question about disney in january

We are all booked and ready for our jan trip.. this will be our first trip in january, living in summer weather all year long we are hoping to get some cool weather and won't miss going in the pool much. my question is this.. how cold can it get? my sister in law was there last year and told me they had to buy jackets and even gloves!! can it get that bad?

Last January was BRUTALLY cold!! We go every year for the marathon, and usually it really isn't too bad.... couple pairs of jeans, some sweatshirts and a jacket would be plenty. But last year was out of the ordinary, we wore multiple layers, coats, hats, gloves, the whole works. I would recommend bringing winter gear just to be on the safe side. It will save you from having to shop for it once you get there.

We have been there in January when they had frost, so it was very cold. We always take our winter coats with us when doing Disney in January and February. We have also had 80 degree weather in January. One of our family members made a quick trip to Walmart to get some shorts since we didn't expect it to be that warm.

So you never know what you'll get until you get closer to your trip date.

Weather in January can be very iffy. I would pack a little of everything from shorts/t shirts to jeans/sweatshirts as the weather can change from one day to the next.

Definitely pay attention to the local weather forecast in the days prior to your trip. If you're coming from a really cold climate, even the "cold" temps will be mild compared to what you left behind "back home." For me, personally, after living in Maine for the last 4 1/2 years, I can't wait to get back to Florida's "cold" for a week!

ETA: The PP makes a VERY good point... just because it's cold one day definitely does not mean it will be cold like that every day. It's very common to have big temp changes from one day to the next!

I'm planning to pack for all sorts of weather for January, but my winter gear is pretty limited since I'm a cold weather person to start with... My standard winter outfit is a t-shirt, jeans, hoodie, light gloves, and a scarf if necessary. I'll bring some shorts for warmer days. I'm even bringing my swim clothes - if I get a good water park day, I'm going for it!

Oh yes. We've been in January several times and once it was mild, but another time we were in our winter gear(coats, hats, scarves and gloves) huddling around those big outdoor heaters they put out in DTD. Brrrrrr.......!

We love it there no matter the weather. Have a blast!

Last year the week leading up to Marathon Weekend was the coldest we've ever experienced in WDW. It was in the low 30s in the evening and at night and made being at The Osborne Lights feel like we were at Christmas in NYC. We had the $1 "throwaway" gloves for the Marathon races packed thank goodness. We wore the same jeans sweatshirts and scarves for a few days because it was the warmest we had.
3 days later it was beautifully warm and we were swimming. We will be there again this year for Marathon Weekend as well and will bring warm AND cool clothes for sure!

I have a picture of a picnic table at Animal Kingdom, January 2010. My daughter wrote: 1-7-10 WDW in the frost on the table. If I could figure out how to insert pictures I would post it here. We were COLD most of our trip. And, we are from Upstate NY where temps in the 'teens are not unusual!

Check the weather forecast and don't hesitate to take hats, gloves and plenty of layers!

Oops, just noticed you are from the DR. Probably not hats/gloves in your wardrobe! You may need to plan on purchasing some if the weather repeats what we and your sister in law experienced.

I think you have your years mixed up. The entire marathon weekend was high 70s and sunny.

The weekend was, but the Mon, and Tuesday before it were bitterly cold~

The only time we've been in January, the weather was perfect - 70s during the day and a little cooler in the evenings. We didn't even have to wear jackets or sweatshirts. that was 2008, I think. We were there last November and a couple of nights were freezing - 40s in Florida seem much colder than 40s in Colorado.

I've been on several winter trips with morning temps in the 30s. I've lived in Massachusetts my entire life and am used to cold temps. Florida 30s feel colder to me than in MA. I think it is the humidity. FL 30s are a damp, bone chilling cold.

But the best weather I have ever had on a trip was a January trip so you really never know what the winter months might bring. Best to have layers of clothes you can wear as needed.

It can definitely get really cold. Last year we were at Disney from Feb 4-14 and the first half was gorgeous but the second half was in the 30s and 40s. We're Floridians so that was really really cold to us. We had hats, gloves and 3 layers of clothing on .

But in my mind, it can't be worse than the weather I'd be having home. I live in Canada, where we have 6 months snow!

3 yrs ago Florida had a huge cold snap that lasted 3 weeks, and it was colder then at home! But then I live in BC

We went last year Jan 21-28th and the weather was beautiful! Highs were in the 70's and low did not get really bad. We had to start our day with light jackets but by noon we were peeling them off! We also did enjoy the pool in the afternoons. I am hoping for another "warm" week when we go again this January.

We have been to WDW only once in January back in 2009. It was the last week of January first few days of February. We were so fortunate. The weather for the first six days was sunny and in the upper 70's and even a low 80's on one of the days. Our last full day it was rainy and in the upper 50's, but we still had a great time.

I should say when we left Cleveland to head down to WDW it was -4 (you read that correctly) and we arrived in Orlando to 76 degrees. The warmest day of the week when it hit the low 80's we were sitting pool side when my neighbor sent me a text showing her husband with his snow blower cleaning our driveway for us. We were hit back home with 16 inches of snow in 24 hours. I have to admit we sent a picture back of us with a nice smile, a cold softdrink, and us sitting on a chair soaking in the sun by the pool.
