Clothes for a Med cruise?

We just booked a Med cruise for Aug and now I'm wondering how to pack. I was in Italy 20+ yrs ago and remember no knees or shoulders showing to enter churches. For me that's easy since I can wear capris and a short sleeve top. What do guys wear on hot day? Long pants?

It gets HOT and Humid in the big cities so I (male) brought a pair of those pants that the legs can zip off and walked the city in shorts but when we entered the Holy areas I wore them as long pants. My wife also wore the same with a sweater in the back pack and daughter did the same with my daughter bringing a pair of stretchy pants that she pulled on under her skirt. Bring cool clothes because even in Venice the locals head to the hills because of the summer heat.

DH took long pants in Aug 2008, but wore nice longer bermuda shorts with collared knit polo in Aug 2010 and Aug 2011. He was never turned away from any cathedral, including St. Marks. I wore sleeveless cotton shirts and capris with scarf in my bag to wrap over my shoulders for churches.
Also, take a couple cheap small umbrellas--great for keeping sun off you while walking and waiting in line.

In Venice they sell beautiful lace paracels (sp ??) umbrellas. My daughter purchased one for not so much money and it does work well for the sun.

If the shorts cover their knees, it's perfectly acceptable to wear shorts.

I'll have to look at my teen boys' shorts. I think they might cover their knees. Dh wears Dockers style shorts and I know his knees show. I'll have to look around for the zip off pants. They were popular a few years ago but I haven't seen them lately.

I was wondering about this. We go in June where the temps appear to be a high of 81 on average. I haven't seen those zip pants in awhile!

We have been there in June also and it is quite bearable in temps. Longer shorts are plentiful and I never seen anyone "kicked" out for dress. I have worn those golf type shorts and it was accepted when we toured. I wouldn't sweat the clothing too much. You can always tell Americans by their footwear...white sneakers...

I'm not trying to blend or keep from looking like a tourist. I'm just trying to be respectful of their customs. To me, it's like when Europeans cruise DCL and little kids use the outside showers at CC nude or prepubuscent girls go on the beach topless. Here we don't do that and the fact that no one says anything to them doesn't mean it's not breaking our rules/norms.

Yes I agree......I was told that "fact" by a local guide in Spain. And then I looked around and sure enough the locals were all either in heels or dress shoes or athletic shoes other than white. I totally agree with being very respectful for after all we are their "guests" and act accordingly.

Thanks! Funny, no one in my family wears white sneakers! My DS has Nikes in some of the most obnoxious colors! I figured that would be the giveaway

For what it's worth I actually saw people turned away at San Pietro.
I lived in Rome a few years ago and visited the Vatican museums quite often, every now and then they turned away women in tank tops and men in shorts, always especially hideous ones (very short or rather looking like swimming shorts).
I bought some skirts for my time in Italy, they were actually quite nice as the sun didn't burn my calves.
