Chances of them accomodating 5 at a 4-person reservation?

I made our family reservations at the 180-day mark like a good girl - for 4 people - and just found out that our daughter in college may be able to join us for a few days of the trip.

Her dates are not flexible at all because a specific window just opened up in her college schedule to allow the trip. The time she would join us includes two hard-to-get character meals: a breakfast at Tusker House, and a dinner at Chef Mickey's. Of course, we're now just a month away from the trip, and these restaurants show no availability for a party of 5. Or any other party size, for that matter.

Have any of you had this happen and just show up with the extra person? I am tempted for us to show up, and then if they cannot accomodate us, I would be willing to sit out while the rest of the family eats. Just wondering if we should even try . . .

Thanks in advance for any input! :)

Yes, we had our entire 9 days of adrs booked and my parents decided to join us. We tried to change them and were told no availability, so we just showed up with 7, and all 9 had no problem. We went to ohana dinner, chef Mickey, tucker house, crystal palace, h&v, 1900 of dinner, etc. So even the hard to book ones didn't have a problem. Another trip my DHs cousin joined us and we had no problem that night either at ohana.

There is always a chance that they will turn the extra person away. So be prepared for that, but otherwise I'd try. Just get there a bit early and prepare to maybe wait a bit longer than your ressie time. I see this question pop up all the time here and answers go both ways, but it never hurts to try. Worse case, they tell you no can do. Good Luck.

Thank you for sharing your story . . . that's very encouraging! Glad it worked out so well for you. :goodvibes

Thank You for asking this question. I have the same exact problem. I made all of our reservations as soon as I was able for the 4 of us. We are a family of 5, but the oldest is in college and said she would not be able to join us. Well now things have changed and she can travel with us. I was able to change all but 2 of our reservations. We will try to go with 5 and if they say no, my husband will go back to the room for a break. Good Luck to you, I hope it works out.pixiedust:

Oh thank you! Best wishes to you as well. Yay for our college kids being able to join us, right?!

I think many places will be able to accommodate you. But don't be surprised if some can't. Going from 4 to 5 will require a different table entirely, so much harder to accommodate than if you were going from, say, 5 to 6.

Also a tip I got from a CM (currently in same situation with SIL & BIL) call 48 hours before because people think the cancellation policy is 48 hours and not 24. Also they stated CMs are way more understanding than the computers ;)

I've been turned away going from a 4 to a 6 and from a 6 to an 8...but I've also been accomodated and I've also seen others turned away or accomodated. You won't really know until you try. The issue is you're going up a table size by going from 4 to 5 ... i.e. my 4 to 6 issue is pretty much identical. Still- I'd try and I'd also keep stalking the site for openings. It's very common for thing w/CC guars to open up just before travel as people finalize their plans.

Good tips, everybody . . . I'll call at the 48 hour mark, and otherwise will just try and hope for the best.

Thank you, all! :)
