7 flights, 6 hotels, 1 cruise ship and a major stuff up...brace yourself UPDATE!

Following along and enjoying so far. Thanks for sharing with us.

We regularly have to stay in cabins in caravan parks in Australia for dancing competitions and visiting family and I am constantly shocked at how expensive it is. I feel the same as you Marvel, it's much cheaper to go to the US, if those pesky flights would be a bit cheaper :rotfl2:

looked at doing 1 week for 2 people to Adelaide & wineries = $3000...I dont think so!:sad2:

and dont we love our Taco bell:banana:

Or New Zealand i am stunned at the prices over there as well :(

You know I've never been to NZ. I was left behind when the rest of the family went, and now everyone else has been but me :(
Its all a bit irrelevant to the talk of prices I know....

I must admit I am dreading the cost of my next vacation - I am planning to go to the Boxing Day test in Melbourne..!!! I just know that will cost a bomb, and it will only be for a few days!! We could probably do Disneyland for a week for that cost!!

We went to Melb in January for 3 nights and it cost us thousands. The dearest part is the accom and the FOOD!!!!!!

we wanted to have a break in Lorne for a long weekend, this is in winter mind you and they wanted nearly $400 per night, minimum two nights at a 'resort' there

Needless to say that money went straight to the next Disney trip!

And as for the food and drink, almost every time we go past a vending machine the kids mention that machines at WDW where you can get a drink for $1 or $2 whilst waiting for the bus at Blizzard Beach ! And even inside disney the water and soda is still cheaper than the food courts here!

Everybody says that accommodation in NYC is expensive (and it is..) but I gave myself a little exercise to find accommodation inu the centre of Sydney that would fit our family of five. Nothing under $800, makes the doubletree suites look cheap at $400 per night!

To be fair, I didn't look that hard and I could probably get two rooms for less than that.

DH and I have a work function in the city next week and he wants to stay in, but I just can't spend $300 for a bed for the night when we can drive home, takes about 40mins. (Means no drinking though :(

But to any American lurkers out there - Australia really is a great place to visit!

if you want to drink as we do at functions, its cheaper to get a cab home..may be $60..but that's so much less than a room cost......catch the train in, cab home:thumbsup2

DH and I stayed in the city back in 2007 and the accom then was over $400 a night.
I said the same thing to my DH about NY accom, if you compare it to Sydney or Melbourne the prices are not much different.

So yeah, any lurkers, Australia is a great place to visit, BYO tent

Even camping is expensive, last year we paid over 700 for a patch of grass for a week! (And then left three days early, because it bucketed down for four days and was no sign of clearing! Came home sold the camping gear!

My DH knows I don't camp.
I imagine camping to be men with beards sitting around the fire toasting hotdogs, young kids wittling sticks into spears and women bathing the kids in the filthy river :rotfl:

Camping is not my thing ;) I won't even do a day visit to see people who are camping...

This might sound weird, even though we are going to California in April I am already thinking of a trip after that to Disneyworld and where we would stay. Hence my questions about Bonnett Creek? Is that weird??

Nope, not weird at all. Our next cruise is Dec '13 and I'm already researching a group trip mid '15 :lmao:

No, not sad at all - my thinking is that you've always got to have something to look forward to. I keep getting little comments like "oh, you must be doing alright" or "you spoil your kids". No, we don't spoil our kids, we are teachng them that if you work hard and save your money you can do fun things. By the way, I'm a teacher's aide/ school admin officer and DH is a council worker, so we aren't exactly rolling around naked in our spare cash for fun when the kids go to bed!:scared1:

You know, I hate that when I get it said to me  The DL/DCL trip was the biggest and most expensive we've ever done (we usually camp in the middle of nowhere). It took me almost a year of non-stop saving plus cutting back on other things to achieve it. We don't smoke or gamble. I don't drink and DH buys a carton of beer every couple of weeks, we hardly eat out etc, yet all I hear is "you're rich". I'm sick of prefacing everything I say about our holiday (plus the next one) with "we're saving really hard...". I think it's all about making choices and if people don't like it then they should shut up.

Ok. Rant over popcorn:: Back to reading.
