QOTD Wednesday, September 12, 2012: It's Woo Hoo Wednesday! Give yourself a big "woo hoo" for helping yourself to be healthy and share something that you did this week to help you with your goals. Hopefully you don't feel like you've been on the wildest ride in the wilderness!;)
Not sure if it's a BIG Woo Hoo but I ran last night even though I felt like just sitting on the couch? ;-)
I am PUSHING myself this week to make sure I exercise even though it's getting dark earlier outside. Tonight is just Wii Zumba after work but I told my husband to not let me eat a THING for dinner until I do Zumba! Once I eat dinner, it's like my brain thinks it's time to veg out.
My husband's a good one- he said he'd have it all set on the TV so I'd hear blaring Zumba music when I walked through the door - just have to change my clothes and I'll be set to go. :)

I'm trying to concentrate on getting more exercise...not for a single longer period of time, but more times during the course of the day. Attempting to increase my overall steps to 15000 by the end of the month. My last 2 days have been 11075 and 11966, so I'm on my way. Woo Hoo!
And I signed up for a water Zumba class that starts on Sept 24
:thumbsup2

Its been a crazy week with back to school and my husband on vacation. I got a run/walk in this AM for the first time since Sunday. I couldn't run the entire time during the run intervals but I had my furthest distance & fastest time since I started C25K. I did W5D1 today. The 5 min intervals are really tough but I'm getting better every day. I have been logging my food in MFP and trying to make good choices. Woo hoo!

Hi all! Sorry I've been MIA. We lost a wonderful young man here in our community during service in Afghanistan and I've been very distracted. I'm so sick of the anger and hatred that is out there. They brought him home last night and it was ironic to have him come home on 9/11. I try not to get too consumed by the memorials of that day but being a New Yorker it hits so close to home....

So very, very sad and tragic. My heart and prayers go out to the family of that young man and to your community. It just all seems to useless.

Anywho.....life goes on and we need to enjoy the blessings that life gives us on a daily basis, find the joy and beauty around us, and validate and express our love for those in our lives so....we move on.

So right.... but easier to do some days than others, right??

I am doing okay on my eating this week so far. Now, I need to get my exercise worked back into this. We have a houseload of company coming this weekend so I'm thinking I'm going to have to give myself a little latitude there and start a routine next week. Hope everyone is doing well!!!! :)

Cut yourself some slack, but have a plan ready for when the company is gone!

Howdy folks!

Howdy friend!!

I baked up some healthier treats for the kids (for after-school snacking and school break time) and resisted most of them myself! Although I must admit I did indulge in one of the breakfast cookies. It was originally a "light" recipe that I created, but I made it for the kids without the Splenda (used molasses instead) and with shredded wheat crumbs and cornflake crumbs instead of the high fiber cereal I usually make them with. But they were still tasty and a decent treat for about 2 points. WOOHOO!!:thumbsup2

Thanks that recipe sounds yummy! Can't wait to try it! :goodvibes

I will be back later with some more replies. I'm in the Pacific Time Zone and didn't get a chance to post the QOTD until I returned from the gym this morning so am starting out a little late today. Sorry! :flower3:

No worries! The gym is MUCH more important!

***********

Ready for my lunch break! Took the back door of the garage off the hinges to lay it down to paint it and discovered that the wood core at the bottom was rotted, so in addition to painting it, I will need to find something to fill it. I would like to use some of that spray-in expanding foam, but we don't have any on hand and I want to do this for no $$, so I will find a scrap of pressure treated and cut it down and glue it in I guess. Maybe add some caulking and call it good! Found TWO MORE full cans of Rustoleum spray and FOUR tubes of white caulk! Hopefully the caulk is still good. I am guesstimating that this stuff has been languishing in the basement for a good 7-10 years!

Anyhooo... opened an old can of paint (leftover from a project at school in 2004!!) to paint that door in the garage and was pleased to find it in perfect condition. A quick mixing and it was ready to go. It is a pleasant brown color (Hoot Owl). Won't be enough to paint the walls and such in the garage, as I was thinking, but it will be enough to do this door plus the door from the garage into the mudroom. Coat number one is done on the garage door for now.

Hmmm.... what's for lunch? :confused3 THere is the salad stuff that I didn't eat yesterday, plus a cold rotisserie chicken I got on sale. Probably make a salad with that stuff for DH and myself.

What is everyone else having for lunch? Do you have the same thing every day to make it easy, or do you like to mix it up? Any "strange but delicious" concotions you make yourself? Do you have trouble brown-bagging it? Just curious.

Time to hang a load of wash and make lunch!

I went to Zumba last night even though I was feeling rather sluggish but after the first 10 or mins I pushed to my normal higher rate of moving and got in 6898 steps.. but I crashed at 8:30 for the night..

TTYL.........................P

I mostly brown bag it - and hate it! most of the time I struggle with Low point lunches that pack up well in my lunch box - I work for a big company and yes there are fridges but too many in and out open and shut the door too feel safe leaving it there and a ice pack doesn't feel like it does any good when I put in my lunch box.. like today I had a lean pocket for 8 points and some cut veggies and an apple - however I don't feel full. but am having shepard's pie for dinner so need to have 12 points for that.. Oh well I'll just be drinking extra water and filling up that way..

QOTD-WOOHOO WEDNESDAY
I am saving all my bonus points (following WW) this week so I have a wee safety net for the weekend when I'm less in control of what I'm eating and hope that will still give me a loss at weigh-in:thumbsup2 In the past I wouldn't have planned ahead so I feel I'm making progress:)

Pamela I normally make lunch at home so I vary it depending on whats to hand but my favourite low point lunch is my curried carrot soup (over on the recipe thread for anyone who's interested) or chicken stir fry with either noodles or tortilla wrap if I have more points to spare!

Did you make the fish cakes? Got a recipe to share??

Sure do! We actually got it off the Food Network website and made some adjustments for what we had (we didn't have trout) and substituted some unhealthy items for better ones.

Here's the recipe:

Trout Cakes w/lemon:

1 1/2 cups flaked smoked trout (We used leftover catfish and sacalay from our last fishing trip)
2 tablespoons chopped green onion
2 teaspoons coarsely chopped drained capers
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1/4 cup whipping cream
(Used 1% milk instead and worked just fine.)
1 cup panko bread crumbs (pulsed in blender for couple seconds), divided (Didn't have Panko so just used regular bread crumbs)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus more as needed

Combine trout, onion, capers, lemon peel, pepper and salt in medium bowl. Stir in egg, cream (or milk) and 1/2 cup bread crumbs to blend. Form mixture into 8 (1/2-inch thick) cakes. Place remaining bread crumbs in shallow dish then roll cakes in bread crumbs, coating completely. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in large skillet over medium heat. Working in batches cook fish cakes until golden brown about 3 minutes per side. Add more oil, as necessary, then serve with horseradish cream.

Horseradish Cream:

1 cup sour cream (We use lite)
2 tablespoons grated fresh or prepared horseradish
1/8 teaspoon paprika
1/8 cup chopped chives
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

In a medium serving bowl, combine sour cream, horseradish, paprika, chives, garlic, salt and pepper until blended.

You can probably even cut the Horseradish cream recipe in half since it made more than enough and a little on the fish cake goes a long way. The sauce does mellow out the longer it sits though.

We made a side of boiled asparagus with a little butter, salt and pepper and were plenty satisfied. Definitely wouldn't mind having it again. :goodvibes

Back later to answer the QOTD!!

Is it too late to join? I was going to sign up last week but was feeling so sick I really thought I would end up joining and then not finishing and end up embarrassed. However, I'm hoping I've got my medical issues sorted out so maybe I will have the energy and commitment after all?

The timing of this challenge would be perfect for me. I'm running in the wine and dine half (1st ever race) on nov 10 and I'm in y best friends wedding on nov 24 and I REALLY want to run fast and make sure I fit into the bridesmaid dress. The store clerk seemed a little skeptical that I ordered exactly the size that fit me. Apparently she thinks I'm planning to gain weight. It's been hard to lose while training and running but honestly, that's because of my mental "I just ran a lot I deserve a treat" attitude. I know I can lose when I stay focused, committed and accountable so maybe this thread can help me with that! I lost a few pounds over the summer because I knew it would help with some aches and pains (aka knees) while running but now that they feel pretty good I'm less motivated. :(

Thanks for support all. Today is slightly better. I feigned illness and went to work at noon. I used my "free time" to go to the grocery store this morning. Since we were supposed to be leaving tomorrow, I didn't buy any groceries, so we really needed food. I put the perishables away and then headed on to work. As for the postponement, we moved it to Dec 9th. We were planning on doing a pop down to see fantasyland and the christmas stuff, but we will now make it a full trip (maybe even a night or two over at Universal to see their christmas with front of the line). Last year's december trip was 4 hours long because of a family emergency, so it is a redo of two trips now. :rolleyes1

Healthy THIS week? Not so much. I did go for my C25K run, but I have been putting off the next one. Yesterday, I was WAAY over calories and today I brought a large bag of organic popcorn to work. It should have lasted me a week, but I finished it all! So I am already over calories today. Oops!

Tomorrow is a new day though. I will eat well and run! :dance3:

Hello everyone! I am on my iPad so my post is severely abbreviated. My internet has been out since MID JUNE! I was in Ireland and we had a huge flood here in MN, and things aren't quite back to normal yet. They have assured me for days "tomorrow" it will be fixed. Grrrr!

On Monday I got a sports massage for this IT band issue I'm having, and I stopped by the Weight Watchers new office to weigh in :eek: and kind of re-commit. I hadn't been tracking all summer! :scared1: My weight really freaked me out, but today is the first day ive actually tracked. I bought a new workout outfit in a bigger size thinking it would be very roomy and comfortable. I tried it on and it barely fits!!!!! Like, I won't wear it until I lose 5 or so lbs. Holy cow! Weight Watchers also has their version of a body Bugg type device that tells you how many activity points you earn in a day. At only $39 I decided to try it. As zoo. As my internet is back on I can hook it up. :headache: My body Bugg is great, but I don't want to enter my food in WW and the body Bugg site- if I can reliably track in one place I'll be doing well.

Today I worked out with my trainer. It felt good, because it was like facing a fear- I felt so fat and uncoordinated I definitely stepped out of my comfort zone. I cant wait for the first 5 or 10 lbs to come off- I will feel much better then!

I hope everyone is having a great day and week and tracking and moving! I might be doing a half marathon on Saturday but not sure. The cut off time is 3:15. I *might* be able to do it. My husband says to just go for it, and I'd love to use it for my Half Fanatics qualification. Decisions, decisions.

Take care everyone!

Melinda

It actually went surprisingly well. The doctor was incredibly patient, communicative, and knowledgeable, and I didn't break out crying (which often happens). As both a positive and a negative, it seems extremely likely that I have IC. It's kind of a negative because it's chronic and the medical field knows very little about it, so there isn't a "cure". But the positive is that it probably isn't something very serious or life-threatening, and there are some steps I can take to try to ease the pain with diet and, if I choose it later, medication.

I've been dealing with this chronic pain in some form or another for over two years, and it's good to have talked to someone about it. It's a weight off my shoulders to some degree.

Anyway, I will catch up with the boards a bit tomorrow, but I wanted to check in, thank everyone for their patience, and cheer everyone on in their first week of the challenge!! :cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:
Hi kollerbear - thanks again for being our weightkeeper! I'm so glad to hear that your dr appointment went relatively well. Hopefully there are some treatments that can help you.

Sorry for your community's loss. I know what you mean being a New Yorker. My entire family lives in NJ or NY and I grew up there. I moved to the Midwest shortly after 9/11 and was offended at how little it affected people I met here. With some hindsight, that view probably wasn't fair, but my emotions were raw for a long time.

I've been doing okay. I've been super hungry the past few days. Making a good number of healthy food choices, but some not so great (2 servings of pita chips - I'm looking at you). I have been exercising and looked up some yoga poses for runners, will start mixing those in with my strength training that I am getting back to.

I loved the "full of awesome" quote yesterday (?) so much that I've started saying it to my DD. She has been impressing me so much with her awesomeness lately (when she's not being obnoxiously sassy, of course)!

Hey Jill ... he is now doing fine. He is taking too many credits his first semester (19) and had 3 honors classes. :crazy2: After a week of emotional therapy, we convinced him to drop his worst class calc 2 honors to calc 1 regular. We really wanted him to just drop it ... but he wouldn't budge. He now feels better about everything. We miss him and will be seeing him at the end of the month. :cool1: We really wanted to give him a month and a 1/2 to adjust.

Well I'm glad he's all settled. That's a tough load for a first semester! I'm sure he'll do fine! And so will you lol.

And my smilies change daily, too. So annoying!

Hey Jill, how did your nephew do?
DS16 ran his first meet of the season today. Coach had him seeded as 10th and he came in 8th on our team. One more spot and he gets varsity!

That's awesome! My nephew did great. He was 4th on his team which is his best. The meet was at home so they know the course well.

My woo hoo is that I am following my exercise plan (almost). Something came up & I couldn't make it to the gym so I walked instead when I had time. My eating? Not too good this week. I better get that in control right away!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm waiting while DS6 is at gymnastics. Tonight is our county's band night and it's at our school's stadium so we are going. All the county bands perform & it's tons of fun. Btw-we don't have county schools here. Each town is a separate school district so that's why they all come together this one night. It'll be a late night for my kids (7-9) but my nephew plays drum in one band so it's cool we'll see him.
My eating has been horrible this week. I ended up going out for lunch yesterday & today. I know I sound like a broken record, but I better get back on track with WW. I will start asap. I really don't have a choice!
Well, it took me longer to reply than I thought, but I figured out how to multi-quote on my iPhone, so I'm happy. I have to go pick DS up & run home to get DH & DS9. I will be back tomorrow. Have a great night!
Jill
Just popping into say that I know I'm behind with Pms and names on the front page. Its been a bear of a week and just 1 thing after another going wrong. I work tomorrow and then have a 3 day weekend!
If i don't go out for the Packer's game tomorrow night(no nfl network:sad1: ) I will start catching up getting everybody sorted into your mini-groups. Gotta head to a meeting now. Be back tomorrow. Thanks for being patient with me:thumbsup2
I made unsweetened iced tea and kept it fairly well stocked. I also cut up a bunch of fresh veggies on Saturday (for the waterpark trip Sunday, but I made too much) and had those as a ready, munchable snack all week. My favorites are grape tomatoes, cucumber sticks, carrot chips, and broccoli, so that's what I had. I was hungry this week. I did a lot of snacking, all on my plan though. I don't have anything else in the house.
Yesterday was ice skating and that kicked my butt. I am working on spirals (where you glide around on one foot with your free leg up in the air behind you) and lunges (where you lunge-- on ice! :scared1:). Today just getting up from the chair is a challenge. Running today, luckily that doesn't use very many of the muscles I seem to have taken out of commission on the ice yesterday.
My trip is coming up fast, I am excited but starting to get stressed by everything I still have to do. Not to mention taking care of all the normal stuff in the meantime, like foster dogs and work. I'm getting ready to make a plan and a packing list and I already feel like there just isn't enough time!
This week I have been drinking my water to try to counter act my horrible, but delicious, eating on vacation. I have been trying to drink at least 1 of the big 1.5 liter arrowhead bottles a day. It has been going well.
:offtopic: So I need to vent a little. I had a customer today that came in and was just angry at the world, and then told me how he could not believe how someone like me was in a management position. It made me so angry that all I wanted to do was eat ice cream for dinner and I was so embarassed cuz I burst into tears because of the anger. I have since calmed down and decided that when I get home from work I am going to eat something healty.
QOTDs: Yes, I am often shocked at calories. Which is why I am seriously avoiding those Costco double chocolate chip muffins in my freezer! My wahoo moment is that I have been getting up to meet people for a walk at 5:30 AM. Boy is that early!
The sub office finally called and offered me a position--but it was 6.25 hours and I had thought I was only working half days. Since I was expected at the school in 15 minutes for a training I took it. The teacher and I then talked to the principal to find out what was going on. He said he'd rather have me working that part time position as part of the full time position and just have a different sub in the building part time. So it was nice he wanted me around, but just a bit confusing for a while! Anyhooooo. Tuesday I started and it's going well. Kindergarteners are so stinking cute. The kiddo I specifically work with is an angel. And to think the parents thought he was going to be trouble; they should see the rest of the class! :rotfl2: I'm not sure where they are in the hiring process, but they booked me for the rest of the month. kaching :beach:
DS1 arrived safe and sound at my parents' place. He was supposed to let me know when he left for the 2 hour drive and of course he didn't! He's trying to squeeze visits in before he leaves for college next week. Saturday the family goes to DH's parents'. I'm trying to decide how I feel about a baby leaving the nest. He's a high maintenance child and pretty much I've been waiting for this day for 18 years :-)rotfl2:), but I'm surprised at how sad I feel. :sad: Boy those apron strings are strong.
I ran today. It has been a few days and I just HAD to exercise. I feel so much better since I ran today. It really helps me with weight loss ... but also with my mental outlook.
***********
I have a question .... I tend to crave something chocolatey in the evenings. Does anyone have a suggestion for something low-cal that could be filling? Thanks everyone in advance!
I don't know if I'd call it 'filling' but I keep Hershey Kisses on hand for when I need a little bit of chocolate. I usually have 3 and that's about 60 calories; just enough to satisfy my craving. ;)
Organic hot cocoa. The key is that you have to drink it from the spoon (no sipping from the cup). You will get your chocolate fix long before you finish the cup.
