How sad and embarrassing for her and for them to say where she works at her firm. I hope she doesn't lose her job over this. It was probably a bench warrant - it's shocking how many people have these for fines and what not. In my county judges issue bench warrants for civil matters as well as criminal. Some people don't even know they have one out for them.

No, it doesn't. Most trip insurance policies that I've seen cover subpoenas and court orders to appear provided you are not involved in the litigation. I take this to mean that you are not, in essence, the defendant.

In another lifetime I practiced law and I've wondered whether trip insurance will cover my trip cancellation if I were summoned to court for one reason or another. I guess I should have bought "cancel for any work reason" coverage...

I'm happy that they were checking the list of passengers for terrorist ties and whatnot, but 22 years ago? Do our officers have nothing better going on right now? Wow!

FWIW, I'm throwing this out here, if you have an old record of almost any kind (including a DUI from 25 years ago), it's possible that Canada will not allow you entrance. Be aware of this, if you planning an Alaskan (or other Canada) cruise.

You have to apply for rehabilation status with Canada. If eligible, it can take 6 months to a year to receive. Or you can get it faster for a lot more money.

This is not something new. All passports are checked as you leave the country, and if anything is found, they mark your record and you are detained coming back into the country because they do make sure you are the one they are looking for.

Bench warrants usually don't even say why you are wanted, just that a certain city,county or state wants a 'hold' on you. It might not be for a crime, but for a failure to show up for jury duty or outstanding parking tickets, failure to complete (or get the proper release) from community service. This case is not because she stole the cigarettes, but because she didn't pay the fine.

It will now cost her a whole lot more than $85.

Seriously? This made your day? Besides the fact that this is a total waste of resources, what part of a mother of 2 being locked up in county jail is amusing to you -- over $85 and some stupid jurisdictional issue of her not being ALLOWED to post bail?

That is so crazy, though. As for police checking after the cruise, I would believe that the actual cross-checking of Passport information doesn't happen until disembarkation anyway--when you're going through customs. You don't go through customs to board the ship. But on the other hand, doesn't the cruise line have to present the passenger roster at some point in advance? Confused on the timeline here.

WOW!!!! To many bleeding hearts. Some comments to the point but none direct on the point. She admitted stealing, no matter how long ago, then has made good since without setteling her debt. So sadly as most posts demonstrate using their logic.......I make a charge on board with KTTW I shouldnt be held responsible and if I am and come back 22 years later Disney should not try to collect.

The sad part is that no one recognise the fact that she set the ball in motion by commiting the crime in the 1st place.

Personally I have made bad choices in the past, BUT was required to make good for or how what ever reason to settle them.....not ignore them and hope they go away. She knew what was happening. So many ppl lie to make the situation suit there needs.

If she does not deny the crime then the consequences are of her own accord. There are set procedures in place for this. She is just upset that the "system" caught up to her.

I am personally glad that @ no matter what point someone in the US is doing their job!!!

Sure, she should have a consequence for stealing, but this is extreme. As someone else mentioned, they could have informed her and allowed her to pay a fine. 22 years later and to be in jail for a few days does not seem to fit this crime.
