OK.. I know its probably more a depends on how my training is going answer, but here goes.. I am shooting for goofy in 2014... using the galloway training method.. It just so happens that the Columbus marathon is on a weekend where I am supposed to do a 7 miles walk on saturday and a 17 mile run on sunday... So, the question I have, I am for sure wanting to do the 1/2 marathon just to have a longer race under my belt.. but looking at that weekend, should I consider just doing the marathon on sunday, and skipping the 7 mile walk on saturday? I would LOVE to do the marathon, again, just to have a long distance under my belt.. And again I know it is far in the future, but just wanted to get some thoughts.

did you mean for this to be posted on the Events subforum? i think so and i'm going to move it, if not just PM me and i'll move it back....

I ran the cols marathon this past fall on the same weekend I was supposed to run 17 on the Galloway plan. I only ran the HALF marathon that day.

I suggest you run the 7 on Saturday and the 13.1 in Sunday. Likely the race effort will be more than 13.1 training miles. Then just get back on your Galloway plan the next weekend.

Also consider modifying Galloway plan a little. Because of various circumstances, I ended up only getting in two 17 mile runs and one 20 mile run. And I was able to complete my first marathon under pace. From my personal experience, I don't think it is necessary to go up to 26 miles on the Galloway plan. In fact I would not recommend it at all. I think if you got in a 20 and a second 20 or 22 mile run that would be fine.

Thanks, that makes perfect sense about the training miles vs race miles.. I just keep thinking I would like to do a marathon distance before the WDW just to have it under my belt. I guess I still could if I didnt modify the plan..

Guess I can wait and see how training in going then decide which to run.

Why not train for the Columbus marathon first and then pick up with your Goofy training after that? Swapping in a half marathon race for a long training run usually presents no problems, but running a marathon when you're not trained for it increases your risk of injury.

heh... glad it wasnt a snake :) guess that is the most obvious answer...:rotfl2::thumbsup2

i did the goofy last weekend, and i made it through with no injury, no major pains, etc. i credit most all of it to sticking with the galloway training plan.
#1 - do not skip the 7 mile walk.
#2a - if you are already registered for the marathon, use the first 17 miles as long training run. i wouldn't put too much effort after that.
#2b - if you are not registered, don't bother. you need the time and training at the shorter distances to figure out food/gel/water intake and gradually ramp up to the distances in the training guide.

it's also about conditioning your body/muscles to the distance gradually.
I had the wine and dine half on a night before I was supposed to to 20 miles, so i did an easy 7 mile run as soon as i woke up the next day.

do whatever you want, but my vote is to stay with the galloway plan.

I would say do what you want. Quite frankly the Galloway plan does not build any other races into it. I finished goofy after doing Honolulu marathon five weeks before and felt better than I did after the marathon. I choose to run the half and walk the full with friends though. Choose what you want to do ahead of time then work your training plan around that. I hope this helps.

I train with a Galloway group and I did a full marathon on November 10th because that was the timeframe that our fall schedule targeted. I had the opportunity to ask Jeff how to maintain for Goofy 8 weeks later, and he suggested that after the marathon I keep up long runs every 3 weeks and add a couple of back-to-backs. The longest back-to-back I did was 8 and 16 miles (I ran/walked both) and I did fine last weekend for Goofy.

If you feel like you'd like to get the distance under your belt before you actually run a marathon definitely do it. It helped me so much for my first marathon - definitely more mentally than physically, but the week before the race I was so nervous and it was very calming to know I had done it in training.

Good luck!
