How did they clean up so quickly?

I've been following the Fantasy vs Hurricane Sandy stories as I'll be on the same cruise next year (maybe, gulp). I was just wondering how the CMs were able to clean everything up and replace/repair all the broken items in time before they left last night? Must have been a huge undertaking when there's so much to do to prepare under normal circumstances.

DCL works very hard and fast. We were in a cruise when a gust of wind broke a glass door and the ship had it cleaned and repaired in no time. Amazing, but they manage.

The shops don't normally open up until the ship is at sea that first night around 7 pm. I wondering if they may not have opened up at all last night (just guessing) and take last that night to finish cleaning up everything that was tossed around or broken.

I am sure we will hear reports if the shops were opened last night or not on the Fantasy. If they were then the CM's can be compared to Superman....what a huge undertaking.

I've seen pictures of at least one shattered window in Cabanas. I don't know if they have replacements onboard or at PC.

We were on the Fantasy, and while I can't attest to what time exactly the shops closed, I do know that any cast members that could handle it, were asked to come up and clean up the mess of glass, fixtures and everything in the shops throughout the night. They worked so hard to make everything seem as normal as possible by morning.:thumbsup2

Not sure, but yes to the shattered class in Cabanas. Also, the glass partition by the adult area was shattered and not sure if it was replaced by the time we all got off.

It is beyond me how they could have possibly cleaned up all the damage. We had glass all over our veranda. I certainly would not have been wanting to get back on the ship yesterday.

Think about it though, it's *Disney*! We have been at Mickey's Halloween Party the past two years at Disneyland. The next morning, there might be a couple of stray pumpkins strategically placed here and there for Thanksgiving, but almost everything "Halloweenish" is gone and there are plenty of Christmas decorations (including the gigantic tree) up already. It's magical!

Theres a complete division on the ship people rarely see or hear from. Theres ships carpenters electricians plumbers etc. Plus a whole area that supports them with machines tools etc. When something breaks they are summoned, evaluate the issue and figure out what to do. Theyll either fix it right then or there, or wait until the ship gets to port. They carry a lot of spares onboard with additional spares in a warehouse near the airport. Since a copy of the ships dimensions are on board for everything its not hard to make a repair. Im pretty sure that most things like glass for doors, balcony dividers, sliding glass doors are a standard size so they prob have a few of each on board.

I heard there was major damage to Palo and Remy. Anyone know if this is true?

We spent hurricane Jeanne at WDW. On Monday morning we got the "all clear" telling us that we were allowed to leave our rooms. I got up at 6am to do laundry (believing that I was being picked up at 9 for my cruise.....NOT). OK, on the way to the laundry room there were large tree limbs, the pool was covered in debris, etc. When I came out after doing a load of wash+dry (maybe 90 minutes), the pool was sparkling and ALL the limbs were gone from "public" areas. The wooded areas were still a mess, but anywhere a guest would logically walk was pristine.

We were told that WDW had moved many off duty CMs into the all star resorts, both for their safety and so that they would be available to begin clean up as soon as the weather permitted.

Also, we lost our air conditioner when a tree fell on the unit. I reported it, fully understanding that no one could come to check on it. They came out about 10 pm on Sunday with a huge searchlight thing and did the repair. This was after the storm seemed to have passed but before they allowed guests out of rooms.

I do realize that life is different on the ship, but these people are amazing!

You said it all in one word: AMAZING!

They are simply fantastic.

A bit OT maybe, but I've heard before that during hurricanes they have people in the parks, in a safe location obviously, waiting to report on what damage is done so they can get it fixed ASAP. So there is as little downtime as possible.

Truly magical, brave and amazing!

My neighbor is a CM who is on "park duty" for hurricanes. She has to stay onsite at one of the resorts during storms, and we only live a couple of miles from the parks.
