When did WDW start using refillable mugs?

Specifically who has one of the original refillable mugs? Who has an resort specific mug? From which resort and what year?

I don't know when the resort specific mugs started but I know they were there when we went to WDW for the first time in 2004. We have our Poly mugs from trip #1. For the next few resorts we have resort specific mugs. In June 2007 when we stayed at the GF, I was surprised when our mugs were not resort specific. They were white with Dark Blue Characters and Handle, marked 2007, they say Walt Disney World, Where Dreams Come True. Every year thereafter they have been non-resort specific. I really wanted a GF mug...

@ tinkermommyof3 We also noticed the same thing in 2007 with the white cup and dark blue handle with 2007 printed on it.

We gave quite a few, 47 trips we've accumulated quite a few, some early ones were forever mugs!

I had them from the CBR in 1994. Back then they were like plastic short coffee mugs, a nice blue color with the CBR logo and Mickey Mouse on it, and they left 4 of them in the room. They were there for your use of your stay and if you wanted to keep them they charged you $8 for them.

There was a little sign by the mugs on the dresser stating this. The maid service removed the dirty ones daily and brought new ones.

We have some of the very first mugs sold, but can't remember a year. I believe the first ones were lifetime refills. We have brought them in the past and none of the workers mention anything when we refill them. We just returned from WDW (didn't bring mugs) and noticed the new sign that says that mugs are for current stay only.

We have that one too! It was from our first stay on site at CBR. Our first wdw trip in 2003 we didn't stay on site.

We went in 1995 and had them, we were told they were resort specific, but we were told from friends who went that same year that they used their mug (same resort we had) at multiple resorts with no problem. This is our first trip back since 1995, so I take it from what I read it has gotten pickier and you can only use them at your specific resort?

I have a ridiculous number of mugs from 1994 on. I've donated or thrown out a lot of duplicates but kept one of each design. Most of them are resort specific mugs, since as a pp mention 2007 started the generic mugs. I have them from most of the resorts Poly, GF, CR, WL, CBR, CSR, Dixie Landings, Port Orleans before it was POFQ, PO Riverside, ASMo, ASMu, BWI, BC, AKL. I have different designs for many resorts, and different styles, such as the short plastic coffee cup ones in blue or pink from CBR (the only resort I know of that had that style), to the taller wider mugs, to the car cup holder styles offered now. I have clear with silver glitter mugs from 1997 stay at Poly I think, they say 25th anniversary. I try to get a Christmas mug with hot chocolate each year at HS and I have quite a few of those.

I don't remember when signs started going up saying mugs were good for length of stay. I know I have plenty from before there were signs, but we bought new mugs because we stayed some place new, there were new designs, etc. We didn't buy any mugs our last trip, I already have 8 of the current design, and we were planning only breakfast at our resort, so we just purchased our drinks. First trip without a mug! It felt weird, but a mug cost more than what I was going to spend on drinks and it was the same old design.

I wish they would go back to resort specific mugs!

You can only use the new mugs you purchase at the resort you bought them at (or sister resorts like POR and POFQ or the All Stars). The rules are written right on the mugs.

Yup! We have ones from the AllStars from 1998 and they were lifetime refillable!!

My first I the light blue glittery 25th anniversary mug with Cinderella coach logo from 1997. Lifetime refillable. Then we got a Flounder (from TLM) mug at CBR in 2000, then a 3 Cabelleros mug from CR in 2010. In 2011, we got our first generic style mug.

We got a resort specific mug from the Polynesian in 1997 and it was not a lifetime mug. There were signs posted over the stack of mugs stating Disney policy - unlimited refills for the length of the trip at that resort. We got a DVC specific refillable mug in 1998 that was not free refills, but $1 refills and not lifetime. We've also gotten resort specific mugs from GF, Wilderness Lodge, BC/YC, BW, PO (before it was POFQ), AK and none of them were refills for life.

My 1999 DxL's mug is resort specific, and it good forever, at DxL. Now, not sure if I can 'legally' take it back to POR and use it!!!! Also have resort specific ones from Pop, Boardwalk, the Polynesian and AllStar Music. None of those are lifetime refills though.
After having more than 30 of the darn things, I've pretty much stopped buying them. I really wish Disney would institute a program where I could bring mine back, pay a nominal charge and use it wherever I'm staying.
