Anybody Disers have an opinion (ha!) on the Google Chromebook? Not into gaming or movies. Will use for email/social networking. Will need word or something similar.

no opinion on the chromebook, but Im waiting till next year for the surface pro, a notebook/tablet hybrid

My brother has one and loves it. The only catch with a chromebook is that you need internet access for everything to work.

Its pretty much a cloud device. And yes, there are word processing programs. You can also use google drive for documents and spreadsheets. I already use it for school. Homework is done on the computer and I pull it up in class on my tablet. Its all saved to the google account. It also allows you to share anything you create with other people.

Its cool, and has an awesome keyboard, but I dont see the appeal since I have a tablet.

I've had a Chromebook for just short of a year (last year's Christmas gift) & have used it everyday. From what you say you'll use it for it sounds perfect for you. I used mine for browsing the web & YouTube.

It doesn't force you to really embrace the cloud to sync up for files everywhere. Google Docs is a great replacement for word. You do near to be hooked up to the net always to make best use of it; but more & more apps are gaining offline functions & progress is constant with new features & updates.

Any questions would be happy to answer.

For the relatively light usage you suggest you need, I would say a chromebook may fit your needs very well. It's all online-based, so generally you don't install any software per se, which makes the setup and operation a lot simpler than most computers.

Google Docs should more than meet your needs for a Word replacement, most likely. You might also enjoy their speedy boot/load time.

I've currently got two (fair disclosure: due to my employment, I may be biased) at home, and would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

hubby has one just to surf the web or to watch netflix...

WHAT? That would be a deal breaker for me. I can't be looking for a Starbucks or McDonalds just to have internet when I'm out & about. What happens when I'm on a train & no Internet? Or at a conference & there's no WiFi in the building?

I am too. I like the price of the Chromebook, but it's operating system IS for Chrome. I've always been a Windows person. Even with the bugs they have when they release a new operating system, they soon fix it. (Except for Vista. :sad2: ) Chromebooks is so new, we really don't what the bugs are yet, or how they will handle any of it. We also don't know how upgradable a Chromebook will be. Will it be obsolete in 1-2 years? All my Windows products have lasted me 5 years before I have been forced to upgrade as the latest software works with such an old OS. I don't buy a lot of fancy electronics every few months. So the items I do my have to last.

I also don't want the problem I've noticed Mac users have. Stand in any Staples, Office Depot or software department for 10 minutes and you will hear a Mac user ask, "But, does that software work on a Mac?" "Umm. . . no, not yet." I don't want to be asking, "Will that work on Chromebooks?"

You don't buy chromebook software in stores. You get it from google or you don't get it.

Your system automatically updates.

Generally you would have a wifi box or other device for getting a wifi signal through a cell phone tower for on the go stuff.

Since there's no software or OS, boot time is only like 8 seconds. It's very light for easy traveling, so people who fly or take the train it's a great option.
