You are suppose to go to your supervisor and ask for the time off before the actual dates. My husband asks about a month before unless it is an emergency.

If he needs a mental health day (this would only be a one day thing), he calls in sick.

He does not have sick time at his job and his vacation time is dictated by his boss. He closes the shop one week per year and changes it depending on when he wants. All our vacations are usually a no pay week for us.

Unless its an emergency, vacation has to be arranged ahead of time. Usually, I ask for the time off as soon as I know I'm going to need it. Most people would have vacation time, or other paid time off, to use for the missed work hours. Some places may not offer paid time off and the time would be unpaid.

Most jobs will fire you if you don't ask for time off in advance.

Let your boss know as soon as possible that you won't be available to work that day. That can be a month in advance, a year in advance, or even an hour in advance. Your boss will then tell you what your options are. And yes, one of those options is "be here or you're fired". This can happen even if you're asking way in advance. Before you worry, that doesn't happen often and would be extreme.

I work the elections each year and I can speak for my state but it is likely similar in other states. You generally have 2 options..one is to request an early ballot be mailed to you. You receive it and vote and mail it back. Or you can find out through your city/county when and where early voting is (at a physically location) and go there. Depending on when you are going in relation to voting day might determine what one is the best option for you.

Here "early ballot" and absentee ballot are one in the same.

Contact your county clerk. If you have a phone book, it will be listed in there. If no, simply google <name of county> county, <state> clerk. You should be able to find a phone number there.

Ask them what their procedures are for "absentee balloting" (that's what it's called in my state). If they don't understand, tell them you'll be out of town on election day, but want to vote. They'll tell you what you need to do.

As others have noted there are options. I travel extensively for work so I am generally not in town when it comes to voting. Planning ahead is required though.

Very true as you often need to request the early/absentee ballot by a certain date and/or have to get it in the mail by a certain date for it to arrive in time.

My DH and I always try to vote "early". I HATE the line at the polls.

This year DD will need an absentee ballot - as she is in college. She will be home in 2 weeks - and will need to sing by the town hall to handle the paperwork to have it sent to her.

We are sending for a ballot by mail instead of going to the polls this year. We get back from Disney late on Nov. 4, and on the 6th, I will likely still be up to my eyeballs in laundry and mail. I don't want to have to mess with long lines at the polls that day, but I still want my vote to be counted.

NC has early voting. I will be voting in Oct. since I will be at the World on the real voting day.

Otherwise you sign up for voting absentee by mail.

Here in California, we can register to vote as permanent absentee voters, which is just "vote by mail". It sure beats going to a polling place.

What card? In my state, I have to show ID (which I use DL). If you don't have an ID, I think a poll worker can vouch for you.
