Southwest is offering 50,000 points again! Question?

If I get this card right now, will I be able to purchase our flights using the points for a December 2013 trip and cancel the credit card before our trip comes up? I would think that since I used the points already, this would be okay but just wanted to check if anyone did this yet.

Yes....but you might as well keep the card for a full year as your paying the 12 month annual fee up front.

It's paid up front? I must've missed that. Last time we did the deal, we didn't pay anything till the 12 month mark which is when I cancelled.

I am consdering this also. How much is the annual fee?

Not sure about this time, but the last couple times offered it was either $79 or $99. We use our Disney Visa so decided not to get this one right now. If I had a specific trip planned I would probably go for it.

There are some restrictions. You would need to look closely at the terms and conditions.

Any idea how far 50,000 points would get you? We fly from Boston or Providence. Would it be tickets for 2 people or 4? We have no set dates in mind.

The fee is $99 which is still awesome for 50,000 points. We flew 4 people round trip for FREE using 48,000 points in May. It's a much better deal than anything the Disney Visa offers.

Yes, even if you cancel the card, the points remain active for as long as you use or earn points very 24 months (i would double check that date)

Yes you pay an annual fee, but they give you anniversary points to cover the fee

As for Boston, check the site, you can look up how many points it take, basically put in dates and then once it shows prices click points. Out of Buffalo we got points for more than 4 round trip flights.

I should've mentioned, I found flights for $79-$89 so that's how we used it for 4 people instead of 2 and we flew from Milwaukee to Orlando nonstop both ways.

According to the rep my husband talked to this week, the card must be open for 6 months or your points would be forfeited. He was just trying to tie up some loose ends and since the points hit our account he was going to cancel it.

And the hit on your credit score? Anyone considered this?

Our credit scores are very strong and we aren't looking for new loans anytime soon. We're not worried about it. If we had shaky credit or wanted a new loan, it would be a different story.

Great deal! I signed up when it was 30,000 a while ago and thought that was a good deal at the time.

It used to be 60 points/$1. So 50,000 points would be $833. Which after the annual fee, is still $733 to use for trips. I think the conversions might be even better now? Just pulling up some flights, seems like some of the $100 flights are only 5100 points when they used to be 6000.

I took advantage of this promotion in 2010. As soon as my year was coming up, I cancelled the credit card. Any ides if I would still qualify for the 50,000 points if I applied for the card again?

I was wondering the same thing, but I just cancelled mine this year.
Also, just an FYI if you don't need all the points for travel you can use them to get gift cards to many stores. I ended up getting a round trip flight from Maryland to California, 4 movie theater tickets and $250 toward the purchase of my new camera at Best Buy for only the $79 fee. I thought that was quite the deal!:thumbsup2

Months ago DH got the card and the points, we cancelled it, applied for another not long after and got the points again.

I have a personal card and a business card.

My husband called because he got the mailing but had previously had a card and cancelled over 2 years ago. They told him he would not qualify for the points so I opened a card.
