wwyd - school related

Personally, I think some are missing the POINT here. If I write a note excusing my son from gym for 1 day no matter what the reason is, it damn well better be honored.

On the other hand I have to question if the child handed the note in at all.

In some districts no it would not be honored because it has to be a medical/Dr note. Yes they can and do set parameters around such things (meaning not honoring a parent note and requiring a medical one).

If all it needed was a parents note to get out of gym class half the kids in school would never take a class!

It takes a medical reason here with a DR note to get out of gym class. If you didn't have a medical reason he would have had to take gym class.

If it was so darn important why didn't you take him out of school for the hour?

As far as the call, when did you send the note? A day or two ahead of the class? I hope your son didn't hand it to the teacher as he went in for the class, if so of course he couldn't call you, he is in class.

You should have sent the note in and talked to the principal ahead of the class by at least a day or two since this wan't an emergency that came up that morning.

Not being difficult here but I beg to differ. A parents note to excuse a child from gym takes precedence. I would love to see otherwise. The class may need to be made up, yes.

I said 1 class nothing more.

Just to be clear as I already said, I am not talking about the situation at hand. Just an in general parent sending in a note to excuse child from gym.

Honestly, I wouldn't send in a note based on the OP.

And who is going to keep track? Do you have any idea how many times kids would do this. A parents note does not get you out of gym here. If you are in school you are expected to participate.

It doesn't even work in elementary school.

At the school my friend teaches at the note would have to be from a doctor with a valid medical reason.

When I was in school, it was the same. Heck, I needed the note even though I had a broken wrist which was pretty dang obvious due to the cast.

Others have also spoken up that it is that way at their schools. So I don't see why you keep arguing the idea that it happens.

You're going to have to show me those school guidelines.

Well you would have to take that up with your child's school if they have such a policy. There is no point in arguing about it here. You would need to be prepared however to lose your fight. If the school has a defined rule around what is required to miss class it is expected you will honor it if you choose to have your child attend that school.

In googling I saw several school handbooks come up with this policy..some required it for any misses, some required it for a certain number..etc.

My son is a severe asthmatic there are days he could attend school but not gym. If a certain amount of days needed to be excused yes a doctors note is needed, 1 day no.

No, sorry. I am the parent and if I say my son isn't playing gym, he isn't. No special snowflakes here no special treatment its really plain and simple.

My kid is also quite asthmatic. In his case, the issue is not physical activities but outdoor activities. His allergist is able to write a note stating that he should be able to stay indoors at his own or his mother's request. However, we still need the note in the first place.

What school?

Just because you school says that, it doesn't mean all of them do!

Our school district does not let your child sit out of gym class without a DR's note. A parent can not excuse a child from gym.

That isn't my school but every school that I can find a guideline on states similar.

Seriously, as a parent if you send your child to school with a note stating that your child can not participate in gym that day (1 day) and they make your child participate anyway you aren't going to raise holy hell?

Not that anyone should feel like they have to "show you" here are some schools that require a Dr note for missing PE

(under Accident/Illness)

(under PE Reminders..they will excuse if the child enters feeling ill but anything else requires Dr note)

There are plenty of others..some will take a parent note but will require make up of the class. Some will not take one at all. Some will take a parent note for 1 time in the year..anything else after requires a Dr note..etc. 3 days or more in general requires a Dr note to be excused.

Another example, happened this year with my youngest. He woke up and had pain in his lower quadrant, likely a pulled muscle but I couldn't rule out a hernia. There was no way he was playing gym that day and he had a dr appointment that afternoon. I sent in a note - you wouldn't?

I disagree that a parents note would be ignored.
