something they kid about all the time. If she was not upset, why in the world would a random stranger get their blood pressure up enough to post it on a message board?

Or is there the proverbial more information to follow, like the wife scowled at the comment or something similar?

DH and I have all sorts of inside jokes. The old ball and chain line is so played out, I always figure it is tongue in cheek.

I don't think I have ever heard some one say "old ball and chain" to be disrespectful, only as a joke or in a kidding around way.

When my husband and I go to the grocery store the clerk will say "do you want a bag for that ?" And my husband will say " no thanks, I left her at home!" :rotfl2:He loves to see people's reactions. I think it is hilarious. I know he really doesn't feel that way about me!

Why would you be offended by that?? It's not like it was directed at you.
I am with someone 14 years older than me so I would hate for you to be in a store with some jokes that we say/call each other:lmao:

The fact that he did it loud and in public would make me think it was a joke.

I think you are over reacting! ::yes::

What they said!

LOL!! I would never even have thought of someone coming up with a joke like that!

My dh was a proverbial "Dick Clark". He had a baby face his entire life. He looked exactly the same at 58 as he did at 38. Use to drive me crazy, especially since I spend the equivalent of Bolivas GDP on Oil of Olay and other anti wrinkle cream.

I called him "the old guy" all the time. that was his nickname when I spoke of him on the dis.

I don't really see a problem with it either....I think it all depends on the relationship.

OP I agree that it may have been a joke but I totally get what you are saying. My DH jokes with me like that at times but in the privacy of our home. I would be really mad at him if he did it in public. There's a time and place for everything.

:thumbsup2 I'm convinced if the outside world heard 1/2 the things we say to each other in a very saracastic kidding way they would be mortified. However...now if a stranger came up to us and said the same thing -- would be totally offensive.

This reminds me of DD's ringtone for me! People get all upset with her because she has Ding Dong the Witch is Dead for my ringtone on her phone. I think it's hilarious!!! She tells me, people get all bent out of shape when it rings & she says "oh that's my mom calling".

oh lighten up. and why did you have to point out that she was attractive? so if she was ugly, you would have never written this thread?
