Can my husband and son fish with their own equipment in some of the streams around the fort or do they have to go to the lake?
We arrive at the Fort in 8 days! Our first stay in one of the cabins. So excited!

Yes, they can bring their own poles and fish in the canals around the Fort. Just know that it is catch and release.
You can not fish in the lake unless you are on a boat.

not sure if you've stayed on the campgrounds before but we just stayed at the cabins for our first time last weekend. they were awesome. one suggestion if you aren't aware already but i highly recommend renting a golf cart to navigate around FW. oober convenient. we rented onsite since it was just the weekend and Disney only charged us 1 day even though it was 1.5 days but there are offsite rentals that are more cost effective.

Actually, you can fish in the lake from the shore, just not from the pier. It is hard to cast out farther than the weeds. Bay Lake is full of hydrilla. Also, you can't just rent a boat and fish - you have to sign up for the fishing excursion. We have done the excursion 3 times - twice last year. Each time we caught about 25 bass. It was fun, but I think pretty overpriced. One time this summer we had a great CM guide - Timothy. He interacted so well with the kids - our grandboys are 5, 7, & 9 years old. We had a blast and scheduled a second trip. We were supposed to get Timothy again, but he was assigned elsewhere. The second CM was not engaged at all, and he couldn't seem to wait to return to home base. He didn't even bother to learn our names. We actually wrote Disney about the disappointing second trip and they refunded our money (very kind of them).

Anyway, we bring our poles and fish the canals with little to show for it.

Thank you all for your replies.

This will be our first stay at the Fort and we'll be in a cabin. We have rented a golf cart :)

I figure the results will be disappointing fishing in the canals. I'm just passing on the info to my husband (since I don't fish!). He thought the excursions seemed too pricey but I'll let him make that call.

Thanks so much...7 days til we arrive...not sure whi is more excited, me or the kids!?!?!

How much is the excursion?

It is $270 for 2 hours & $455 for 4 hours. If you are a DVC member, have an annual pass, or Disney VISA card there is a 15% discount. They provide the boat, guide, fishing tackle, and bait. They have a cooler with drinks. It is catch and release.

There is also a 20% coupon in the back of the Birmbaums Guide to Disney. We are not staying at the Fort, but we booked the fishing excursion leaving from Yatch Club resort.

Have fun either way you decide.
My kids were fine with the canals and lake side.:thumbsup2
They had more fun chasing frogs.:rotfl2:
