Our Wonderful "Pixar" Pacific Coast Cruise, October 7-14, 2012 ~ Completed! ~ w/ pics

I really enjoyed reading the start of your cruise trip report we will be taking our DD 12 on her first DCL next August on a 7 day Mediteranean Cruise really cant wait

You will love the Magic! :goodvibes

Fabulous pics coming into San Francisco! I so wanted to do one of the Pixar cruises, but DH wasn't interested in the itinerary. At least I talked him into going on another cruise, but seeing your pics was really fun!

Thanks! My DH wasn't thrilled with it at first either, but it grew on him and he really enjoyed San Francisco. :goodvibes

Yes! Thank you so much!!

No problem. :)

Beautiful pics of your trip into San Francisco! That has to be one of my favorite cities I've ever visited, it would have been amazing to sail under the golden gate!

It was very cool! :thumbsup2

My Mom's and my head are in your first pic of day 3. :lmao:

Going under the bridge and seeing it so clearly was definitely a highlight for me.

Too funny! :rotfl: I totally agree, going under the bridge was a definite highlight for us too.

Our plan as a group today was to take the DCL tour of Muir Woods and Sausalito. We met in Studio Sea at 9:15 AM, got our Pumbaa stickers and were escorted to the terminal and to our tour bus. We were so excited to see the city and drive over the Golden Gate Bridge. We learned a lot of interesting things about the city from our tour guide Diane on our way to the woods.

The woods were breathtaking and very enjoyable.

Besides being awe struck with the California Redwoods we also saw a deer.

DSC_0308_zps64924147.jpg

Before long, we had to board the bus again and head to Sausalito. We had lunch and walked up and down the main street enjoying the views of Richardson Bay and the city.

It was such a clear day, that we even had a lovely shot of the Wonder.

After our tour, we were dropped back at Pier 35.

After a short bathroom break, we walked over to Pier 39 to look around.

DSC_0354_zps0efbfedc.jpg

We had great, clear views of Alcatraz from the pier.

DSC_0360_zpsd42e0e09.jpg

DD really wanted to see the Sea Lions so we spent some time there.

DSC_0371_zps924c4397.jpg

We ran into our DNeighbors so we headed over with them to Boudin’s for some fresh sour dough bread. I loved how they shaped the loaves into animals.

I also loved these little gingerbread skeletons.

DSC_0387_zps39319e1f.jpg

We bought a small sour dough bread turtle and DD and I shared it. It was so yummy. After we ate the bread, we walked back to ship and went through security to get back onboard. The Wonder was docked on the other side of the building this trip.

Our dinner that night was at Parrot Cay. We were seated right next to the window with a view of the city. By now, Luan and Sasha became DD’s best friends. Every night for dinner, without fail, Luan would bring her a Strawberry Mango Smoothie.

PA070032_zps75810568.jpg

and Sasha would bring her strawberries, no matter what was offered on the menu. She was definitely spoiled.

But, Sasha didn’t ignore us adults either. Every night he would bring extra desserts for us to either try or share. :p

After dinner, L took DD and DNeighbor’s DD to see The Odd Life of Timothy Green at the theater. You mean we have another evening for ourselves? I brought my tripod with me so I dragged DH up on deck 10 with me to get some night shots of the city. It was absolutely beautiful.

DSC_0419.jpg

(I later found out the Coit Tower was bathed in orange lights in celebration of the Giants advancing in the play offs).

DSC_0433.jpg

After we got our photos, we headed down to Cadillac Lounge for a drink. We ended up talking to the bartender for a little bit as he recognized DH from the Martini tasting from the day before. It seemed to be a slow night, the place was practically empty.

DD had already run into 2 teachers :teacher: from her school while onboard. While we were sitting at the Cadillac Lounge a gentleman came up and asked me if I worked at a specific school, I am actually a volunteer, but I said yes. He recognized me because he used to teach at my DD’s middle school and I worked with his DD in Kindergarten where I volunteer. It truly is a small world. I was amazed at how many people from Arizona were on board this cruise.

After our drink, we went to pick up our DD from the movie and headed back to our room for bed. Our towel animal was a peacock.

Next: I left my hat in San Francisco!

San Francisco, CA

We woke up to another beautiful day in San Francisco. :sunny: We went up to have breakfast at Beach Blanket. I walked around on deck 10 and took some photos.

Our original plan was to take the DCL bus tour of the city. After reading a couple of reviews from previous cruises, we decided against this and ventured out on our own. We decided to go on a hop on/hop off Red Bus Tour. While it was convenient having somebody else drive you through the city, I was less than impressed with the tour. :( First off, we were given ear buds, but the sound system didn’t work for the first seven stops of the tour. So we didn’t get any information about the city. We went through downtown on our way to Union Square.

Saw a cable car on Powell Street.

We passed by Civic Center. While we were stopped here, a technician came onto the bus and fixed the sound system.

DSC_0492.jpg

We passed through Haight/Ashbury.

We decided to get off the bus at the Golden Gate Park. My original intent was to walk around and see the Flower Conservatory. However, DD had other plans. We ended up going into the California Academy of Sciences.

DSC_0573.jpg

It was actually very cool. I enjoyed the Rain Forest exhibit with its many butterflies

and the aquarium.

We also enjoyed the Foucault pendulum.

DSC_0555.jpg

We ended up having lunch there. After lunch we took a look at the baby ostriches. They were so cute.

DSC_0568.jpg

After a couple of hours at the museum we boarded another bus outside the DeYoung Museum

and headed towards the bridge.

Next: Day 4 continued.

Wendy...I am loving your trip report. We were on the same cruise but I love reading other people's trip reports.

I'm sorry you were disappointed with your hop on/hop off tour. If you ever visit San Francisco again, I highly recommend the Comprehensive San Francisco Tour Company's Premium City Tour. It was 5 hours and we saw so much of the city I feel that I really have seen San Francisco. We did this tour on our first day and our tour guide was Jan and she was fabulous. It was nice to be able to ask a local (she has lived all her life in San Francisco) about how to get to places we wanted to see the next day (like the Disney Store and what was the best cable car to ride). My Mom and I thoroughly enjoyed our time in San Francisco and I think the highlight of our two days was this tour. Here's a link to their web site:

I was so focused on trying to get a good clear picture of the bridge that I forgot I was wearing my DCL visor. Just as we started over the Golden Gate Bridge, I felt the wind whip my hat right off of my head onto the road. I was really ticked off at this point. As we went back over the bridge, there was my red hat, flattened in the middle of the street. I certainly couldn’t laugh about it then, but it has become funnier as time goes on. Fortunately, I was able to replace it easily. :)

We got off the next stop at the Palace of Fine Arts.

This was a beautiful location and we enjoyed walking around and taking pictures.

Afterwards, we got back on a bus, but the top of the bus was full. We waited a couple of stops and went on top. We stopped in front of Chintatown.

P1010930.jpg

We then rode the bus around the rest of the tour and got off at Pier 39.

P1010935.jpg

DSC_0654.jpg

On the way back to Pier 39, we spotted the Oracle catamaran out on the bay. San Francisco is hosting next year’s America’s Cup races and they were out practicing. Funny thing is, we read a week later that this catamaran was capsized during another practice run and damaged. We even saw video of it on YouTube.

P1010945.jpg

We walked to Fisherman’s Wharf.

DSC_0658.jpg

On the way we ran into our DNeighbors and L. They had ridden a cable car, visited Chinatown, North Beach and climbed Coit Tower. After we talked with them, we headed towards Ghirardelli Square. DD and I were after their famous hot fudge sundaes. DH wanted to stop at the Maritime Museum and look around, so we parted company. We got our ice cream and met up with him a little bit later. We did some souvenir shopping and headed back to the ship.

Dinner tonight was in Animator’s Palette. It was the night of the show, which everybody enjoyed. I also enjoyed the drink of the night.

DSC_0670_zps23c41a3d.jpg

The meal was also delicious as usual.

After dinner, we headed to Shutters to get some photos. We got a photo package through AAA when we booked our cruise. We also ran in to Frozone and L got a photo with him. DD, DH and I then went around the ship and took pictures. Then DD got to meet Flit and Atta from It’s A Bug’s Life. Afterwards at 9:30 PM DNeighbor and her DD joined DD and I at Who Wants To Be A Mouskateer? Unfortunately, we weren’t selected to play, but we had fun.

After the game show, we headed up to Deck 10 to watch us leave San Francisco and go back under the bridge towards open water.

DSC_0746_zps3b173c65.jpg

It was very windy and cold, it even started raining as we went under the bridge.

Then it was bedtime.

Our towel animal was a turtle.

Next: Princesses, Trivia and Pixar, oh my!

This is a great trip report!! And wonderful pictures! Especially love san fran at night. Stunning! Would like to have seen the flattened hat!

Thanks so much for sharing! I would love to do this in the future if it's offered. Can't wait to hear more about it!

Hi there!! Loving your report and pictures - we were on the cruise too! (Met you on the photo walk in Ensanada!) And like someone else said, I'm enjoying reliving through your photos!!
I was one of those on Deck 10 early on our San Francisco morning!! It was freezing standing there, but boy - what a view!! :lovestruc
I will follow along eagerly awaiting your updates!!
Thanks for doing the report!

I wanted to let you know I am enjoying your TR. We are sailing on the Wonder through the Panama Canal next month, so I am trying to read all the Wonder TR to get a feel for the ship and what activities we can do.

Welcome and thanks! We liked the concept of hopping on and off so we could enjoy some of the sites, but I just wasn't impressed with the whole tour part of it. Anyway, next time we go, we'll look into this other company. :goodvibes

Following along. I am loving the pictures!

Thank you! :flower3:

Thank you! Yes, SF at night was stunning and cold up on the deck at night, but well worth it. In regards to my visor, can you say as flat as a pancake? ;)

Hi Heather! Welcome to my report. I am a big fan of your photos on the boards. :worship:

It was cold, :cold: but I wouldn't have missed standing up there and going under the bridge for the world! It was amazing!

I'm heading off to participate in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes this morning. It is a beautiful day here in Phoenix! I hope to have another update this weekend. Thank you all for reading!

Thanks! :flower3: I am so jealous! I would love to take a cruise through the Panama Canal, but they are always in the middle of school and I can't justify taking my DD out that long. You will love the Wonder! Have a great cruise!

A super trip report. Your photos are beautiful. :)

Thank you!

Sea Day

It was a good morning to sleep in. It was another beautiful day at sea. We went up to Beach Blanket for breakfast and ran into our neighbors again. We sat inside this time. Luan helped find a table this morning. While we were eating, our DNeighbor spotted some whale blows in the distance. Unfortunately, they were quite a ways away so we didn’t actually see any whales. :sad2:

After breakfast, I went to attend the talk by Robb Gibbs, an executive with Pixar about storyboarding. He works a lot on the Tow Mater Tall Tales series. He showed us how Pixar now uses the computer to draw their storyboards and he showed some clips from some short movies he worked on. It was very amusing and interesting. During the seminar, I received a text from DD that she wanted to go swimming (DH didn’t have the other phone and he was supposedly at Cove Café reading). The talk had run overtime, so I left during the Q &A to take DD swimming. When I got to the stateroom, she wasn’t there and wasn’t answering her wave phone. I went out to look for her. I found DD & DH on Deck 4 above the lobby waiting for the Princesses with our DNeighbors. princess:

DSC_0783.jpg

Evidently, Peter Pan was to make an appearance. He is DNeighbor’s DD’s very favorite character. While they went in search of Peter Pan, we went to take DD swimming up at the Goofy Pool. After a brief dip in the pool, we went down to Parrot Cay for lunch. I loved how they had hard packed ice cream with all the toppings for dessert.

At 1:45, I headed up to Deck 9, Goofy Pool to watch Ice Carving. It always amazes me how somebody can take a block of ice and turn it into a work of art. Fiona hosted the event. The carver had to work very fast as the ice was already starting to melt. There were ice chips flying everywhere!

After the carving exhibition, we went to the Pixar Pals in the Atrium Lobby. All the Pixar characters onboard made an appearance. Daniel emceed the event. At the end, we all said goodbye to the characters by singing “You’ve Got A Friend In Me.”

At 3:15 DD and I met DNeighbors at the Promenade Lounge for a round of Disney Theme Park Trivia. Daniel from the crew staff ran it. He was very good and made it a lot of fun. He would play music from a Disney attraction, you had to name the attraction and where it could be found, i.e. Disneyland, EPCOT, etc. Then there was a bonus question about the attraction. I really enjoyed the trivia games onboard, I only wish that I could have gone to more. We didn’t win, but we did pretty well. Some of the questions were pretty tough. After trivia, it was time to get ready for dinner.

It was semi-formal night and Toy Story 3D was the menu. They were having another Pixar Pal gathering before dinner. DD got her picture taken with Dug and Russell while DH and I had a formal portrait done. Then we had a family lifestyle portrait taken. We went to dinner in Parrot Cay. On the way to dinner, the CMs were selling Pixar Cruise drink cups and popcorn cars at the Promenade Lounge, 2 for 1. I had wanted to get the traffic cone drink cup with the Pixar Cruise logo on it and it seemed like the perfect time. We each got 3D glasses to see the cover of our Toy Story menu. Sasha told us that we get to take the menus home since they wouldn’t be used anymore. I’m sure somebody has put them on E-Bay by now. I enjoyed the Mai Tai with my dinner

DSC_0052_01.jpg

and a Mickey Bar for dessert. :mickeybar

DSC_0055_01.jpg

After dinner, DD and I went to the Toy Story show, since neither of us had seen it before. The theater was full, we were lucky to find a couple of seats 3 rows from the stage off to the side. Of all the shows I have seen on the Magic and Wonder, I have determined that Toy Story is not my favorite. In the meantime, DH went down to Diversions to see if they were showing the ASU vs Colorado football game. They weren’t, so, DH watched it in our stateroom before heading up to Café Cove for a bit. (ASU won! Go Devils!) Anyway, after the show DD and I headed up to the stateroom for the night. On our way, we ran into Cruise Minnie and Cruise Daisy.

Our towel animal was another dog. pluto:

Next: Here come the Zonies.

So glad to see you got your husband to go.

All your pictures are lovely especially San Francisco at night.

Your photos are amazing, I can tell that you hang out on the photography board (also your scavenger hunt siggie pic gives it away), but I'm loving all your pictures!

I never thought I would want to do a Pacific Coast cruise since I grew up in the Bay Area and live in the LA area, but seeing all this stuff makes me think that we could actually just enjoy seeing SF for a day or two without having to run out on visiting my parents. We might just have one of these cruises in our future as it looks like a lot of fun, the combination of crusing and getting to visit the City!

I thought this as well, living in the Bay Area. But I hate going into the city, so we rarely do. Maybe a coastal cruise would be a good chance to actually explore SF.

Loving the trip report. Awaiting your next updates.
