Buying in bulk( BJS Sam's Costco)

Sams. Not in bulk, but love the book and magazine prices.
Nice quality meat, also.

We have both a Costco and a Sam's Club membership. We also have 4 major grocery stores with a 5-7 minute drive.

Costco and Sam's are FAR cheaper on a lot of things, even if they are on sale elsewhere. Costco sells eggs in a two pack of 18 eggs each for only $3.89. The grocery stores around here charge $2.00 for just 1 dozen eggs. We pay $1.67 a gallon for 1% or 2% milk at Costco. The grocery stores around here can't touch that.

We also buy a lot of meat there, toilet paper, paper towels, half and half, yogurt, bread, cheesecakes or regular cakes from their bakery, pizzas and a bunch of other stuff.

At Sam's I buy their bread, sugar-free flavored syrups for coffee, k-cups,giant boxes of cereal and gas.

Nothing anymore. Used to go to Price Club (remember them?) and Sam's Club, because we didn't have any Walmarts in California. Now I can get sane sizes of products at Walmart for about the same price per item per ounce without buying the year's supply size.

Speaking of Costco, I wonder what's up with the class action suit against them......the miffed members who found a LOT of items were cheaper at Walmart, and you don't have to pay a membership fee.

I would pay 3 times the amount Costco charges for membership to be able to stay out of Walmart. I don't know any miffed members myself, everyone I know is very happy there. THey actually have very NICE and HELPFUL people. unlike our scummy Walmart.

Meat (better quality than normal grocery stores, and we like to buy big tenderloins or tri-tips and cut our own steaks)
Milk
Butter
Eggs
Bacon
Bagged shredded cheese
Produce (potatoes, strawberries, bagged salad, fresh veg, etc)
Coffee
Snacks for the kids for school
Canned veggies and tomatoes
Pasta, rice, etc
Pancake syrup
Organic boxed broth/stock
Microwave popcorn
Trash bags
Household products like toilet paper, cleaners, etc
Prescriptions (I take 2 meds monthly for my seizure disorder and the savings are HUGE! A $45 Rx at Costco is $250 a month at Walgreens - literally - I checked.)

We totally get our money's worth out of our Costco membership, but then we feed 5 in our immediate family, plus spares (friends, teenagers, etc)

Well, I AM in California, and Walmart is still relatively new here. And about 3 years ago they started building Super Walmarts. And literally 2 weeks ago they opened Walmart Neighborhood Stores here. Went to one this past weekend, awesome.
All our Walmarts are new, clean, and as a town with 3 recently closed Air Force Bases/Army Base, Walmart hires a lot of retired military to work in the stores. All you hear is "may I help you sir ma'am.......how are you sir ma'am".........etc". Clearly different than the Walmarts I have been in in Texas and Illionis as far as age....(however, I am talking small towns, where a lot of folks go to Walmart just to hang out when they aren't at high school football games):goodvibes

I can't find anything about a class action regarding prices...can you please provide a link to that class action? I have a very very hard time believing people are suing (and that it made it to a class action) over prices being higher than other places.

Not ignoring you. Heading out to dinner now. Did a quick search and found 35+ lawsuits in Sacramento County Superior Court ALONE! :crazy2: Will pull up the abstracts later. Googling is a mess, but I guess big corporations are the targets of a lot of lawsuits...will sort through later.

Sam's

Meat
Laundry items
Paper goods
Some snack items
Some frozen items, there is a breakfast sandwich the my husband really likes
Books
Occasionally hygiene items, razor blades, etc

We go to Sam's for business necessities. Ziploc bags by the case, bubble wrap, printer paper and garlic. Also canned cat food.

My hubby and I were debating on joining a warehouse club. In fact, I recently posted about this on the Budget board. I think we have decided things are cheaper at Walmart and we don't have the storage space to buy in bulk, anyway. I posted on my blog about it, too when we were trying to make the decision. See the link in my signature if you are interested on why it might not be worth it to join a warehouse club.

I definitely this it is, especially if you have a family!

We typically buy:
TP/PT
Dish Soap
PB (Husband eats wayyy too much of it...:rolleyes1)
Cereal
Meats (Seafood, Beef, Pork, Chicken, etc.. whatever we need)
Spring Salad Mix
Romaine Hearts
Deli Meats/Cheeses
Cheez-Its/Goldfish/ ect - some sort of snack food
Books/DVDs when wanted and/or needed.
Whole Pizzas from the Concession stand (cheap and delicious! We love the Supreme)

Time is money. If I can shop less, it is worth it to me. We both work full time and we value what little free time we have. There are some things that are great deals, and BJS lets you stack coupons on top of their coupons. So we both save money and time. Both of which are important to us. In order to save money at a warehouse club, you have to shop smart and stick to your list.

Been a Costco member since 1985

I go every week:
toilet paper
paper towels
kitty litter
tomato sauce
black beans
cereal
toothpaste
mouthwash
eye drops
Prilosec
vitamins and a lot of supplements
some candy
chicken stock
chips for DD
bell peppers.....every week for DS
cucumbers ....every week for DS..........I find because of the turnover, their fruits and vegetables are much fresher
meats
sourdough bread
Clorox wipes
laundry detergent
dish soap.........both liquid and for the dishwasher

I'm sure there is a lot more
Love their hot dogs at the counter and the chicken bake
and whenever Popcornopolis and caramel apple people are there, we buy.

Also buy computer paper
printer cartridges

They are great about returns.

I currently do BJ's. You can great deals if you can match one of their coupons with a Manu coupon. Crest toothpaste is individual in the box f I've. You cn use multiple Manu coupons and a BJ's for a great deal.

I have debated joint Costco instead when my BJ's runs out but we will see.
