Car rental in Grand Cayman

Has anyone rented a vehicle for the day while in Grand Cayman? We have vacationed there before and want to hit some of our favorite stops. Any deatils on this would be appreciated.

I haven't while on a cruise stop there but did rent for a day while staying at a resort. I rented at Avis at the Ritz, and getting ready to rent at the airport this week. Unless you are used to driving British style (left side of road, round-abouts, and right side of car), I recommend getting the insurance coverage.

After seeing traffic and comparing rental car vs. just getting in a taxi prices, the lack of parking..there is no way I would rent

We haven't rented while on a cruise stop, but have made about a dozen trips there and rented one for the week. We have used both Andy's and Coconut Car Rental and never had a problem.

Check with your credit card company regarding insurance coverage. The only country we've purchased their insurance in is Mexico, and that is because they have changed the laws and require it (or a giant hold on your credit card). Taxi rates on Grand Cayman are pretty steep. Driving on the left-hand side isn't that hard to get used to. I find it easier when I get a right-hand drive vehicle, but most of them are left-hand drive.

When we stayed at the Ritz on our vacation a few years ago we rented a jeep for a few days. My husband has driven there (and no accidents!) and after the first 15 minutes my heart calmed down and we enjoyed the adventure.
It was rather simple to rent a car from the resort where we were staying, I didn't know if there were other options closer and easier to access from the pier.

We are planning at least three different destinations/locations so with the limited time on the island and the high cost of taxis they really aren't an option.

We took the public bus (they are actually vans) to get around the island. Very easy to take them. First we went to the Turtle Farm, then from the turtle farm, we caught another bus to Seven Mile beach to go eat (waves were too rough to swim when we were there), then took a 3rd bus back to Georgetown to the bus depot. Bus fare is $2.50 pp so our total transportation costs were $15 total for the 2 of us. The drivers were very friendly and were all Jamaican. We were the only ship there so no others on the bus except a few locals getting on and off at various stops. One of the drivers was from Falmouth, Jamaica and we had a nice discussion about the area as I had visited a resort in Falmouth many years ago. I told him there was a rumor that DCL might stop there, and when we got back last week, DCL added it to the itinerary!

We rented a Jeep in Grand Cayman for the day...it was about $100 including the extra insurance so we were covered no matter what happened to the car. Peace of mind. I think we rented from Avis, and we got picked up in a gift shop just opposite the tender dock and taken out by the airport where the rental place was. There was a petrol station right next to the airport, so that was easy upon the return.

Friends of mine used to own a house at Cayman Kai up near Rum Point. I'd been to Cayman a few times and knew the roads, so we were happy to be able to get a car and visit all the old haunts. Once you get out of Georgetown the drive-on-the-left thing is a bit less scary, plus my DH is an expatriated Brit so I let him drive! Oddly, he's been in the US so long I don't think it was all that much of an advantage.

We wanted to explore several places and get all the way up to Rum Point so the rental car worked best for us. If you really just want to go to Georgetown and one other spot, public transport probably works just as well. Plus, there's much to be said for just joy riding around a Caribbean island in February in an open-air Jeep!

Are there car rentals near the terminal/dock or would we need to go to the Ritz or airport to rent one?

At least two of the car rental companies we looked at offered "cruise passenger packages" on their websites and both included pickup right at or near the tender dock to where the cars were parked (by the airport) and back again. We asked to be dropped off on the way back at Margaritaville, and they obliged.

Michelle, we are on the same cruise with you and have decided to rent a jeep so we can tour on our own. I just booked with Avis. Looking forward to exploring Grand Cayman. It is our first time visiting this island.
