Coffee - press or instant?

I have a plastic Bodum press, but I'm considering taking Satrbucks Via as an alternative so I don't have to clean the pots. Any thoughts??

I love the Starbucks Via. I plan on taking a dozen on our cruise and simply requesting hot water from room service or access it at the self-serve area.

Do you wash out the press? Where?

A french press make far superior coffee to instant. The water at the beverage station is reasonable hot and worked well for me. I used a stainless steel press so I don't have to worry about breaking it.

I added a little water and dumped the grounds in the laundry room garbage can. As you probably know you don't want to wash the grounds down the drain.

I brought Starbuck's Vias on my last cruise and after so many days I got sick of them. They just aren't that good. Neither is the coffee on the ship and the cafe is too pricey for coffee. I would invest in a press.

How pricey is too pricey? Are we talking Starbucks Costa Rica Finca Palmilera pricey? Or just standard resort pricey? I go into full blown withdrawal by 9am without coffee, and I can't stand the weak stuff. (I can't help it, I was born in Seattle.)

Starbucks coffee drink pricey. And although that's not a lot of money once it can seem like it after 14 days when you don't even feel the coffee is very good and doesn't seem strong enough. Just didn't seem with the cost. If I had to do it again I'd bring a press, a Tervis cup, and make my coffee in the room and use the ships's milk and sweetener on deck or at breakfast.

Ok, I'm bringing the press. It is infinitely better coffee than the via, but I was worried about the logistics of cleaning etc.

An alternative to the press is the melita cone and filter. I've used this for years and years if I just want one cup of coffee, even at home. Plastic cone, paper filter, coffee, pour the water through.

I took one to China with me with those little packets of coffee they sell in the grocery stores for about $1 (vacuum sealed, 2-3 oz). One packet makes about 4-5 cups. People were asking where we got the coffee from every morning because it smelled really good.
