Some Parents/Some Children....

I must live in a bubble because I am shocked a child would find it funny to kick or hit an animal. I've never seen anything like that.

On the opposite end of animal treatment, I was staying at All Star Music a few years ago and while I was walking back to my room one evening, I saw some kids feeding a raccoon french fries. I tried to tell them this was not a good idea, but they ignored me, of course. They were standing outside their room so I guess the parents were in the room not paying attention to what their kids were doing.

did they go together? we saw little children, on their own.

your children have lovely names :grouphug:

Sometimes..sometimes no..but my kids are also small for their age..my almost 11 year is often thought to be 8 and my 9 year old 6 and the 7 year old 4 or 5..lol.. Mostly the youngest was with a sibling. Our room was literally 30 seconds from the food court..

I will never understand why parents can discipline their children. They don't seem to realize that they are doing their kids a disservice by allowing them to run rampant over everyone, and everything, in their path. It does not make them pleasant to be around. But, parents seem to think their precious children are perfect..and everyone else is wrong, not to mention mean spirited!!!!

too many parents are wrapped up in themselves. I refuse to be that way. in fact I am probably too on my kids about respecting the world around them. But my kids behave and darn well do in public. Even my youngest, who is a handful ( I say he's my karma for every comment and evil eye and ",my kids would never do that" from the 11 years of motherhood before I had him) knows how to behave..does he always do it..no..but do I allow that..heck no!

My kids will never push in front of an adult , talk over an adult, harm an animal in anyway..and if they even tried they'd wish they hadnt ( no I dont beat them).

Wednesday night we went trick or treating wirh friends and some 18 kids. The rules in MY house with MY kids is they don't touch the candy until we get home. My 7 year old saw friends kids eating their candy. The temptation was too great and he shoved a mini snickers in his mouth. He lost the privilege of ToTing for 4 houses because of that. One of the dads ( who's kids are not bad kids but def dont have manners) told me I was awful.. Oh well..I will bet ya Taejan never takes candy out of his bag again without following the rules.

I refuse to raise monster kids. I don't fine bad behavior cute..and the older they get the less so...the rest of the world has to deal with my children when they are adults..I need to do a good job!

I am sorry, but I have a problem with this. What this child did is wrong, but wanting to slap him, is wrong too. :confused3

This is just a phrase. I say it all the time to people who cut me off in traffic. No one actually does it but it's a phrase, it's just words. Words don't harm people or animals. Kicking does. I highly doubt the poster you are quoting would actually go up to a child and slap him, no matter how stupid the kid was behaving.

I agree, I say stuff like when frustrated too, and yes it's just a phrase. Also, it's fine to actually want to slap someone, as long as you don't follow though lol

While waiting to get our Kim Possible mission we heard a loud group excited about something. There they all were, a group of maybe 15, posing in the middle of the walkway to get pictures holding a duck. Not just holding it, but passing it around to every member of the group for the next shot.:headache:

I finally said something to the woman running the Kim Possible booth and she went over and not so nicely told them that they couldn't do that.

But really? Why do people need to be told that a defenceless creature doesn't want to be held and passed around to your children and Uncle Billy and Auntie Suzie for 15 minutes for you to get a picture. You're in Disney World for heavens sake.. it's not like there's a lack of interesting photo opportunities.

BRAVO!!

I have NO qualms about pointing out blatantly bad behavior from children...behavior that could hurt another, an animal, etc. You can bet that I'm THAT woman that says in a loud voice "HEY!!" to get the attention of the offender and those around the area. I draw attention to bad behavior so that it can be stopped before something bad happens. I want the child and or the parents to feel the disapproving stares of others in hopes that the behavior stops. I understand that what goes on behind closed doors is probably worse, but it wouldn't be right to allow things such as hurting animals, dangerous behavior, or even downright inconsiderate/rude acts such as pushing someone purposefully or cutting in line. I don't feel this is a "holier than thou" type of attitude, but I do feel that everyone in this modern CIVILIZED society needs to act appropriately. Naughty Parents..Naughty Children. :(

I don't beat my children either, but I have a look that can stop them in their tracks! I think they are terrified of what might come AFTER that look if they push any further!! ;)

I don't think all parents are just lazy when it comes to disciplining their children... not after I dealt with my nieces years ago. After I heard "Auntie, please don't beat me again" and "You are not my mommy" come from their mouths...I died! I asked where they heard this from and they said the school bus.

I freaked!!
I learned the "Cut it out" stare from my father and it has worked ever since.

I think some parents get frustrated and tired and try to ignore it. They should get some helpful tips from friends and family instead to prevent their children from ending up in jail for animal abuse...or maybe something worse!

I have used the stare on kids that I am not related to and it works like a dream...no parent has ever said something to me about it..

No, I meant it as just that. I wanted to slap the child but would never actually do it since I don't believe in child abuse either. It was just a thought running through my mind.

It was just so frustrating seeing a child do this and then laugh about it repeatedly while the parents just stood there. Even other people walking by were shocked at how this child was acting. I mean, the animal is small compared to a human and almost defenceless against him.

This

FWIW...I have even had the cops called on me once for YELLING at my child in public and THREATENING to make her stay in her room for a very long time because she was refusing to do what I asked her/she agreed to do. Like staying in her room was a punishment :rotfl2:

Since that happened about 4 years ago I am VERY VERY careful about disciplining my children in public.
Me too. About 10 yrs ago, on an icy, snowy day, my son and I were leaving the school. He ran on ahead of me, nearly into the path of a car coming to the loading zone at the school. I grabbed him by hair, and swatted him on the back (admittedly, not the butt), and I was reported to CPS. He missed being hit by the car by less than 18 inches. I wonder what would have happened had the car not been able to stop, and my son were hit by the car. I guess that would be my fault, too.

Another acquaintance was put in jail for yelling at and pushing his daughter because she was arrested and put in juvenile detention for breaking and entering the school after hours.

So, you have to be VERY careful about publicly disciplining children these days. It almost seems it is PC to spare the rod and spoil the child.

I still think common sense applies when correcting bad behaviour for children in public. Really, if you see your kid(s) abusing an animal you are afraid to correct them in public? (sounds like an excuse to me). Sure, if you hit or grab them to harshly you may be reported but hopefully when the situation was explained to an authority common sense would prevail.

I think if a parent retains control of their emotions when disciplining an unruly kid, you'll be fine I think when a parent is at the end of their rope and corrects their kids, this is more likely to be reported.

Regarding the comments about feeling sorry for the kid because of the parents, I don't get that. Just because you are young, is not a reason to find it enjoyable to hit animals. When I was four or five, we went to a circus. I couldn't wait to leave because I heard the cracking of the trainer's whip. To this day, it haunts me and I hate when the circus comes to town.

There are always tons of ducklings at the Beach Club in the spring. Every year there is at least one little kid that harasses the ducks. This year, the ducklings were separated from their mother and couldn't get out of the pool. The lifeguard was amazing and set up a bunch of towels on the ledge to help the ducks. He asked a few people to escort the ducks to the area. A bunch of kids saw what was happening and started violently swimming towards the ducks and spazzing out. The lifeguard yelled at them a few times and all of them stopped, but one. This little boy got out of the pool and jumped in, trying to land on the ducklings. He did this around 7 times. The lifeguard was screaming at him and all of the adults in the pool. I don't know if his parents were around, but he was in an 8 foot section and he was only 7 or 8. He wasn't the best swimmer either. It was sick.

On another note, a Captain Cook's, I saw this little girl at the dole whip machine. She didn't have a cup for it, so she put her mouth on the little nozzle thing and she pulled the lever. It was disgusting! I didn't know where her parents were, I figured they were at a table, but I don't see why they would let a five year old run up there alone. I wish I had said something to her, but I was in a rush.

All kids have to learn that others have feelings, or mature to the point of understanding that. Some kids are very empathic at an early age, but OTOH I've known kids as old as five or six who had an intellectual understanding that others hurt as they did, but they still didn't "get it" on an intuitive level. I wonder if they would have had that intellectual understanding down even that early, if their parents weren't pounding it into their heads on a regular basis.

The kids don't lack compassion -- when they can intellectually understand someone else hurts when whatever happens, they want to help and comfort -- but they lack empathy in the sense of intuitively understanding that "if that were me, it would hurt". Some kids really struggle to acquire that ability to put themselves in another person's place, let alone to recognize that animals feel pain as well.

OTOH, there are adults in my husband's family who still think it's funny their dad used to torture cats, and gleefully retell their various tales. They're old enough to know better, and on some level they do know better (they don't torture cats themselves), but the fact that they were raised that way absolutely has had a negative influence on their compassion and empathy. They may know it's wrong, but it's still an intellectual knowledge, even though they're adults.

So kids absolutely can be taught it is okay to hurt animals, and even encouraged to do so, by the parents. There does come a point when the child has enough information to figure that out on their own that harassing animals is wrong, but with some kids that happens a lot later than it does with others; if the parents don't step up to fill that gap, then absolutely it is the parents' fault. The parents are failing the child, and I feel sorry for those kids. If they're still that oblivious as adults, that's when I start thinking they need to step up and fill that gap their parents left.

My mother used to have 'that' look too!!! When we would sit there in church, and do something to rightfully deserve that 'look', we would pray that God would send a lightning bolt down, thru our heads, rather than deal with our mother when we got home!!!

And why is it that my mother had that look down, but I can't seem to manage it???
