Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread

I'm doing Higdon Novice 1 and I do my 1 20 mile run as my big Christmas gift to myself (I would've preferred just coal in the stocking quite frankly), then 12, then 8, then... marathon! the long-ish Wednesday runs go from 10 to 8, 8, and 4 and the other two midweekers run around 4-5 miles.

Now, though, I'm just trying to get through this without everything completely breaking down (I type from my heating pad)...

Just finished my first 20 of the season in 4:02:xx. Man, I forgot how long 4 hours is. LOL.

I know!!! I did 19 for the first time ever and even though my "running time" was 3:10, between bathroom breaks and gels and the face plant at mile 7 and changing clothes at mile 8 bc I was too hot, I spent 4 hours on my run. And it was pretty miserable! The only positive I can get out of it was that my fastest mile was mile 19!

That's awesome. My last three miles today were terrible, but I'm hoping that's because I ran 10 miles yesterday and 7 the day before.

I'm doing Hal Higdon's Marathon 3 and my taper is:

12/22-20 miles
12/29-12 miles
1/5-8 miles

The 20 miler should be interesting as I'll be on a cruise that week, so it will likely be a treadmill LR on the high seas!

Sounds like a mixed bag this weekend. Some good long runs some not so good. Mine went pretty well. I'm now back to where I was pre-injury. Considering I only got cleared to resume running three weeks I should be happy with a good, strong, pain free 11 miler today but it's hard to not to think about where I "should" be. Still, I wanted to make sure those out with an injury know that you can bounce back pretty quickly.

Plan going forward is:

11/25: 14
12/2: 16
12/9: 11
12/16: 18
12/23: 20
12/30: 11
1/6: 6
1/13: 26.2!

I'm doing the Space Coast Marathon a week from today too, and my legs are really complaining from all the long training runs I've been doing over the past 1 1/2 months. I'm reminding myself I just need to finish the Space Coast Marathon alive and not try to do more than that. Do you know if they start the SCM in waves separated by 5-6 minutes like WDW races, or if everyone starts at once? With the course closing in 7 hours from the initial start of the race, the folks in the last corral (like me no doubt) won't have the full 7 hours to finish. I don't expect to need all 7, but I won't be that far off from it either. :rotfl2:

After a 23 miler 2 weeks ago and the Wine & Dine Half last weekend, this weekend's 7 miles was much less miserable, but my lower legs are still griping and I'm never not tired anymore. I should've picked the "Finish upright" plan for the 2013 WDW Marathon instead of the "Time improvement" plan. Live and learn, I guess. Oops.

The start is not a wave start just a go and we're off. Takes a while for the field to reach the start line but the Full has less than half the number of entrants as the Half. Don't think there will be much more than 5+ minutes for full to clear start.

Again, the concerns are interesting to read. Guess I am too relaxed about the whole marathon next Sunday and the Dopey in January since I only walked with DW this morning for 4.3 miles then went for a 63 mile bicycle ride. I'm thinking about walking with the 4:30 pace group and see how things go. Walked last year's half in 2:11:12 so I'll simply go with the flow and not worry about things and besides, I'm too old to think about fast times.

wow. great job amy. and thanks again for the PT recommendation. i'm seeing him tomorrow!

****

i spoke to a PT today who i will see tomorrow and he seems pretty awesome. told me to stop running immediately (done!) and that we'd work together. said that having an 18miler already under my belt puts me in a good position and that after all of this i will really learn alot.

please say a quick prayer for your friend dumbo buddy that this knee thing gets figured out. as of right now, i can't walk at all without pain :worried:

Thank you! My middle miles were kinda ugly and I considered quitting several times but felt better by the last 6 or so!

I know throughout this thread it has been discussed, but has anyone successfully completed a marathon with Hal Higdon's novice 1 program? It looks like if I switch from Galloway to Higdon, I may not be completely screwed. I'm pretty confident I could do 13 miles at this point. I think the hardest thing for me to get over is that you stop at 20. I would feel so unprepared!

My step-down long run this weekend was a bit rough due to pain and discomfort during the last part of the run. I did 10 miles. Second run of the weekend was today: 4.5 miles and it went great. Managed to do both at exactly the same pace. I guess I am consistent?:rotfl2:

I am several weeks behind due to injury, but I am trying to get most of the way there without getting hurt, and raising my mileage as I can. Next week is 14 miles. I'm following a modified Galloway with my long run every three weeks and shorter 10 mile runs for the other longish runs in between. I am running 4 times a week, with speed work mid-week and totalling 20-32 miles altogether. I also cross-train twice a week. I wish I could have done more to prepare, but c'est la vie. Injuries suck. I did run TOT the end of September and a HM each in October and November.

My longest run will be 18-20 miles Dec 16 (with 16 miles Dec 2, and 10 miles Dec 9), then tapering down 10 miles, 8 miles, then marathon weekend!

I am hoping just to finish the weekend and run reasonably well, with lots of walking. I have trained as hard as I could.

I have! The 2012 WDW Full Marathon. I'm using the same plan to train for Goofy. :) And I didn't get my 20-miler in due to an ice storm, so I topped out at 18 and still finished.

If I hadn't just registered for the Nike Women's 1/2 in DC I might actually have money left over to cover 50% of the bag's cost... :) I'm confused, though, does it say marathon on it?

Why? Why do they do it to me??? I bought the big D&B at the PHM. At least they're offering this one in advance. I almost got trampled when I reached for my bag at the expo in February.

Sent from my iPad using DISBoards. Please excuse the typos.

When does everyone typically start their taper for marathon weekend? I have my longest run set for December 18th. Just curious if im doing this correctly. Also, all my long runs have a run thats half the distance the day before (Goofy Training).

Christmas Eve. My longest run is set for the 23rd (doing the Goofy)

My schedule looks like this:

11/24-25 - 13/10 (back-to-back runs, the 24th is a HM race)
12/1-2 - 10/15 (back-to-back runs)
12/9 - 10 (cutback week)
12/15-16 - 16/13 (back-to-back runs, the 16th is a HM race)
12/23 - 18-20 (last Long Run)

Thanks for the info about the Space Coast Marathon start! Good to know the way that works, since it's my first non-Run Disney race. :)

Yesterday was my longest run yet, 15 miles. The last 3 miles were kinda ugly lol. We ran at a reservoir, very hilly, branches to dodge, by the end I was sluggish for sure. My running partner did 2 more miles after I stopped! LOVE it! I am achey today but not as bad as I thought. December 1st is my 17 miler, I am going to start earlier, so it isn't pitch black when I finish!

Kim, you rocked it! SO glad we went together. Would love to do it again. I agree, we will have to get out a little earlier. I felt pretty good today. Just a little sore in my quads if I tried to chase the dog. Now my gluts feel a little sore sitting here on my butt. Definitely feeling those hills! I need my beach route back! Curse you Sandy the hurricane!

If I have time this coming weekend, I am debating on trying for 18 :scared1:. Unfortunately I'm gonna have to work some this weekend so I will be lucky if I can get a short run in. Otherwise 18 will be my birthday present to myself :crazy2:
