Medications in original containers?

Do medications REALLY have to be in the original containers? We purchase through the mail and receive 3 months worth at a time and the containers are HUGE? Anyone have any issues if they are just in the regular 'days of the week' containers?

When I travel I just use the "day of the week" containers. Never had a problem.

Nope, it's a common misconception that medications must remain in their original labeled Rx bottles when traveling. TSA doesn't care. However, I do strongly recommend that you pack all medications in your carry-on, not checked baggage. In the unlikely event a bag is lost or delayed, you won't have to worry about meds.

Yes. It is illegal in Florida to transport controlled substances in a non prescription bottle. Don't risk it.

In Florida, it is illegal to transport certain meds outside of their containers. I am absolutely certain of this. Don't risk it.

We have a lot of medications and always pack them in the day of the week containers. HOWEVER, I always bring the pharmacy print out of the prescriptions -- which are just flat sheets and don't take up much room.

If you used a brick and mortar pharmacy I would recommend you call and get "travel size" containers with the Rx label placed on them and filled with the correct medication.

If you are cruising you are presumably leaving the US, and you will have to pass through US Customs to return. It's possible that they could detain you due to the fact that your medications are not in the original containers. I do not know if you are traveling through Florida, which does have a very stringent law regarding prescription medications.

You might want to contact your mail order pharmacy and see if they can provide the same or similar service.

Ah yes, but believe me, US Customs DOES care. And I will agree with ONLY in your carry-on, NEVER in checked baggage of any form.

What they really want is the *label* on the original container, not the container itself. At CVS, I was able to buy a package of several small ziploc bags (really small, like 2x3"). I then went to the printout that the pharmacy gave me with my prescriptions, and there was an extra printout with a sticky back that I was able to peel off and put on the baggie. It looks just like the label on the original container. The baggies are WAY easier to transport & fit in my carryon.

If your pharmacy doesn't automatically give you the extra label, I'm sure they would if you asked them.

I have been on 5 Disney Cruises and never once brought the bottles. I just write down on a sheet of paper what they are. But it has never been an issue.

My family has never had an issue with the days container, but if you have heavily controlled substances I would be sure to have the actual bottle, or at least the label.

Unless the law has changed, scheduled substances need to be in the original containers (for the most part these are narcotic pain relievers). Other medications can be in the container of your choice.

HOWEVER, please write down the NAME and DOSE of each of your prescriptions. In the event of an emergency, I promise that neither you nor your significant other will remember them. It is totally frustrating to the doc to hear that you take your "heart pill" and "stomach pill."....or to be given a baggie of what could pass for Halloween candy based on the colors.

Darn - never knew about this and how many times I've gone to FL. I always put what's needed in a small ziplock bag. I did once wondered what if...

It is gonna depend on the meds: pain/allergy(for making drugs) meds might be an issue. Other meds maybe not. To be safe, I would have original bottles or scripts with me.

I will give you another example: DH is currently stationed in Japan. Family came to visit. Need prescription and note from dr for all meds due to strict drug laws here. Do not bring over the counter meds with caffeine in them. Who knew.
