DISBoards did not have a virus. There was a link somewhere on DISBoards, probably to a photo, that pointed to an infected server or file on another site. The site with the photo could have been legit, clean, and family friendly, but sharing space on an infected server.
If you think of a server like a building, you start to get the picture. Sites are like apartments. If one site is infected with a virus or malware, it can spread to the other sites on that server just as roaches can spread from one apartment to another, even if you keep your apartment spotless and spray for bugs daily.
Links are like an invitation to visit an apartment. If you click on the link, invitation accepted and off to visit you go. Once there, you're fair game for the virus or malware. Just like if you visit Messy's apartment, you may pick up a few roaches by accident and transfer them to your home, even though you don't live in Messy's building. YUK!
That's why you keep your anti-virus and anti-malware software up to date and scan frequently. And why you keep external backups of important files.
If you ever get that message, or a warning that the site you're about to access has or is linked to a site that has dangerous files, close your browser and run your anti-virus and anti-malware software. It's better to be safe than sorry! Way to go, MQ!
Removing my data security badge and returning to normal life, whatever that's supposed to be!
So right you are, a virus can be picked up any where. I have had to have that fixed so many times.
