WISH Away the Pounds--January 2013 challenge--Everyone Welcome!

QOTD: I don't really like vegetables so I stick with the ones that don't make me gag! I make a veggie stir fry with Olive oil. It has mushrooms, green and yellow peppers, onions, squash, zucchini. I use garlic, salt and rosemary to season.

Positive: So far I have been very relaxed about giving DH and kids partial control over our vacation plans! I don't need to plan every little detail and fill every minute with something to do.

My friend posted this on her Facebook page and thought I'd share it.

QOTD--Jan 3, 2013--What is your favorite non-traditional veggie? (Meaning other than: broccoli, green beans, peas, tomatoes.) Do you have a quick and easy way of preparing it that you'd like to share?

And you know it is coming---

Say something positive about yourself.
:)

I have another busy day coming up, but I will try to check in tomorrow evening.
Have a great Thursday! :)

Hmmmm, non-traditional veggie. Lima beans. I used to hate them as a kid because we would get them from a friend every time we saw them (owned and lima bean and apricot farm) but now we eat them all the time. I also like okra but they are usually dredged in flour and pan fried (not good for you).

Positive - I slept through the night!!!!!! :cool1:

Glad you slept, Buffy. Have you ever read "A Bad Case of Stripes" to your kids? Whenever somone says they like lima beans I always think of that book. So funny.

I am just lurking, not joining this time around. Feeling lazy, I suppose. Everybody just know that someone is cheering you on. I did not get up and do my 5:45 AM class, but did do my 7 AM walk, so wasn't totally lazy this morning!

QOTD: I eat a LOT of vegetables, so i probably consider most of them traditional (my husband disagrees but he's coming along)

Love greens - kale, spinach, turnip greens, Swiss chard, mustard greens, collards, dandelion. I add to soups

Love rutabaga and turnip - I slice it thin and roast it. I also use a a sub for potato in recipes

Cauliflower is pretty traditional, but I routinely use it to make pizza crust and garlic 'breadsticks" I don't even miss grains (much)

Cabbage - it's delicious quartered, sprinkled with minced garlic, a bit of bacon and a drizzle of Worchestershire and then baked

I avoid the really carb-heavy vegetables, but the only veg I truly dislike are brussel sprouts (weird because I do love cabbage), lima beans (and variations like fava beans as well) and peas

Positive for the day : I preplanned my options for going out to eat tonight (Ruth's Chris) and managed to squeeze in some creme brulee :woohoo:

I am angrycupcake12 on MFP... I also need friends!

Me too! I use MFP on my phone and the only options for adding friends is from phone contacts, email, or Facebook so how do I add people using a screen name?

I'm not sure how to do it on the phone. But send me your screenname and I can add you from my end.

Bnb0627 thanks and anyone else on here feel free to add me!

QOTD: my new favorite veggie is brussel sprouts. My mom made them one night when my DH and I went over for dinner and I fell in love with them. I have had them cooked many ways and they are alway delicious. My other favorite is spaghetti squash. It is so easy to make and you put a little pasta sauce on it and it tastes amazing.

Something positive, yesterday I had a rough day at work and instead on drowning my sorrows in food I decided to relax and read a book.

When I am really working at it I weigh Every morning when I am being really bad then i avoid the scale like the plague
!

Lol--yeah.....

Have a great Thursday! :)

I love brussell sprouts! I like mixing them with olive oil and sea salt and roasting them. Husband doesn't like them roasted though so usually will steam them. Bought some shredded cabbage yesterday because they were
marked down and followed the directions on the package to make slaw, plus added raisins and some chopped pecans-- I liked it but husband didn't much (although he ate a ton) I've never done this so it's kind of monumental for me. Didn't have time to do much in the kitchen last night but I did go through and organize a counter top...
Something positive about myself--I'm very honest.

QOTD for yesterday -- I only check the scale when my clothes are fitting tighter. I guess I should have been checking it more often because I weighed in today and got a shock!:scared1: I have my work cut out for me!

Something positive-- even though I know I need to lose a few pounds, I feel comfortable in my body. I came to accept that I am no longer the 21 year old waif my husband married. :)

QOTD for today -- I hate to admit it, but I don't like veggies. I love salad veggies, but I guess they are all considered traditional. So, I would have to say mushrooms are my favorite "non-traditional" veggie. And, also cabbage, but not together.:)

Positive -- I am a pretty good reading teacher. Today one of my students that has been struggling all year shouted, "Hey, this book is easy!" And it was true!

QOTD--Jan 3, 2013 - Cabbage is about as non-traditional as I get. I am trying to add new veggies to my diet. Having a hard time finding recipes that the family will enjoy too.

Positive- I made it through a crazy day of work and did not allow myself to get "annoyed" at people.

Hi all!

QOTD - I like Swiss chard, yum. My mom grew it in her garden when I was a kid, and that's how I met it. I like it sautéed with garlic & a smidge of olive oil and salt. I'm much more of a fruit than a veggie person, so I take these little favorites where I can!

Positive thing - I'm good at my job. It's not my passion or life's calling, but people rely on my efforts, and I don't let them down!

Grabbing Subway for dinner and some rare solo reading time before my chorale rehearsal tonight...aaaahhhh. :)

I'm late to the party but would like to hop in. I think I will put myself back in the weight loss camp, even though I don't have much to lose. I've been maintaining for almost 3 years, but a pound here and a pound there have added up to more than I'd like to be.

I am really happy with the new format! Thanks, Rose, for starting us off!

It's busy at work so I'll have to catch up with everyone later!

Not really sure if they are non traditional but I LOVE mushrooms and zucchini. I am not sure yet though if mushrooms are one of the foods that make me sick. I have been avoiding them while not feeling well and need to try to figure it out at some point. For the zucchini I like to slice it and roast on a cookie sheet in the oven with a little olive oil, kosher salt and pepper. For a treat I will add some fresh shredded parm too.

Positive-- I got a cute new haircut and have gotten a lot of compliments on it.

There was a tragic popcorn accident in my bedroom last night - gotta go clean that up.
That sounds like a story I want to hear! popcorn::

A good day today. Got to walk some things over to the other end of the building today--it is a pretty far distance as far as getting around a school goes, so that was great. I keep meaning to use my pedometer and see how far it really is from my office to the other end of the building. I think it may be about a quarter mile (it is kind of a unique building) but I may be way off.

Didn't eat so great though. :( Had a few mini chocolate bars. I have GOT to figure out a way to resist the big bags of chocolate in the office. I can probably get my coworkers to throw things at me if they see me getting into the bag. . .:duck: :rotfl: Tomorrow is order out Friday. I actually have several days of really good leftovers for lunch but it is kind of an important social thing in the office and as the new girl I can't really decline. I will probably just order a small soup or salad. Give me your WISH strength to resist the bad!

Having Roast Beef and broccoli for dinner. Need to figure out the starch component for the rest of the family. Better go finish cooking so we can eat before bed time!

very exciting about your upcoming trip Jill! Where are you staying?

We are staying at Pop. The kids love it and I think the next time we go, we'll need more space so we'll stay off site (the horror!!) or move up to a villa.

Hi :wave2:

I am Fran. I am a remedial reading teacher in a suburb outside of Pittsburgh. I have 3 boys and a wonderful husband. One son is a college freshman at Penn State and I have a high school senior who is going through the college search right now. He just found out he received a partial scholarship to his top pick. :cool1: And my baby is turning 13 in 10 days.

Now, my husband is not a Disney fan ... however, we are having a contest to see who can lose the most weight and maintain it my June 1st. If I win .... he agreed to go to Disney and not complain! So help me out my Disney friends. :goodvibes

Positive: My reading kids have been doing great this year. Keeping me fingers crossed they practiced a bit over break.

Off to get ready for work tomorrow. Have a great day tomorrow everyone!

Fran! How was your Christmas break? Where is your son's top pick for college? I asked my students how many read over Christmas. Granted it was 9th-12th graders, but none of them read a book. They informed me they read the newspaper, texts, and tweets. Ugh.

Posting early, since I really need to get to work on time and I think I will run in the morning. :)

How often do you weigh/ get on the scale?

And you know it's coming--say something positive about yourself.
:)

I weigh myself daily. If I only weigh in once a week, I lose focus. Weighing in daily makes me focus. If I see the scale go up at all, I regroup & reevaluate my eating and exercise.

Positive~I went back to work feeling so refreshed after break. I really focused on my family and relaxing for 12 days. One student even asked what was wrong with me that I was smiling so much and so happy lol.

Good morning!

Jill, I saw your post about where you live, I have friends in the Hubbard and Cortland areas of Ohio. Are you anywhere near Kranyak's? We've been there a few times during past Christmas seasons. :)

Hilarious! We live in Sharon, so we are about 3 minutes away from Kraynak's. We go frequently for Christmas & Easter lanes. Plus, we get flowers & gardening things there. DSs love their toy department & used to love the Thomas the train section when they were younger. Did you know they do an Easter lane?

I go to Hubbard to get gas at Flying J since it's so much cheaper than PA. And we go to Niles a lot for Sam's club, Toys R Us, & Target.

Small world!

I can switch coaching weeks and take this week if the last week of January works better for someone. Also I will have four weeks in February where we will need coaches if anyone would prefer a week in February. Please let me know. It is a lot of fun and Rose is correct a lot of our coaches report good losses the week that they coach.

Have a great day all! :goodvibes

I will coach the week starting Feb 15. That's a Friday so I guess it'd be Feb 15-21? Please let me know if this is still available & if you'd like to me do it. I love coaching weeks!! I will also pm you just in case.

Jan 25th is soo soon, how awesome! We will be there then, I hear it's a wonderful time to go.

Cool. We went the exact same week 2 years ago & it was wonderful. We walked on to everything & the weather rocked. Coming from chilly PA (our schools actually had a snow day because of an ice storm while we were down there), the kids loved swimming in January. I'm hoping for good weather! I saw your countdown. Will you be at the Poly? We'll be at Pop. I'm hoping to watch the water pagent & fireworks from the Poly beach one night...probably with a dole whip in my hand :)

I actually love all veggies with the exception of beets & radishes. My family just likes the basics (broccoli, green beans, salad veggies, carrots, celery, peppers) so I don't make a lot of nontraditional ones at home. When we eat out, I usually order them. Sorry I can't offer any recipes.

Positive~I avoided a coworker's stash of Reese's cups during a lunch meeting. Trust me, they we not just calling my name, they were screaming it through a megaphone! But, I looked away. I'm pretty sure it physically hurt :rotfl2:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It took me so long to catch up on 2 1/2 days of posts, that I have no time to write anything else. DSs are playing the Wii & I want to go join in, so I am heading off to do that. Have a great night & I'll check back tomorrow!
